Artificial intelligence (AI) is the umbrella field; machine learning (ML) is one method inside it. AI aims to make systems perform tasks associated with human intelligence, including perception, language understanding, reasoning, planning, learning and action. ML trains a model on examples so it can discover patterns and improve predictions or decisions without receiving every rule by hand.

That means an AI product may use ML, but it can also use fixed rules, search, optimization, planning or robotics. A spam filter, recommender or fraud detector is an ML model; when that model is connected to an interface, safeguards and actions in a real application, it becomes part of a broader AI system. Deep learning is a narrower type of ML, and generative AI is an application area built largely on ML and deep learning.

What is the difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning?

AI describes the goal or capability of a system: sensing its environment, reasoning about information, communicating, deciding what to do or adapting its behavior. ML describes a way to build part of that system by learning statistical patterns from data. In plain language, AI is the destination—an apparently intelligent capability—while ML is one route for getting there.

Definitions are not perfectly uniform. The U.S. General Services Administration and the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) both note that no universally accepted definition of AI exists, while ML is generally more precisely defined. Google Cloud characterizes AI as enabling a machine or system to “sense, reason, act, or adapt like a human,” and ML as an AI application that extracts knowledge from data and learns autonomously. Stanford HAI describes ML as learning patterns and making decisions from data without explicitly programmed rules; NIST emphasizes systems that adapt and learn from data to improve accuracy.

Those descriptions overlap, but the practical boundary is stable: AI is the broad field and system-level objective, and ML is a data-driven subfield and technique.

Is machine learning a subset of AI?

Yes. The usual hierarchy is artificial intelligence → machine learning → deep learning. Generative AI is a modern application area built mostly with ML and deep-learning techniques, rather than a separate level that replaces them.

Artificial intelligence: the umbrella

AI includes software and machines designed to perform tasks people associate with intelligence. Depending on the application, that can involve interpreting images or speech, planning a route, searching a large set of possible moves, applying rules, controlling a robot, or learning from examples. A complete AI system can combine several of these approaches.

Machine learning: learning from examples

ML algorithms fit a model to training data. The model may classify an input, predict a number, rank choices, detect an anomaly or generate content. Instead of an engineer writing a rule for every case, the system adjusts its internal parameters to capture patterns in representative examples. Performance depends heavily on the quantity, quality and coverage of those examples.

Deep learning: neural networks with many layers

Deep learning is a subset of ML based on multi-layer neural networks. It is particularly useful when inputs such as images, audio, video or language contain complex, high-dimensional patterns. Not every ML problem needs a deep neural network; decision trees, linear models, support-vector machines, nearest-neighbor methods and clustering remain useful approaches.

Generative AI: producing new content

Generative AI refers to systems that create text, images, audio, video, code or other data. Most current generative systems use deep neural networks trained with ML, but “generative” describes what the system does, not a replacement for the AI–ML relationship.

How do AI and ML differ in scope, data and output?

The following comparison separates the system-level idea of AI from the learning method of ML.

Axis Artificial intelligence Machine learning
Scope A broad field or complete capability aimed at intelligent perception, reasoning, learning, planning, communication or action. A subfield and method focused on learning patterns from data.
Objective Make a system perform or support an intelligent task. Improve predictions or decisions for a defined task as training data and experience accumulate.
Methods May include rules, search, optimization, planning, robotics, natural-language processing and ML. Uses supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement and related statistical or neural methods.
Data dependence Varies. A rule-based system may need little or no training data; an ML-based system depends on examples. Requires training data, and quality, quantity and representativeness affect results.
Output A complete capability or product, such as an assistant, robot, recommender or decision system. A trained model that predicts, classifies, ranks, detects or generates for a particular task.
Evaluation Task success, safety, reliability and behavior in its operating context. Predictive accuracy and generalization on suitable evaluation data.

The distinction matters because a highly accurate model is not automatically a useful or safe AI product. The surrounding system must collect the right inputs, expose understandable results, handle failures and carry out actions appropriately.

Can an AI system work without machine learning?

Yes. AI predates modern ML and can be built with explicitly authored rules, logic, search, optimization or planning. If a problem has a small set of known cases and stable rules, a conventional program may be easier to verify and maintain than a learned model.

Rule-based reasoning

A rules engine can map conditions to actions: if a player lacks a required item, show the relevant objective; if a transaction exceeds a limit, request another check. Such behavior can be intelligent in the everyday sense without learning from examples.

Search and planning

Search algorithms examine possible states to select a route, schedule or move. Planning systems can sequence actions toward a goal using a model of the world. They may be combined with ML, but neither requires a trained model.

Hybrid systems

Many practical products use both approaches. ML can recognize speech or estimate a prediction, while deterministic code applies permissions, safety constraints, business rules and the final workflow. Calling the entire product “AI” does not mean every component learns.

Where is machine learning used in games and interactive software?

ML is the learning component in many familiar functions. The examples below describe the role of a model; a finished game or service would still need interfaces, rules and operational controls around it.

Spam and abuse filtering

A classifier can learn patterns in messages or account activity and flag likely spam, harassment or automated abuse. Human review, appeal handling and explicit policy rules are separate parts of the broader moderation system.

Recommendations

A recommender can learn from clicks, play time, ratings or other signals to rank games, levels, videos or in-game items. The product must also enforce age, safety and business constraints rather than exposing the model’s raw ranking.

