If your Mac appears to be running while the screen stays black, the computer may have power but no usable display signal. The cause could be the built-in panel, an external monitor, a cable or adapter, startup software, or macOS itself. Start by deciding whether the failure affects only an external display or also the Mac’s own screen. Then force a clean shutdown, remove accessories, check brightness and connections, test the monitor directly, and use Safe Mode or macOS Recovery if the blank screen continues. If no picture appears even in Recovery, Apple’s guidance points to hardware service rather than repeated restarts.

What does a black Mac screen while the computer is running mean?

A black screen is a display-path symptom, not a diagnosis. A Mac can respond to the power button, play sounds, illuminate the keyboard, or keep an external device active while the panel receives no image. Those signs show that some power or startup activity exists; they do not prove that macOS, the graphics system, or the display hardware is healthy.

First separate the two situations below. This prevents you from reinstalling macOS when the real fault is a monitor cable, and it prevents you from blaming an external display when the built-in panel is the problem.

Situation Most useful first checks What the result tells you
Built-in MacBook display is black Brightness, clean power cycle, Safe Mode, macOS Recovery Whether the blank image follows the Mac through startup and recovery
External monitor is black while the Mac works Monitor power, video cable, adapter, dock, direct connection, display detection Whether the video path supports the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate
Both built-in and external screens are blank Clean power cycle, startup options or Recovery Whether the problem is likely software, startup, or hardware rather than one monitor

Exact behavior depends on the Mac model, Apple silicon or Intel processor, macOS version, monitor, cable, and adapter. Apple’s procedures are the authority for the specific model.

How do I safely restart a Mac with a black screen?

When normal shutdown is impossible, Apple’s documented forced-shutdown step is to hold the power button (or Touch ID) for up to 10 seconds until the Mac turns off, then press it normally.

  1. Disconnect printers, external drives, phones, hubs, docks, and other nonessential accessories. Leave only the charger connected if you need power.
  2. Press and hold the Mac’s power button or Touch ID for up to 10 seconds. Release it when the Mac turns off.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button once to start the Mac.
  4. Watch for any image, Apple logo, startup options, or Recovery screen before reconnecting accessories.

A forced shutdown can discard unsaved work, so use it only when the Mac will not respond normally. If the Mac starts after accessories are removed, reconnect devices one at a time to identify a peripheral, hub, or dock that interferes with startup or video.

Should I reset the SMC?

An SMC reset is relevant only to some older Intel Macs. Apple silicon Macs do not need a separate SMC reset; a normal shutdown and restart handles the equivalent power-management reset. Do not apply an Intel-only procedure to an Apple silicon Mac.

What should I check before changing software?

Simple display-state errors can look like a dead Mac. Increase brightness using the keyboard controls or the display controls available on your model. If the screen is black only when the laptop lid is closed, connect the Mac to power and use an external keyboard and mouse; closed-lid operation requires those conditions.

  • Confirm that the monitor itself is switched on and set to the input used by the Mac.
  • Reseat the monitor’s power cord and its video cable at both ends.
  • Remove a hub or dock from the chain while diagnosing and connect the monitor directly to the Mac.
  • Check whether the cable or adapter supports the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
  • Try a known-good, properly rated USB-C or Thunderbolt display cable or video adapter.

A connector can fit physically and still fail electrically or lack the bandwidth required by the chosen resolution and refresh rate. A cable that works for charging or data is not automatically suitable for video.

Why is my external monitor black when the Mac is working?

External-display failures are commonly caused by monitor power, a loose connection, an unsupported cable or adapter, a dock, or a display that macOS has not detected. Diagnose that path separately from the built-in screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I test the cable and adapter?

  1. Turn off or disconnect the monitor, then reseat its power and video connections.
  2. Bypass every hub and dock. Plug the monitor’s cable or adapter directly into the Mac.
  3. Use a known-good USB-C/Thunderbolt display cable or adapter rated for the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
  4. If possible, test the same Mac with another monitor or test the monitor with another computer. This identifies which component follows the fault.

For USB-C video, the accessory must provide the required DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt capability. The connector shape alone does not establish that support.

How do I force macOS to look for the monitor?

Open the Displays settings. Hold the Option key to reveal Detect Displays, select it, and allow macOS a moment to rescan. Restart after the direct-connection test if the monitor remains dark. If the display works directly but not through the dock, the dock, its firmware, its cable, or its bandwidth is the likely limiting link.

How do I use Safe Mode to test a black screen?

Safe Mode helps determine whether software that loads during startup is involved. The procedure differs for Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so identify the processor before starting.

Apple silicon (M-series) Macs

  1. Shut down the Mac. If it is unresponsive, hold the power button for up to 10 seconds.
  2. Press and continue holding the power button until startup options appear.
  3. Select the startup disk.
  4. Hold the Shift key, then choose Continue in Safe Mode.

