If Windows says “The program can’t start because lprhelp.dll is missing from your computer,” the missing file is usually part of Windows’ LPR printing support. lprhelp.dll is the LPR Print Monitor component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary application DLL.
The safest repair is to restore LPR Port Monitor through Windows Features, then repair Windows protected files if the feature is already enabled or will not install.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose where to start:
- You use an LPR or LPD network printer: Enable or reinstall LPR Port Monitor first. Enable LPD Print Service as well if your printing workflow requires it.
- The error appeared after Windows Update, an upgrade, cleanup software, or a failed feature installation: Repair the Windows image with DISM, then run SFC.
- Your antivirus recently detected or quarantined a Windows print file: Check quarantine before replacing anything manually.
- The error appears only when one printer-management application opens: Repair Windows first, then update or reinstall that application from its official publisher.
- The printer itself stopped working: Check the printer driver and Print Spooler after restoring the Windows feature.
- You do not use LPR printing: You may not need the feature, but another installed program is still trying to call it. Identify that program instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What lprhelp.dll does
LPR means Line Printer Remote, and LPD means Line Printer Daemon. They are older network-printing protocols commonly used to send print jobs to a printer or print server over a network.
Windows provides LPR support through a print monitor that works with the Print Spooler. The spooler manages queued jobs and communicates with the selected port monitor. Files associated with this feature include lpr.exe, lprmon.dll, lprmonui.dll, and lprhelp.dll. Microsoft describes the related standard port-monitor and LPR architecture in its LPR and standard port-monitor documentation.

- MANUAL NETWORK SETUP REQUIRED: Configuration via web interface (static IP or DHCP) using LPR queue “LP1"; Not plug-and-play, requires intermediate network knowledge for installation; Access our online FAQs for additional helpful tips and instructions
- USB PRINTER COMPATIBILITY: Works with most USB 2.0 printers using standard drivers; Not compatible with USB hubs, multi-function printers with proprietary drivers, or printers requiring full bi-directional communication
- COMPATIBILITY: The USB to Ethernet print server is USB 2.0 compliant and works with macOS and Windows; It also supports LPR network printing and Bonjour Print Services for broad compatibility; Included software is compatible with Windows only
- PRINT FROM ANYWHERE: Print from any computer connected to the Ethernet; This print server doesn’t require a wired connection to a computer, however it must be connected to your networking device (eg. router or switch) with the included RJ45 network cable
The file is legitimate when it comes from the Windows component store or the correct Windows system location. It is not necessarily present on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation because LPR Port Monitor is an optional Windows feature.
Is lprhelp.dll malware
The filename itself is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. That does not make every file with that name safe.
If you find a copy in an unexpected application folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or another location unrelated to Windows components, check it before allowing it to run:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
- Right-click the file, choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, and allow the scan to finish.
A missing Digital Signatures tab, an invalid signature, a mismatched file architecture, or a detection in antivirus history requires further investigation. Do not copy that file into System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 1: Restore LPR Port Monitor through Windows Features
This is the most likely fix when lprhelp.dll is absent because LPR printing was disabled or removed.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - In Windows Features, expand Print and Document Services.
- Select LPR Port Monitor.
- Select LPD Print Service too if your printer or print server specifically uses LPD.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or configure the component.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft documents this feature path in its Windows LPR Port Monitor guidance.
On some Windows builds, use the newer Settings path:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features or Add an optional feature.
- Search for LPR Port Monitor.
- Select it, choose Next, and then select Install.
- Restart Windows.
The wording and availability can vary by Windows edition and build. If you cannot find the feature, your edition may not expose it in the same location, or the Windows component store may be damaged.

Check whether it worked
After restarting:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Print a test page.
- Open the program that previously produced the error.
If the error disappears but the printer still does not print, the missing DLL was only one part of the problem. Continue with the driver and spooler checks below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when LPR Port Monitor is already selected, the installation fails, or Windows reports that it cannot find the component files.
DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. Run DISM first, then SFC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- When it reports completion, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try installing LPR Port Monitor again through Windows Features.
Microsoft explains the image-repair process in its DISM repair documentation, and documents SFC in the System File Checker command reference.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files or found no integrity violations. If DISM fails, note its exact error rather than repeatedly running SFC. A damaged component store, pending servicing operation, insufficient disk space, or a broken Windows installation may require pending updates, a restart, or an in-place repair installation.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed: its free scan identifies reported problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and restoring the Windows feature or using Microsoft’s built-in repair commands remains the direct fix for lprhelp.dll.
Fix 3: Check Windows servicing and pending updates
An interrupted update or optional-feature installation can leave Windows with an incomplete print component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Try enabling LPR Port Monitor once more.
If Windows repeatedly starts and fails an update, or Optional Features cannot install any component, stop manually copying files. Back up important data and use a Windows in-place repair installation from official Microsoft installation media. This refreshes Windows system components while normally preserving installed applications and personal files, but review Microsoft’s current instructions for your edition before proceeding.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows component after a false positive or during a damaged-file incident.

- Verify the file’s Microsoft digital signature and scan the system first.
- If the item is confirmed as a Microsoft-signed Windows component, follow your security product’s restore process.
- Run a Full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Restart and reinstall LPR Port Monitor.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear. If quarantine keeps recurring, treat the detection as a security problem and investigate the triggering executable.
Fix 5: Repair the printer and its driver
lprhelp.dll belongs to Windows LPR support. It is separate from the printer manufacturer’s driver. A damaged or incompatible driver can therefore produce a related printing failure even after the DLL is restored.
First restart the Print Spooler:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try printing again.
If that does not help, reinstall the affected printer:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current driver only from the printer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install the driver.
- Re-add the printer and select the correct LPR port or print-server address.
If the failure is limited to one print-management program, update or reinstall that program after repairing Windows. The application may be calling the print subsystem incorrectly, or it may have its own damaged files.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which printer and chipset drivers are stale instead of making you hunt through multiple manufacturer pages; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the printer manufacturer’s official driver remains the preferred source.

Do not replace lprhelp.dll by copying a file from another computer. Windows maintains separate 64-bit and 32-bit system components on 64-bit installations. Conventionally, 64-bit files are associated with System32, while 32-bit files are associated with SysWOW64, but the correct component location depends on Windows servicing and the installed feature.
Recommended Free Tools
To check your architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Look at System type.
- Record whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Historical Microsoft records show that lprhelp.dll versions differed between Windows releases and between x86 and x64 systems. Those old version and size values should not be used as a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 replacement guide.
A file can also exist and still fail because it is corrupted, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the installed Windows build. Restore it through Windows Features, DISM, and SFC rather than manually replacing it.
Do not use regsvr32 or download the DLL
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Windows print-monitor components are loaded by the print subsystem and are not normally repaired by registering them. Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation.

Do not download lprhelp.dll from a random DLL site and copy it into a system folder. A downloaded copy may contain malware, target a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the damaged optional feature untouched. The safe sources are Windows Features, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, and the printer or application vendor’s official installer when that vendor’s software is involved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When to use System Restore or repair installation
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup operation, or system change and normal component repair did not help:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review affected programs and complete the restore.
- Restart and test printing.
If System Restore is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, use an in-place Windows repair installation. Consider it after DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and Optional Features have all failed, or when multiple Windows components are damaged.
