If Windows says lucene++.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the program that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The most documented Windows context is Foxit Reader, which has shipped lucene++.dll and lucene++-contrib.dll beside its program files. The file can also belong to a developer-built application using Lucene++, an open-source C++ port of Apache Lucene. The correct fix depends on which program displays the error.

1. Identify the application that owns lucene++.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Read the complete error window before closing it. Note whether it names:
- Foxit Reader or
FoxitReader.exe - Another installed application
- A program built internally with Lucene++
- A different file, such as
msvcp140.dll,vcruntime140.dll, or a Boost library
A message that says “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean lucene++.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Check the program’s installation directory:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
lucene++.dllbeside the application executable.
For Foxit, the relevant file is normally beside FoxitReader.exe, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Also check when the failure started. A recent update, uninstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, or move of the application folder points strongly to a damaged or incomplete application installation.
If the problem affects only one Windows account, sign in with another account or create a temporary test profile. If the application works there, the installation may be intact and the original profile may be damaged.

Time needed: 10–25 minutes
This is the most likely fix for a missing lucene++.dll.
First look for an application repair option:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Some launchers use different labels, including Verify files, Repair installation, or Check for updates. Use that function before removing the program.
If the error concerns Foxit Reader, open Foxit if it still starts, then select:
Help → About Foxit PDF Reader → Check for Update

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select Foxit Reader.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Foxit again from its official installer.
Do not copy lucene++.dll from another Foxit installation or from a different release. A replacement may have different exports, dependencies, or architecture. Foxit file inventories have recorded both lucene++.dll and lucene++-contrib.dll, so reinstalling should restore the matching companion files when that version requires them.
If the application is a developer-built Lucene++ program, obtain the build package from its developer. The upstream Lucene++ project documents CMake and Windows builds, but its releases page does not provide an official packaged Windows DLL. A developer should rebuild the application and its required contrib library with the same compiler, architecture, Boost libraries, and zlib configuration.
Confirm that the repair worked
Launch the original application from its normal shortcut. Then check that:

lucene++.dllis in the application directory.lucene++-contrib.dllis present when the application installs it.- The file’s Properties dialog shows metadata consistent with the parent application.
- Windows Security or your endpoint protection no longer reports the file as removed.
If the file disappears again after reinstalling, inspect antivirus quarantine before repeating the installation.
3. Check antivirus quarantine and file protection
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have quarantined a damaged, modified, or incorrectly detected application file.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
lucene++.dll, the parent application, or its installation folder. - Read the detection details and file path.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when the path belongs to the application you intentionally installed, the application came from its official installer, and the file passes the available reputation or signature checks.
After a confirmed false positive, reinstall the parent application rather than downloading an isolated DLL. If security software removes the restored file again, leave it quarantined and submit the detection to that security vendor for review.

4. Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A present DLL can still fail to load because another module is missing. This is especially likely when the message says “The specified module could not be found” even though you can see lucene++.dll in the application directory.
Look carefully at the exact filename in the error. If it names a Microsoft runtime such as msvcp140.dll or vcruntime140.dll, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable that matches the application:
- Use the x86 package for a 32-bit application.
- Use the x64 package for a 64-bit application.
- Use ARM64 only for an ARM64 application.
The x86 and x64 packages can coexist. Installing only x64 does not repair a 32-bit application.
Download the packages from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. The official direct installers are also available for x86, x64, and ARM64.
Restart Windows after installation and launch the affected program again. If the error still names lucene++.dll, reinstall the parent application; the runtime package does not replace that file.
For a developer-built program, install the exact Boost and zlib dependencies specified by its build configuration. Do not substitute unrelated Lucene.Net assemblies. Lucene++ is a C++ project, while Lucene.Net is a separate .NET implementation.
5. Verify 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A 32-bit application needs a 32-bit build of lucene++.dll. A 64-bit application needs a 64-bit build. Windows being 64-bit does not tell you which architecture the application uses.
Check the application’s vendor documentation or installer. For a developer-owned program, inspect the executable with the development team’s preferred PE inspection tool. Do not guess based on the folder name alone.

Architecture problems often produce messages such as:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “lucene++.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
The fix is to install a matching application build and its matching library set. Do not place a 32-bit file in System32, or a 64-bit file in SysWOW64. Those directories are for Windows components, and their names are counterintuitive on 64-bit Windows.
6. Repair Windows components only if other programs are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Windows repair tools are secondary here. They do not recreate a third-party lucene++.dll, but they can help if several applications, Windows Update, or protected system files are also malfunctioning.

Install pending Windows updates first. Then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft provides the supported DISM and System File Checker instructions. If these commands report repairs but lucene++.dll is still missing, return to the parent application’s installer.

7. Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing application DLL. Consider it only if the application error appeared alongside graphics, printing, scanning, storage, or device failures.
To check a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
Do not use a driver update to replace lucene++.dll, and do not remove a working device driver merely because an application has a DLL error.

Do not copy lucene++.dll to System32 or register it
lucene++.dll is not a Windows system DLL. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can hide the real problem, create version conflicts, and make future repairs harder.
Do not run:
regsvr32 lucene++.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal C++ application library is loaded by its parent program and is not repaired by registration. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Why the error happens
The usual causes are:

| Only one user profile is affected | Test a new profile and inspect per-user application data |
Do not rely on version numbers or file sizes shown by DLL-index pages. They are not authoritative release records for Foxit or Lucene++.
Frequently asked questions
Is lucene++.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application library. It should normally remain in the directory installed by the program that uses it.
Is Foxit Reader the only program that uses it?
No. Foxit Reader is a documented real-world source in file inventories, but a developer-built Lucene++ application can also use a file with this name.
Can I download lucene++.dll separately?
Avoid random DLL download sites. The file may contain malware, belong to another application release, use the wrong architecture, or require companion files and dependencies. Use the parent application’s official installer instead.
Why does reinstalling a runtime not fix the error?
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables can repair a missing dependency, but they do not supply lucene++.dll itself. Reinstall the application that owns the file.
