Magic: The Gathering’s Future Looks Like Fortnite—But Fans Disagree

Magic’s crossovers prompt Fortnite comparisons, but the analogy has limits. Wizards plans a mix of original settings and outside franchises, while player reactions vary.

Magic: The Gathering is adding more recognizable outside franchises to its card sets, prompting some players to compare its direction to Fortnite’s crossover-heavy approach. The analogy captures the visibility of those collaborations, not identical games or business models. Wizards of the Coast plans to keep releasing both Magic’s own worlds and licensed crossovers, and online discussion shows enthusiasm as well as fatigue. It does not establish which view most players hold.

Why players are comparing Magic to Fortnite

The comparison is about how often familiar outside worlds appear, not about Magic becoming Fortnite. In a September 2025 Reddit discussion, one player asked, “Does Magic feel too much like Fortnite with all the crossovers?” Other comments likewise used Fortnite as shorthand for a game increasingly associated with collaborations. That thread is self-selected and anecdotal; it cannot measure the wider player base’s opinion.

Magic’s crossovers are branded as Universes Beyond. Wizards of the Coast defined the line in 2021 as “a brand within Magic: The Gathering—existing in addition to and alongside our existing line of products.” The company said it hopes fans of those worlds and characters will discover Magic through the products and join its community. Wizards’ original Universes Beyond announcement describes the line and that goal.

That makes the Fortnite comparison useful as a description of pop-culture visibility, but limited as a claim about how either game works. Magic releases physical card products tied to outside franchises; the evidence here does not establish that its business model, mechanics, or audience are the same as Fortnite’s.

Magic’s announced slate mixes its own worlds with crossovers

Wizards’ September 2025 announcement for 2026 included six major sets: three rooted in Magic settings and three based on other intellectual properties. The announced in-universe sets were Lorwyn Eclipsed, Secrets of Strixhaven, and Reality Fracture; the announced crossovers were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel Super Heroes, The Hobbit, and Star Trek. These are announced plans, not a record of how players responded or a guarantee that every schedule detail will remain unchanged. The 2026 release calendar identifies the lineup and release timing.

GamesRadar reported in May 2026 that Magic head designer Mark Rosewater described 2026 as an outlier and projected that future years would be “three and three”: three in-universe releases and three Universes Beyond releases. That is a reported projection, not an immutable promise from Wizards. If sustained, it would mean crossovers are a regular part of the release mix rather than an occasional experiment.

What the disagreement is really about

Frequency and room to breathe

For some players, the concern is less about any one franchise than the pace. A stream of crossover sets can leave less space between outside worlds, and comments in the Reddit discussion included “I’m so beyond burnt out.” That is one person’s reaction, not evidence of a majority view. Others welcome particular collaborations or simply do not mind them.

Magic’s identity and world-building

Magic’s own settings are part of its appeal: players may value the game’s original characters, stories, and worlds as more than a backdrop for card mechanics. From that perspective, frequent imports can make the game feel less distinct. The counterargument is that Magic has room for both its own settings and recognizable guest worlds. Rosewater, quoted by GamesRadar in August 2026, said: “Whether you like or dislike Universe Beyond, it has fundamentally changed the nature of what the game is.” The statement acknowledges a meaningful shift; it does not say every player welcomes that shift.

Whether players can avoid crossover cards

Some criticism concerns where the cards appear: a crossover may feel easy to ignore as a product, but less so if its cards turn up in the play environments a player chooses. The available 2021 Wizards statement about format legality describes the policy at that time, not a current rule for every card or format. Check the relevant format’s current card legality rather than assuming that all Universes Beyond cards are either included or excluded.

New-player appeal versus longtime-player attachment

A familiar franchise may give someone a welcoming entry point to Magic, matching Wizards’ stated hope for Universes Beyond. For established players, however, familiarity with another franchise may not offset concern about tone, continuity, or the prominence of Magic’s own settings. Those are competing priorities, not proof that one side understands the game better.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you

Magic’s crossover direction is a real change in the game’s product mix, and Wizards’ reported future projection suggests it intends to continue. But “fans are split” should be read as a description of visible disagreement, not a measured result: the cited online conversations are anecdotes, and the available sources provide no representative statistic on support or opposition.

For players deciding whether the change matters to them, the practical question is what they value most: Magic’s original worlds, access to favorite franchises, the cards and formats they play, or the cadence of new releases. Wizards’ 2026 announcement names Amazon and local game stores as retail channels for Magic products; that confirms a physical-product context, not any particular current listing or price. Wizards’ 2021 product explanation said Universes Beyond products would generally be sold through Magic channels. That statement is historical and should not be treated as a guarantee about every later product or retailer.
