Microsoft’s explanation of missing-DLL failures covers several possibilities: a dependent file may have been removed, overwritten, upgraded incompatibly, or left in a broken dependency relationship. In practice, an incomplete uninstall, a damaged or partial reinstall, a cleanup operation that removed a shared file, or moving an old program to another folder can produce the same symptom.
How do I identify the program that needs ltlst12n.dll?
Do this before copying, deleting, or downloading anything. The goal is to connect the error to one installed application and determine whether the requested location makes sense for that application.

Disable only an entry you recognize; removing an unknown startup item is not a substitute for identifying it.
What should I try first when the owning application is known?

Repair the program from Windows 11 Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application named by the error, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when that option is available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish without deleting the application’s data.
- Restart the application and reproduce the action that caused the popup.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only when you accept that the app’s stored settings or local data may be cleared.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes Repair or Reset. If those controls are absent, use the application’s own maintenance option if it has one, or proceed to a clean reinstall from the original source.

Repair or reinstall on Windows 10
For a Microsoft Store application, open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, choose Advanced options, and use Repair before Reset. For a traditional desktop installer, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, and choose Repair or Change if the installer provides that command.
Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. These repair steps can still help an existing installation, but an old scanner package running on an unsupported operating system has a wider maintenance and security risk than the same package on a supported Windows release.
How do I reinstall the scanner or imaging software safely?
Use the original publisher’s installer or the installation media supplied with the device. For a scanner, identify the exact model first and select the package intended for that model and your Windows edition. A DLL from another product can have the same filename but a different architecture, dependencies, or expected version.
- Back up application data. Export profiles, scan presets, or project files if the program supports it. Do not delete the program folder until you know where those files are stored.
- Uninstall the damaged package. Use Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. If the package includes a separate scanner driver and imaging application, note both names before removing either one.
- Restart Windows. This releases files that may still be in use and clears a pending uninstall state.
- Install the matching package. Use the manufacturer’s installer or the original device media for the exact model and operating system. Avoid mixing a 32-bit legacy application with a DLL taken from a 64-bit package, or the reverse.
- Test the original workflow. Launch the same executable that produced the error and perform a small scan or open a test image. If the program now starts, keep the repaired installation rather than adding a second copy of the DLL elsewhere.
If the manufacturer no longer supplies a compatible installer, preserve the original media and document the Windows version on which the software worked. Running an unsupported legacy package may require keeping it on an older, isolated system rather than forcing an unverified library into Windows 11.

When should I run DISM and SFC?
Use Microsoft’s component-repair sequence when more than one application is failing, Windows itself reports damaged components, or reinstalling the owning program does not restore its files. These commands address Windows component corruption; they are not a way to obtain a vendor-specific legacy DLL.
- Save your work and open Command Prompt with administrator rights. Search for
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - Run this command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent. It checks protected Windows files and can replace a corrupted copy with a cached copy.
- Restart Windows and test the original application again.
Run DISM before SFC, not the other way around. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the legacy application’s DLL is present; it only means protected Windows files passed that check. If the commands report that repairs could not be completed, record the exact message and return to application-specific repair rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Could ltlst12n.dll be malware?
A missing-DLL popup alone is not evidence of malware. Treat the situation as a security issue when the file is located in an unexpected user-writable folder, appeared immediately after a suspicious download, returns after every reboot, or is accompanied by Microsoft Defender detections or unknown startup entries.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Install the latest protection updates if Windows offers them.
- Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan.
Do not whitelist the DLL merely because an old application expects it. If Defender identifies a threat, follow its quarantine or removal instructions and investigate the download or startup item that introduced it.

What are Safety Scanner and MSRT for?
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a manually started secondary scan for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its download expires 10 days after release, so download a fresh copy before a later scan rather than reusing an old executable.
The Malicious Software Removal Tool is a post-infection removal utility that Microsoft generally releases monthly. Microsoft states that MSRT does not replace an antivirus product, so it should be considered an additional check, not ongoing protection.
Why should I avoid a standalone DLL download?
Third-party DLL pages commonly recommend downloading a binary, copying it into System32 or SysWOW64, and registering it with regsvr32. That procedure does not establish that the file came from the application vendor, matches the requesting program’s architecture, contains the expected dependencies, or has a trustworthy signature. It can also turn an application-specific problem into a Windows-wide one.

Where should ltlst12n.dll go on Windows 11?
There is no universal safe destination.
