Wizards of the Coast has made Universes Beyond a more central part of Magic: The Gathering’s release strategy: starting in 2025, it said releases would be spaced out more, and upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases would be legal in all formats. The phrase “new era” is fair shorthand for that shift, but Wizards used it to describe Magic’s future broadly—not as the formal name of a Universes Beyond initiative.
What Wizards officially announced
In its October 25, 2024 announcement about Foundations, Wizards called the set “the start of a whole new era for Magic.” It paired that broader language with two concrete policy changes: a more spread-out release cadence beginning in 2025, and all-format legality for upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases. Wizards’ announcement said: “Upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases will be legal in all formats.”

That distinction matters. The announcement supports calling this a new era for Magic that brings Universes Beyond further into the regular schedule; it does not establish “the dawn of a new era for Universes Beyond” as an official program name. Nor does the policy statement settle the legality of every individual card in every format: check current format rules and card-specific information before relying on a particular card.
What changes for the release schedule
A broader mix of Magic settings
Wizards said the schedule would include both Magic settings and Universes Beyond, and that releases would be spread out further. This describes the intended direction, not a published numerical comparison of release counts or a complete old-versus-new calendar. The strategy was already visible in announced plans for FINAL FANTASY in June 2025 and Marvel’s Spider-Man in late 2025.

Crossovers on the 2026 slate
In a September 30, 2025 lineup announcement, Wizards placed three major crossovers among its planned 2026 releases: Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes for June, Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit for August, and Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek for November. The slate showed the range of the approach: Marvel continued its collaboration with Magic, The Hobbit returned to Middle-earth, and Star Trek was planned as a tribute to the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Those dates are from Wizards’ announcement; release timing and product details can change.
Wizards later specified that The Hobbit was planned for worldwide tabletop and MTG Arena release in August 2026. It described Star Trek as the final Magic set of 2026, planned for November, featuring characters, stories, and spaceships from across the franchise, with releases for tabletop and MTG Arena. The September 26, 2025 announcement provides those platform details.

What all-format legality means—and what it does not
Wizards’ October 2024 statement means upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases are intended to be legal across Magic formats, rather than being confined by default to a separate product category. It is a policy announcement, not a guarantee that every card from a crossover is legal in every format forever. Format-specific rules, rotation, bans, and card-level restrictions still matter, so consult current official format information when deciding whether a particular card can be played.
Signs of commercial momentum, according to Hasbro
Hasbro’s Q1 2026 investor remarks reported that Lorwyn Eclipsed became the best-selling Magic premiere set to that point, and that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond collaboration exceeded internal expectations. These are company-reported claims, not independently verified sales measurements; the remarks gave no unit or revenue total for the set’s ranking. Hasbro’s investor remarks also said demand for Magic’s backlist included Avatar: The Last Airbender and FINAL FANTASY.

Hasbro also reported 13% revenue growth for Wizards of the Coast in Q1 2026; that is not a Magic-only growth figure.