If the screen appears in Safe Mode but not during a normal startup, recently loaded software is a strong suspect. Remove or update startup items, display utilities, drivers, or other software added shortly before the problem began, then restart normally.

Intel Macs

Use Apple’s Intel Safe Mode startup procedure for your model. If the Mac reaches Safe Mode, compare that result with a normal startup; a difference points toward software loaded during startup rather than a completely failed panel. Because Intel startup behavior varies by model and firmware, use Apple’s current instructions instead of guessing a key combination.

Safe Mode is diagnostic, not a permanent operating mode. It may load fewer drivers and startup items, so a successful Safe Mode image does not prove every display feature is healthy.

What should I do if the built-in screen stays blank?

Use macOS Recovery when a persistent blank screen survives a clean power cycle and accessory removal. Recovery starts a separate environment, allowing you to test the startup disk before reinstalling the operating system.

Enter Recovery

  1. On Apple silicon, hold the power button until startup options appear, then choose Options and continue.
  2. On an Intel Mac, use the Recovery startup procedure appropriate to that model.
  3. If Recovery displays normally, the panel and basic graphics path can produce an image outside the normal macOS startup.

Run First Aid before reinstalling

  1. In Recovery, open Disk Utility.
  2. Choose the startup disk and run First Aid.
  3. Allow the check and any repairs to finish, then restart the Mac.
  4. If the blank screen returns, enter Recovery again and choose the macOS reinstall option.

Repair the startup disk before reinstalling macOS. Reinstallation addresses damaged or missing system software; it does not repair a failed display panel, graphics component, cable, or monitor.

Observation Likely direction Next action
Image appears after a direct external connection Cable, adapter, dock, or detection path Replace or reconfigure the failing link and verify its ratings
Image appears in Safe Mode only Startup software or a loaded driver Remove recently added startup software and update compatible components
Recovery displays, normal macOS does not System software, startup disk, or startup configuration Run Disk Utility First Aid, then reinstall macOS if needed
No image in normal startup or Recovery Possible display, graphics, power, or logic-board hardware fault Arrange Apple or Apple Authorized Service Provider evaluation

This is a troubleshooting direction, not a failure-rate estimate. A Mac that produces no image through Recovery should not be subjected to repeated reinstalls in the hope that hardware will recover.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek service?

Escalate when the built-in display remains blank after the clean power cycle, accessory removal, Safe Mode attempt, and Recovery test—or when no image appears through Recovery at all. Apple’s guidance indicates service may be required when the blank startup screen continues.

  • Record whether the Mac makes startup sounds, responds to the power button, or works with an external display.
  • Bring the Mac, charger, and the cable or adapter that reproduces the issue.
  • Tell the technician whether the screen works in Safe Mode or Recovery and whether the problem began after an update, drop, liquid exposure, or accessory change.

Do not open the Mac or repeatedly force power cycles if there are signs of liquid damage, unusual heat, smoke, swelling, or a burning smell. Disconnect power and seek professional help.

Which cable or adapter should I use for an external-monitor test?

Choose a USB-C display cable for MacBook or a compliant Thunderbolt/USB-C video adapter that explicitly supports your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate. A universal “USB-C” label is not enough: verify DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support, connector type, and the required bandwidth.

Use the simplest path during diagnosis: Mac port directly to monitor input, with no dock or hub. Once that works, add the dock back and test it separately. This avoids buying an accessory as a blind fix and makes the recommendation specific to the monitor’s requirements.

What is the fastest decision path for a black Mac screen?

  1. Decide whether the built-in display, the external display, or both are blank.
  2. Hold power for up to 10 seconds, disconnect nonessential accessories, and restart.
  3. Raise brightness and verify monitor power, input, and closed-lid requirements.
  4. Connect an external monitor directly and test a properly rated cable or adapter.
  5. Use Safe Mode appropriate to Apple silicon or Intel.
  6. Enter Recovery, run Disk Utility First Aid, and reinstall macOS only after disk repair if the blank screen persists.
  7. If Recovery also produces no image, arrange service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Mac be on if the screen is completely black?

Yes. Power indicators, keyboard response, sounds, or network activity can continue while the display signal is missing. Those signs cannot distinguish a failed panel from a cable, graphics, startup-software, or macOS problem.

Will closing and reopening a MacBook fix a black screen?

It may re-trigger display wake, but it is not a substitute for checking power, brightness, and the video path. If you use closed-lid mode, the Mac must be connected to power with an external keyboard and mouse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a charging-only USB-C cable run an external monitor?

Not necessarily. Video requires DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt capability and enough bandwidth for the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate; charging support alone proves none of those.

Does reinstalling macOS repair a black display?

Only when damaged system software is responsible and Recovery itself displays normally. Reinstallation cannot fix a failed panel, graphics hardware, monitor, cable, adapter, or dock.
