xactengine2_2.dll is a legacy Microsoft DirectX XACT audio runtime file. If xactengine2_2.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, restore the legacy DirectX components rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The safest first fix is to install Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package and run DXSETUP.exe from the extracted folder. This adds older side-by-side components used by legacy games and applications without replacing the modern DirectX version built into Windows.

The version and size above are file metadata, not a current Microsoft package specification. Microsoft does not publish a definitive list of every game or program that requires this exact DLL.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because xactengine2_2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because xactengine2_2.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading xactengine2_2.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting xactengine2_2.dll.”
- “xactengine2_2.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The error can mean the file is absent, but “specified module could not be found” can also indicate that another dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Fix 1: Install the official legacy DirectX runtime
This is the most likely fix when an older game or application fails immediately after installation, Windows setup, or a clean PC rebuild.
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) page.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. - Open your Downloads folder and double-click the file.
- Accept the license terms.
- When asked for an extraction location, create a temporary folder such as
C:DirectX-Jun2010. - Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Follow the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected game or application again.
The downloaded file is an extractor. Running only directx_Jun2010_redist.exe does not always complete the component installation, so explicitly opening the extracted folder and running DXSETUP.exe matters.
Microsoft’s smaller DirectX web installer is another official route. It requires an internet connection while it installs and includes legacy D3DX, XAudio, XInput, XACT, and Managed DirectX components.

How to confirm the fix
The repair worked if the original missing-DLL message disappears and the program reaches its normal startup screen. You may not see a new shortcut or a separate XACT application because this is a runtime component loaded by the game or program.
If setup reports that a newer version is already installed but the error remains, extract the June 2010 package again and run DXSETUP.exe directly as administrator. Then check the game installation in the next step.
Fix 2: Run the installer bundled with the game
Many older games include their required DirectX files in a prerequisite folder. This is often the best choice because it matches the release the game was packaged with.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Look for a folder named
Redist,DirectX,Prerequisites, or_CommonRedist. - Open any DirectX subfolder.
- Right-click its setup program, usually
DXSETUP.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
- Start the game again.
If the game came from a launcher, use the launcher’s file-repair function before reinstalling the entire game. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
Verification replaces missing or damaged files belonging to the game. It does not necessarily install every Windows runtime, so run the bundled DirectX setup as well when it is present.
If verification reports damaged files repeatedly, uninstall the game, restart Windows, install it again from the official launcher or vendor installer, and run its prerequisite setup before launching it.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a runtime file after an installation, update, or false detection. Do not assume every detection is harmless.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected game, application, or
xactengine2_2.dll. - Expand the event and review its path and detection details.
- If the file came from Microsoft’s DirectX installer or the legitimate application installation, restore it only after confirming the source.
- Run a fresh scan.
- Re-run the official DirectX setup or verify the game files.
Do not restore a DLL that came from a random download site. If the file was quarantined from an unknown source, remove that copy and reinstall the runtime from Microsoft instead.
If the file keeps disappearing after a legitimate installation, inspect the security product’s exclusions and event history, update its definitions, and scan the full system for malware. Do not permanently whitelist an arbitrary DLL merely to suppress the error.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Both x86 and x64 versions of the legacy DirectX components exist. A 32-bit game needs the x86 runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
On 64-bit Windows, the usual locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32for 64-bit system componentsC:WindowsSysWOW64for 32-bit system components
These names are historical and counterintuitive. Do not copy files between them manually. Do not place an x86 DLL in System32, or an x64 DLL in SysWOW64.
The June 2010 DirectX installer is the correct way to install the required architecture. If only one older game fails, the game may also contain a damaged private copy or another missing dependency. Verify or reinstall that game instead of manually moving DLLs.

Because this file is needed by the program that calls it, the application’s own installation may be incomplete.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall if no repair option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the latest supported installer from the software vendor or reinstall through the official game launcher.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Run the program once after installation.
If the program offers Repair or Modify in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, use that option first. Then run the bundled DirectX installer if the program provides one.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages or .NET can help with other application dependencies, but xactengine2_2.dll is an XACT DirectX component, not a Visual C++ file. Reinstalling Visual C++ alone usually does not restore it.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component damage
Use this step when several unrelated older programs fail, Windows has recently suffered an interrupted update, or system files are reporting errors. These commands are not substitutes for installing the optional legacy DirectX runtime.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official DirectX setup again.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is guaranteed to restore an optional legacy XACT file that was never installed.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms point there
Graphics and audio driver problems can cause a game to crash, but updating a driver will not normally replace xactengine2_2.dll. Use this step when the program launches but crashes during sound, video, or device initialization.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat the process under Display adapters for the graphics device.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
For a clean vendor update, identify the exact device in Device Manager, visit the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page, download the matching Windows driver, and run its installer. Avoid driver packages that do not identify the hardware correctly.

If the installer itself fails
If DXSETUP.exe closes, reports an error, or appears to do nothing:
- Extract
directx_Jun2010_redist.exeto a new local folder such asC:DirectX-Jun2010. - Avoid running it from a network drive, compressed archive, or removable drive.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Temporarily remove conflicting overlays or security interference only in a controlled troubleshooting session.
- Retry after a clean restart.
- Review
DirectX.logandDXError.login the Windows directory for the failing component. - Run DISM and SFC, restart, and run
DXSETUP.exeagain.
If the failure began after a disk error, cleanup operation, malware incident, or major update, check Windows Security, inspect available disk space and health, and review recent system changes. System Restore is a last resort when the timing clearly matches a known system change.

Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a damaged file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the application. A private copy in the application folder can also change DLL search behavior and hide the real missing dependency.
Use Microsoft’s DirectX installer or the game’s official prerequisite installer instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 xactengine2_2.dll is generally irrelevant. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. XACT is normally loaded by the application and installed by DirectX setup; it is not normally repaired by COM registration.

Do not install DirectX 12 expecting legacy XACT files
Modern Windows includes its core DirectX runtime, but older side-by-side components remain separately deployable. Updating the main DirectX version does not necessarily install the legacy XACT files required by an older program.
Do not move every DLL into System32
System32 and SysWOW64 serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Copying files into either directory can create a worse mismatch and makes later diagnosis harder.
Frequently asked questions
Is xactengine2_2.dll a Windows system file?
It may be installed under Windows system directories by the DirectX redistributable, but it is not a core modern DirectX component guaranteed to exist on every Windows installation.
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include it?
Do not assume it is present. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can run legacy applications, but older DirectX side-by-side components such as XACT may need to be installed separately.
Is this a Visual C++ Redistributable file?
No. It belongs to the legacy DirectX XACT audio runtime. Visual C++ repair is not the normal fix for this particular dependency.
Should I use the x86 or x64 version?
Install the official runtime rather than choosing a loose DLL. A 32-bit game requires the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows, and the DirectX installer handles the supported components.

A dependency of xactengine2_2.dll may be missing, or the visible file may be corrupt or incompatible. Reinstall the official runtime and verify the application files before copying anything manually.
What if only one game has the problem?
Verify that game’s files, run its bundled DirectX setup, and reinstall the game if verification does not resolve the error. A single failing title usually points to its installation or prerequisite files.
What if many older games fail?
Install the June 2010 DirectX runtime, check antivirus quarantine, run DISM followed by SFC, inspect storage health, and investigate recent updates or cleanup activity. Restart and test again after each major repair step.