Image and voice recognition

ML models can classify images, transcribe speech or identify objects in video. In a game, those capabilities could support accessibility features, search or moderation; the surrounding application determines what action follows a prediction.

Fraud and anomaly detection

A model can learn unusual patterns in purchases, login behavior or match results and assign a risk score. Investigation workflows and fixed thresholds turn that score into an operational decision.

Game-specific behavior

For non-player characters, ML could estimate which action is likely to fit a situation, while a planner or rule system keeps behavior within level design and safety limits. Matchmaking can use learned estimates of skill or connection quality, but the service still needs explicit eligibility and queue rules. These are examples of architectures, not claims that every commercial game uses them.

How does a learned model become an AI product?

A model alone is an input-output component. The product around it supplies context, decisions and safeguards.

  1. Collect inputs: gather sensor readings, text, images, telemetry or other signals relevant to the task.
  2. Prepare and label data: remove errors, represent important cases and define the target the model should learn.
  3. Train and evaluate: fit the model, then test it on data that reflects the situations it will encounter. A score on one dataset is not proof of real-world reliability.
  4. Integrate the model: connect its prediction or generation to application code, a user interface, a game engine, a database or an actuator.
  5. Add controls: apply permissions, content filters, rate limits, deterministic rules, explanations, logging and human review where needed.
  6. Monitor and update: check for changing data, degraded accuracy, unexpected behavior and new failure cases, then retrain or revise the surrounding logic.

This is why an “AI assistant,” “AI moderation tool” or “AI game agent” can contain substantial non-ML software. The intelligence is the end-to-end behavior; ML is one component that may provide perception, prediction or generation.

Which machine-learning methods are inside AI systems?

The learning method should match the task and the available feedback.

  • Supervised learning: learns from examples paired with known labels, such as legitimate versus fraudulent transactions.
  • Unsupervised learning: finds structure without supplied labels, for example grouping similar behavior with clustering.
  • Reinforcement learning: learns which actions to take by receiving rewards or penalties from an environment.
  • Statistical and classical models: linear and logistic regression, decision trees, random forests, support-vector machines and nearest neighbors can perform well on structured data.
  • Neural networks: flexible models that include the deep-learning systems used for many language, image, audio and generative applications.

These are ML choices, not competing definitions of AI. An AI application may use one model, several models or no learned model at all.

How should I decide whether a problem needs ML?

Start with the task and its success measure, not with the label “AI.” A learned approach is a candidate when the desired behavior depends on patterns that are difficult to specify manually and you have representative examples or a way to gather feedback.

  1. State the decision: define exactly what the system must predict, rank, detect or generate.
  2. Set a measurable outcome: choose an error, quality, latency, safety or user-impact metric before selecting a model.
  3. Try the simplest reliable method: test fixed rules or a small statistical model when the cases are limited and well understood.
  4. Check the data: confirm that examples cover important users, languages, devices, play styles and unusual cases, rather than only easy historical cases.
  5. Assess consequences: determine whether a wrong prediction merely needs correction or could lock an account, expose private information or create a safety problem.
  6. Design the non-ML pieces: specify interfaces, fallback behavior, permissions, explanations, review and monitoring before deployment.

This task-first approach avoids adding ML where a transparent rule is sufficient and avoids treating a promising prototype as a finished AI system.

Why can two systems both be called AI when they work so differently?

“AI” names a broad objective, so it covers systems with very different internals. A chess search program, a speech-recognition model and a robot that combines vision, planning and control can all be AI even though their algorithms, data requirements and failure modes differ.

Marketing language also broadens the label. Dstl reported in 2025 on a study of more than 2,800 European startups that claimed to use AI; only 40% were found to actually use AI according to that study. The figure is a warning about loose terminology, not a universal estimate of the AI industry, and the Dstl page does not identify the original study in the quoted passage. To evaluate a claim, ask what task is automated, what data or rules are used, how performance is measured and what happens when the system is wrong.

Is today’s AI general intelligence?

No. The GSA describes all AI currently in place as task-specific, or narrow AI. Deployed systems are built for bounded jobs such as recognizing speech, ranking recommendations, detecting fraud or controlling a particular process. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) remains a theoretical idea of a system with broad, human-like capability across many tasks; it should not be treated as a description of ordinary ML products.

What should I remember about AI versus ML?

Use the hierarchy to keep the terms precise: AI is the broad field and system capability; ML is a data-learning method within AI; deep learning is a neural-network subset of ML; and generative AI is an application area that commonly relies on deep learning. A useful product description then names the actual task, the model’s role, the data it learned from and the rules or people that control its output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a game use AI with no training data?

Yes. A game can use authored behavior trees, pathfinding, search or planning to produce intelligent-looking actions without fitting a model to examples. It may still be described as AI because the term refers to the capability, not a requirement to learn.

Does adding more data always make a machine-learning model better?

No. Additional examples help only when they are relevant, accurate and representative of the cases the model will face. Duplicated, biased or mislabeled data can leave performance unchanged or make important errors worse.

Is generative AI the same thing as deep learning?

No. Deep learning describes a class of neural-network methods, while generative AI describes systems that create new content. Most prominent generative tools use deep learning, but the terms refer to different aspects of a system.

Why can an ML model perform well in testing but fail after release?

The live environment may differ from the training and evaluation data: player behavior can change, new devices can appear or fraud tactics can adapt. Monitoring for distribution shifts and defining fallback actions are therefore part of operating the AI system, not optional polish.
