Short answer: On PC, update Mafia III and choose 60 FPS or Unlimited in the in-game Display/Video menu. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, install and launch the current-generation Mafia III: Definitive Edition build, not the legacy PS4 or Xbox One version. If only a movie-style cutscene appears to run at 30 FPS, that can be normal: some pre-rendered cinematics are intentionally 30 FPS even when gameplay is 60 FPS.
Why Mafia III can still show 30 FPS after the upgrade
There are three different situations that look similar on screen:

What the 60 FPS versions actually provide

These distinctions come from two separate announcements. 2K Support’s PC patch announcement documented the three selectable PC modes in 2016. A report dated 8 October 2026 reproducing the current-generation patch details states that Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S supports 60 FPS gameplay, while some pre-rendered movies play at 30 FPS.

Fixing the frame rate on PC
1. Finish the game update
- Open the launcher or game client where Mafia III is installed.
- Allow all queued updates to download and finish installing.
- Start the game only after the client reports that the installation is current.
The 60 FPS and Unlimited choices were added by a PC patch. If the installation has not received that update, the relevant options may not be available.
2. Select 60 FPS or Unlimited
- Launch Mafia III.
- Open the in-game Display or Video menu.
- Find the frame-rate option.
- Select 60 FPS for a defined target, or Unlimited if you want the game to render above 60 when the hardware and display path can handle it.
- Apply or save the setting, then return to ordinary gameplay to evaluate the result.
2K’s patch notice lists exactly three PC choices: 30, 60 and unlimited frames per second. Use 60 FPS when you want a straightforward cap and predictable load; Unlimited is useful only if you have a reason to allow rendering above 60 and your display can show the additional frames.

3. Check whether the problem is a cap or performance
If the menu is set to 60 FPS or Unlimited but the game fluctuates below 60, that is a performance problem rather than proof that the frame-rate cap is still active. Check the following in order:

- Resolution: Temporarily lower the game resolution or demanding quality settings. A higher pixel load can reduce frame rate even when the cap is configured correctly.
- GPU and CPU load: Use your operating system or graphics-driver monitoring tools while playing. A component running at or near full utilization identifies a likely bottleneck.
- Display refresh rate: Confirm that the monitor or television is configured for a refresh rate of at least 60 Hz. A display set to 30 Hz can make motion appear like 30 FPS even when the game is producing more frames.
- Drivers: Install current graphics drivers appropriate for your GPU, then restart the computer before testing again.
- Thermals: Watch for sustained heat or clock-speed reduction. A system that starts near 60 and falls later may be throttling rather than obeying a 30 FPS limit.
- Background applications: Close unnecessary recording, overlay, browser and other high-load processes, then retest the same scene.
No guaranteed PC specification for sustaining 60 FPS has been established here, so a selected mode should be treated as an instruction to the renderer, not as a hardware benchmark.

4. Recheck settings after an update
The 2K PC patch announcement specifically warned that keyboard mappings were reset. It does not promise that every user setting remains unchanged. After an update, revisit the Display/Video menu and verify the frame-rate choice before changing graphics settings or troubleshooting hardware.
Getting 60 FPS on PlayStation 5
Install the current-generation title
- Open your PlayStation 5 game library or the relevant store listing.
- Confirm that the installed title is the current-generation Mafia III: Definitive Edition, rather than a backward-compatible PS4 installation.
- Install any available update for that current-generation release.
- Launch that version and test during normal, controllable gameplay.
The current-generation release is the version identified as supporting 60 FPS gameplay. A PS5 can run older PS4 software, but simply running the legacy build does not turn it into the 60 FPS current-generation release.

Test gameplay, not a movie
Drive, walk and fight for several seconds after control returns to you. If gameplay is smooth but a story sequence appears to be 30 FPS, compare it with the next playable section before changing settings. The current-generation patch details state that many cinematics are rendered in real time and play at 60 FPS, while pre-rendered movies remain 30 FPS.
Getting 60 FPS on Xbox Series X|S
Find the separate Series listing
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console.
- Search for the exact listing “Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S.”
- Install that current-generation version if your account is eligible to access it.
- Start the newly installed title, rather than selecting an older Mafia III entry from your recent-games list.
The release distinction is the key Xbox troubleshooting step. The 2026 report describes the Series X|S version as a new version that must be located and installed separately. Continuing to launch the older Xbox One build will not produce the current-generation 60 FPS behavior, regardless of the console’s capability.

Verify the result in a playable section
Once you have launched the Series X|S listing, test ordinary gameplay. Do not use a pre-rendered movie as the only check, because those scenes can remain 30 FPS by design. If gameplay itself still looks limited to 30, quit and confirm the title name on the installed game tile before investigating display hardware.
Why cutscenes can still look like 30 FPS
Mafia III does not use one frame-rate format for every piece of presentation. According to the current-generation patch details, many cinematics are rendered in real time and can play at 60 FPS, but some are pre-rendered movies that play at 30 FPS. A visible change when a cinematic begins therefore does not necessarily indicate a failed upgrade.
Use player control as the dividing line: a pre-rendered sequence can be 30 FPS, while the gameplay that resumes afterward should be judged separately. There is no setting in the documented upgrade information that converts those pre-rendered movies to 60 FPS.

What the upgrade does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee 60 FPS on every PC. The PC patch exposes 60 FPS and Unlimited modes, but sustained performance depends on the computer, resolution, drivers, heat and competing workloads.
- It does not make every cinematic 60 FPS. Pre-rendered movies remain 30 FPS in the current-generation console release.
- It does not upgrade the legacy console executable by itself. On Xbox Series X|S especially, the separately listed current-generation build must be installed and launched.
A reliable order for retesting
Change one variable at a time so the cause remains clear. On PC, update first, verify the Display/Video option second, then check hardware and system load only if the selected mode is not being sustained. On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, verify the installed title before judging image motion, and always make the final comparison during gameplay rather than a pre-rendered movie.
