Before replacing anything, record four details from the error:

  • Which executable or program displayed it? A Windows process, game launcher, or application?
  • Where does the error point? Usually %windir%System32logoncli.dll or %windir%SysWOW64logoncli.dll.
  • When does it happen? At sign-in, during startup or shutdown, or only when launching one program?
  • What wording appears? “Missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”?

logoncli.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL. It is commonly identified as the Net Logon Client DLL, associated with Windows authentication and networking rather than Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game redistributable.

If the message points to a Windows directory, repair Windows first. Do not download a replacement DLL from a search result.

Where logoncli.dll belongs

On 64-bit Windows, the normal 64-bit copy is generally located at:

%windir%System32logoncli.dll

A 32-bit Windows component used by 32-bit programs on 64-bit Windows is generally located at:

%windir%SysWOW64logoncli.dll

The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries. Windows WOW64 redirects compatible 32-bit applications to the appropriate system location. Microsoft documents this behavior in its WOW64 file-system redirection guidance.

Do not swap the files between these folders. A 32-bit process needs the x86-compatible copy, and a 64-bit process needs the x64 copy. A wrong-architecture replacement can produce “Bad Image” or “The application could not start” errors.

Historical file inventories show several Windows build variants, including versions beginning with 10.0.18362, 10.0.14393, 10.0.10586, and 6.3.9600. These are not a current universal version list. Windows servicing changes protected files, so the correct copy must match your installed Windows build and architecture.

Fix 1: Install updates and restart

A failed or incomplete Windows update is a common reason for a protected DLL to become inconsistent.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Test the program or repeat the action that produced the error.

If Windows Update reports an error, restart once more and check again. If updates repeatedly fail, continue with the repair commands below rather than copying `logoncli.dll manually.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest general repair when the file is missing, damaged, or located under %windir%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type Terminal.
  2. Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator. On some systems, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose the same option.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after both commands complete.
  2. Test the affected program again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies the source files that System File Checker may need. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system-file repair procedure.

A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC says it repaired files, restart before judging the result. If the error remains, run sfc /scannow once more and note whether the same message returns.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix when a third-party application is actually responsible.

If DISM cannot find repair files

When Windows Update cannot supply the required files, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:

C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example path. Use a repair source that matches your installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at an unrelated ISO or invent a source folder.

If you do not have suitable installation media, use Windows recovery options instead of downloading an isolated DLL.

Fix 3: Check the digital signature and file path

A legitimate Windows copy should be in a Windows system directory and carry a valid Microsoft signature.

To inspect it:

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Locate logoncli.dll.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the signature and click Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

Repeat the check in %windir%SysWOW64 if the affected program is 32-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A copy in a game folder, Downloads, Temp, or an unfamiliar directory is not automatically legitimate merely because it has the right filename. Do not overwrite a Windows copy with it. If the file is unsigned, has an unexpected publisher, or appears outside the expected system path, run a full security scan and treat the copy as suspicious.

The path alone does not prove which file a program attempted to load. Use the exact path and executable named in the dialog, Event Viewer, or the application’s own log.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove a legitimate Windows file after a detection, but malware can also tamper with or impersonate a DLL. Do not restore the file blindly.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Protection history.
  4. Review entries matching logoncli.dll.
  5. Check the detection name, original path, and action taken.
  6. If the file is unsigned, outside the normal Windows directory, or identified as malware, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
  7. If a Microsoft-signed file from the expected Windows path was quarantined, verify it independently before using the controlled Restore or Allow action.
  8. Afterward, run DISM and SFC again.

Microsoft explains the behavior of quarantined items in its Protection History documentation. Restoring a detected threat can cause it to be detected again unless it is explicitly allowed, so an allow action should never be used as a shortcut around verification.

Fix 5: Repair the program that reports the error

A missing-file dialog does not always mean the named DLL is the root cause. The calling executable may be damaged, using a bad private copy, or loading an incompatible dependency.

If the error appears only when launching one game or application:

  1. Close the program and its launcher.
  2. Open the program’s official launcher.
  3. Look for Repair, Scan and repair, or Verify files.
  4. Run that operation and allow it to replace damaged application files.
  5. Restart the launcher and test again.
  6. If repair fails, uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Download and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.

For a game, use the launcher’s own verification feature rather than placing logoncli.dll into the game directory. There is no reliable evidence that particular games universally ship a legitimate private copy of this Windows component.

Do not start by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Those packages do not normally repair a Windows-protected logoncli.dll. Reinstall a runtime only when the application’s documentation or its own installer specifically identifies that runtime as missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Test Safe Mode when the error occurs at login

If the message appears during sign-in or startup, Safe Mode can separate Windows component damage from third-party startup software.

  1. Open Settings → System → Recovery.
  2. Beside Advanced startup, click Restart now.
  3. Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings.
  4. Click Restart.
  5. Press 4 for Safe Mode, or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
  6. Check whether the error appears there.

If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, investigate recently installed startup programs, endpoint-security software, profile-management agents, and malware. Open Task Manager → Startup apps and disable only recently added or clearly identified items, then restart normally and test.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A driver update is not a normal direct fix for logoncli.dll. Consider it only when the failure began with a graphics, storage, chipset, network, or security-device change and Device Manager reports a related problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the device category related to the failure.
  3. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  4. Check the General tab for an error code.
  5. Open Driver → Update Driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart and test.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not replace logoncli.dll as a substitute for a broken driver.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you inspect dozens of Device Manager entries manually. Its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version, and it is not a replacement for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows recovery

Use System Restore when the failure clearly began after a recent update, driver, cleanup utility, or software installation and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  4. Click Scan for affected programs.
  5. Confirm the restore and let Windows restart.

System Restore does not guarantee that every protected file or application issue will be corrected. Back up important data first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, several Windows features fail, or the drive shows repeated corruption and I/O errors, back up your files and use Windows recovery or matching installation media. Reinstallation may be necessary when system repair cannot complete. Repeated corruption also warrants checking drive health rather than repeatedly replacing files.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

There is no verified official Microsoft standalone logoncli.dll download page. Generic DLL repositories can provide:

  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
  • A tampered file
  • A copy that does not match dependent system components

Even a file that removes the first popup may leave the component store damaged or introduce a new loader error. The supported sources are Windows Update, DISM using a matching repair source, Windows installation or recovery media, and the official installer for an application that owns the calling executable.

FAQ

Is logoncli.dll malware?

The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with the same name is suspicious when it is unsigned, has an unexpected publisher, or is outside the normal Windows system directories. Check the signature and quarantine history before taking action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 logoncli.dll fix it?

No. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no established reason to manually register logoncli.dll, and the command may return an entry-point error without repairing anything. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Should I copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64?

No. Those directories serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Let Windows servicing restore the correct copy.

What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?

It usually indicates an invalid image format or compatibility problem, including status 0xC000007B, rather than proof that a runtime package is missing. A wrong architecture, damaged file, wrong Windows build, invalid signature, or incompatible dependency can all cause it. Microsoft describes this status as STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT.

What if SFC says it repaired files but the error remains?

Restart, run SFC again, and identify the executable that still reports the error. If the message appears only in one application, repair that application. If several Windows components fail, continue with DISM, Safe Mode, System Restore, or Windows recovery.
