The order below is about game identity and theme—not which deck wins more often. All four are ready-to-play Commander decks, and the best fit depends on which Final Fantasy world and characters you want to play.
How this ranking works
Wizards of the Coast’s four Final Fantasy Commander precons each focus on a different numbered game. Their official product materials identify the game, color identity, featured commanders, and complete decklist. The ranking below weighs how clearly each deck expresses its game’s identity and the appeal of that theme; it is not a mechanical-strength ranking. Wizards has not published comparative win rates or test results for these decks.
The game-by-game approach reflects the design brief. Lead designer Daniel Holt said, “Because of each game’s depth of story and character pool, we decided to pick four game titles and make entire Commander decks devoted to each one.” He also described a setting constraint: “Proper nouns and legendary cards from Magic’s Multiverse don’t exist in these partners’ worlds, so without giving them different names, certain Commander staples aren’t usable in preconstructed Commander decks.” These remarks explain the decks’ game-specific framing and card-name choices, not their relative performance. The four Final Fantasy Commander decks, ranked
1. Limit Break — Final Fantasy VII (red-green-white)
Best theme-first pick for FFVII fans. “Limit Break” immediately evokes the source game, and the official decklist gives this entry a distinct FFVII cast and framing. Choose it if you want your Commander deck to represent Final Fantasy VII specifically. Its first-place position reflects that clear identity, not evidence that it is more powerful than the others.
#1 Best Overall
- GET ALL 4 FINAL FANTASY-THEMED COMMANDER DECKS—FINAL FANTASY VI: Revival Trance, FINAL FANTASY VII: Limit Break, FINAL FANTASY X: Counter Blitz, and FINAL FANTASY XIV: Scions and Spellcraft
- BATTLE ALONGSIDE ICONIC FINAL FANTASY HEROES—Join forces with Terra, Herald of Hope in the Revival Trance deck, Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER in the Limit Break deck, Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian in the Counter Blitz deck, and Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed in the Scions and Spellcraft deck
- NEW CARDS plus ALL NEW ART—Each ready-to-play deck contains 100 cards featuring new FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 25 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
- FOIL LEGENDARY CARDS—Each deck also includes 2 Legendary Creature cards with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment that can be played as your commander
- COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Every deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher
2. Revival Trance — Final Fantasy VI (red-white-black)
Best for a dramatic FFVI hook. The name “Revival Trance” gives the deck an evocative narrative identity, and its focus on Final Fantasy VI makes the source-game connection easy to recognize. If that setting and cast are your priority, it may be the most satisfying choice regardless of its place in this editorial order.
3. Scions & Spellcraft — Final Fantasy XIV (white-blue-black)
Best for players drawn to the world of FFXIV. Its game-specific title makes the connection to Final Fantasy XIV explicit. Pick it for that setting and the characters represented in its list; the ranking does not imply that it has a weaker play pattern.
Rank #2
- FINAL FANTASY VI-THEMED DECK—Battle your friends with FINAL FANTASY VI’s iconic heroes, villains, and spells with the strategic gameplay of the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game
- YOU CAN’T DESTROY EVERYTHING—Fill your graveyard and revive your fallen heroes as you fight alongside Terra, Herald of Hope to restore balance to the world.
- 25 NEW CARDS plus ALL NEW ART—All 100 cards in this ready-to-play deck feature new FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 25 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
- 2 FOIL LEGENDARY CARDS—Each deck includes 2 Legendary Creature cards with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment that can be played as your commander
- COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher
4. Counter Blitz — Final Fantasy X (green-white-blue)
Best for an FFX identity. “Counter Blitz” is a concise label for the Final Fantasy X deck. It sits fourth only under this article’s theme-first ordering; that is not a claim that it is mechanically inferior. If FFX is the game you want to bring to the table, this is the natural match.
Compare the decks by game and colors
| Deck | Final Fantasy game | Color identity | Theme-first fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit Break | Final Fantasy VII | Red-green-white | Distinct FFVII cast and an immediately recognizable game reference |
| Revival Trance | Final Fantasy VI | Red-white-black | Evocative title and a clear FFVI identity |
| Scions & Spellcraft | Final Fantasy XIV | White-blue-black | Game-specific name for players drawn to FFXIV |
| Counter Blitz | Final Fantasy X | Green-white-blue | Concise FFX identity |
Deck names, source games, and color identities are from Wizards’ official Commander decklists. Colors identify each deck’s Commander color identity; they do not, by themselves, establish how strong it is.

- Set of 4 Commander Decks: Each contains
- 100-card ready-to-play Magic deck (2 foil legendaries, 98 nonfoil cards)
- Bonus: 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack
What comes in each product
Each regular precon is a 100-card Commander deck. The package includes two traditional-foil featured commanders, 98 non-foil cards, tokens, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, a reference card, and a deck box. Counter Blitz differs in its token contents: it includes four punch-out counter cards and six double-sided tokens; the other three decks include ten double-sided tokens. Wizards lists the full card contents in its official decklists.
Regular or Collector’s Edition?
The Collector’s Edition keeps the same cards as the corresponding Commander deck but applies surge foil treatment across all 100 cards; Wizards also specifies surge-foil tokens. It is a finish option, not a different decklist. Details are in Wizards’ product and decklist announcement and its Collector’s Edition announcement.

Which deck should you choose?
- Choose Limit Break if FFVII is your priority and you want the most immediately legible game-specific title in this ranking.
- Choose Revival Trance if you want an evocative FFVI-themed deck.
- Choose Scions & Spellcraft if you want the FFXIV setting represented.
- Choose Counter Blitz if you want the FFX cast and theme.
If you are choosing by expected performance rather than Final Fantasy theme, this ranking cannot settle the question. A useful competitive comparison would need a defined play environment, assumptions about upgrades, and comparative gameplay evidence; the official product and design pages do not provide those results.
