It is not normally present on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. The program that installed it is the component that needs repair.

Some indexed copies are described as 32-bit, but that does not prove every Sharp package uses only a 32-bit version. A 32-bit printer utility can legitimately run on 64-bit Windows.

A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by sh_1_res.dll.
Fix 1: Identify the Sharp software that is requesting the DLL
Before reinstalling anything, find out when the error appears. This determines whether you need a printer driver, scanner utility, PC-Fax component, or an obsolete startup entry.
Write down the complete message, including the name of any executable shown in the title bar or error details. Common forms include:

- Note the executable name and its folder. Do not delete the file yet.
Also check installed applications:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Sharp, the printer model, scanner software, or PC-Fax.
- Record the exact product name.
Finally, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10. Record the Sharp model if it is still listed.
If the error appears only when printing or scanning, the device software is the likely parent. If it appears during startup after the printer was removed, an orphaned Sharp utility may be trying to load the DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Sharp package
This is the most likely permanent fix.
- Find the model number on the Sharp printer or multifunction device.
- Open Sharp’s official support or driver-download portal in your browser.
- Select the exact model.
- Select your Windows version and the correct architecture.
- Download the relevant official package. Depending on the model, this may be a PCL, PS, PPD, universal printer, PC-Fax, scanner, or combined software package.
- If the download is compressed, right-click it, select Extract All, and extract it to a temporary folder.
- Open the extracted printer folder.
- Run Setup. If Windows asks for permission, select Yes.
- Choose Add a new Sharp printer or Select Sharp Printer to Update, depending on what the installer displays.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows.
Use the model-specific package rather than a generic Sharp driver. Similar Sharp product names can use different packages, and installing a package for another model may leave the original utility broken.

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Sharp printer utilities, scanner software, PC-Fax software, and the old model-specific package.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Sharp printer and choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the newly downloaded package from Sharp.
On Windows 10, the equivalent printer path is Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.

Check the result
The repair worked if:
- The original program opens without the DLL message.
- The Sharp printer appears in Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- The scanner or PC-Fax utility opens, if those components were installed.
- The startup warning no longer appears after restarting Windows.
If the installer completes but the same error returns, note which executable triggers it. The installer may have restored the printer driver while leaving a separate Sharp utility or missing dependency unresolved.

Antivirus software may have removed the DLL after it was installed, particularly if the file was old or the driver package was updated.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a quarantined item referring to
sh_1_res.dll, Sharp software, or the executable that produces the error. - Open the entry and review its path and details.
Restore the file only when all of these are credible:
- The path belongs to a known Sharp installation.
- The file was installed by a legitimate Sharp package.
- The Sharp installer or package has a trustworthy origin.
- A current security scan does not identify the package as malicious.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. If Defender continues to remove it, obtain a fresh package from Sharp’s official support portal and scan that installer instead of creating an unrestricted antivirus exclusion.
After restoring a verified file, reinstall or repair the complete Sharp package. A quarantine event can indicate that other files from the same installation are also missing.

Fix 4: Check the driver in Device Manager
Device Manager may reveal that Windows retained a damaged or generic printer driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if relevant, Imaging devices or Cameras.
- Find the Sharp device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error message.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Select Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the Sharp utility is incomplete. In that case, use Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the model-specific Sharp package manually.

If the device is not listed, select View → Show hidden devices. Remove only an obsolete Sharp device that you have already disconnected or replaced. Do not remove unrelated printers or imaging devices.
Device Manager handles the device driver, but it may not restore optional scanner, monitoring, or PC-Fax software. Those components must come from the full Sharp package.

A commonly indexed copy of sh_1_res.dll is 32-bit. That is compatible with a 32-bit Sharp application running on 64-bit Windows, but it does not mean you should copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit program folder or replace it with a similarly named file.
Check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
Then download the package intended for the exact printer model and the supported Windows version. Choose a 32-bit package when the Sharp application requires it, even if Windows itself is 64-bit.
If the error says that the file is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error, suspect an incompatible or incomplete package rather than assuming the DLL needs registration.
Fix 6: Remove an obsolete Sharp startup component
If no Sharp printer remains installed, the error may come from a leftover status monitor, scanner program, or PC-Fax utility.
First disable the startup entry:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Select the Sharp-related entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the warning disappears, uninstall the associated Sharp application:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Sharp and the old printer model.
- Uninstall the obsolete utility.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random startup files based only on a filename. If the entry has no clear publisher or points to an unexpected folder, run a Windows Security scan before removing it.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Use Windows repair commands only when other Windows features are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system-file corruption is suspected. These commands repair protected Windows components; they generally do not recreate a missing third-party Sharp DLL.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the Sharp application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the Sharp installation is intact. Reinstall the Sharp package if the DLL error remains.

What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the parent Sharp application. Even an apparently valid copy may fail because a dependent DLL, registry entry, service, or printer utility is also missing.
Use the official Sharp support portal and select the exact model instead.
Do not copy it into System32
There is no universal correct path for sh_1_res.dll. It may belong inside a Sharp driver directory, a printer software folder, or a Windows driver-store package. Copying it into System32 can cause version conflicts and does not repair the application that requested it.

Do not routinely run regsvr32
Microsoft’s regsvr32 command is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that sh_1_res.dll is a COM or ActiveX component.
Do not use:
regsvr32 sh_1_res.dll
as a routine fix. It may return an error saying that the entry point was not found, and it will not restore missing dependencies.
Do not assume SFC fixes every DLL error
SFC and DISM are not general-purpose replacements for third-party application installers. Use them for broader Windows corruption, not as the first repair for an absent Sharp file.
