Passengers booked on four Isle of Man–Liverpool return sailings in November 2026 will no longer have a 19:00 return crossing. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has moved those departures to 13:30 on 7, 14, 21 and 28 November, making the advertised sailings unsuitable for a conventional day trip to Liverpool. The operator says the change is required by tidal and operational constraints while the Manxman remains out of service for propulsion-system repairs. Affected customers are being contacted and can request a 01:45 Heysham alternative with a booked coach from Liverpool, or a full refund if no suitable option works.
Are Liverpool day trips from the Isle of Man cancelled?
The four affected Liverpool return sailings are not cancelled outright, but their earlier 13:30 departure removes the evening return that made a same-day Liverpool visit practical. The changed dates are Saturday 7 November, Saturday 14 November, Saturday 21 November and Saturday 28 November 2026.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company says the amended timetable reflects tidal and operational issues. It also allows the vessel Ben-my-Chree to preserve the core Heysham passenger and freight service while its flagship Manxman is being repaired.
| Date | Original Liverpool return | New return departure | Effect on a day trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 November 2026 | 19:00 | 13:30 | Evening return no longer available |
| 14 November 2026 | 19:00 | 13:30 | Evening return no longer available |
| 21 November 2026 | 19:00 | 13:30 | Evening return no longer available |
| 28 November 2026 | 19:00 | 13:30 | Evening return no longer available |
Why did the Liverpool ferry time change?
The immediate reason is a combination of tide constraints and operating requirements. The wider disruption is linked to Manxman, which has been unavailable since inspections during scheduled dry docking found wear on both propulsion-shaft liners and bearings.

The shafts were sent to Denmark for specialist work. They must then be refitted, inspected and subjected to sea trials before the vessel can return. The company’s September update targeted a return no later than the end of November 2026, but that is a target rather than a guarantee of a particular sailing.
Brian Thomson, managing director of the Steam Packet, said the company apologised for the disruption and that Manxman would return only after all work was complete and fully tested, describing safety as its highest priority.

Can I still travel if my booking is affected?
Yes, but the Steam Packet says the practical alternative for affected foot passengers is a different route and a much less convenient timetable. The reservations team is contacting customers whose bookings are affected.
The 01:45 Heysham option
Passengers may transfer to the 01:45 sailing from Heysham. Foot passengers travelling from Liverpool can use a coach supplied by the operator, but the coach must be booked at the same time as the sailing change. This is not an equivalent Liverpool sailing: it adds a coach transfer and requires an overnight departure, so check how you will reach Heysham and where you will arrive on the Isle of Man before accepting it.

When a refund applies
If the Heysham sailing and coach do not provide a suitable alternative, the company says passengers are entitled to a full refund. Ask the reservations team to record that no workable replacement exists rather than assuming a missed or unused ticket will be refunded automatically.
How does the original Liverpool sailing compare with Heysham?
| Consideration | Original Liverpool booking | 01:45 Heysham alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Departure affected by this notice | 19:00 from Liverpool | 01:45 from Heysham |
| Transfer complexity | Direct Liverpool ferry itinerary | Coach transfer from Liverpool for foot passengers, booked with the change |
| Same-day Liverpool suitability | Designed around an evening return | Generally unsuitable for a normal day trip because of the overnight departure and route change |
| Refund position | Booking is affected by the timetable amendment | Full refund if no suitable alternative can be found |
What should I do if I have one of these four bookings?
- Wait for or contact the Steam Packet reservations team. The operator says affected passengers will be contacted, but contacting reservations directly can clarify your options before travel.
- Confirm whether your ticket is for 7, 14, 21 or 28 November 2026. The 13:30 change described here applies to those four Liverpool returns.
- Ask for the complete Heysham arrangement. Confirm the 01:45 sailing, the Liverpool coach departure point and time, and whether the coach has been added to your booking.
- Check your onward plans. Recalculate hotel, rail, taxi and work arrangements around an overnight sailing and a different port.
- Request a full refund if the alternative is not viable. Keep the confirmation of the amended booking or refund request.

Is the Mersey ferry running when I get to Liverpool?
Mersey Ferries is a separate River Mersey service and is not the Isle of Man Steam Packet route. Its current timetable notice says commuter and sightseeing services are suspended, sightseeing tickets are unavailable, and services are expected to resume in early November. Do not assume that a Steam Packet crossing guarantees a River Explorer trip.
The Mersey Ferries sightseeing page lists a planned winter pattern of 10:00–16:00 from 5 October to 1 November 2026, then 10:00–15:00 from 7 November 2026 to 7 February 2027. The same page carries the suspension warning, so those are planned hours, not confirmation that boats are operating. Merseytravel directs passengers to the Mersey Ferries website for the latest timetable and service update.

What is the safest way to plan the Liverpool visit?
Verify both services separately shortly before departure: the Steam Packet sailing status and your booking, then the Mersey Ferries operating notice if a River Explorer trip is part of the itinerary. Build the day around confirmed transport rather than the planned winter hours, and keep a refund or alternative-travel decision open until the operator confirms what is running.
