A Seville court has sentenced José Rafael G. M. to three years and six months in prison after he admitted setting fire to Las Postas Café-Bar in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Spain, when staff could not provide mayonnaise for his sandwich. The fire on 20 August 2025 sent customers, including children, fleeing and caused minor injuries to two workers. The court also imposed a 500-metre, 10-year exclusion order and €360 in fines for the assaults.
What happened at the café?
José Rafael G. M. asked for mayonnaise with a sandwich at Las Postas Café-Bar on 20 August 2025. Staff told him they did not have any. Owner José Antonio Caballero said the business mainly served breakfast and, later in the day, drinks, coffees and occasional ready-prepared sandwiches rather than full meals.

Caballero explained that the bar had no kitchen and did not keep sauces. “He asked for mayonnaise and the waiter told him no, because we don’t have any,” he said.
How did the complaint escalate into a fire?
After leaving the café, José Rafael went to a nearby petrol station and bought fuel. He then returned carrying a plastic bottle reported by Dexerto as holding 1.5 litres. He poured petrol over the counter and ignited it, according to accounts of the prosecution case and his later admission.

People inside ran from the premises as the fire took hold. Customers included children, and two workers suffered minor injuries in the incident. Caballero described the aftermath as “There’s no explanation. It was awful.”
What sentence did the Seville court impose?
On 21 October 2026, the Seville court approved a plea sentence of three years and six months in prison. Prosecutors had initially sought 11 years for the fire offense, but reduced the request after José Rafael admitted guilt and paid more than €9,200 toward civil damages. The available reports identify the conviction as a fire-related offense but do not reproduce the full judgment or specify the Spanish Criminal Code article. The sentence therefore should not be treated as a ruling on a particular statutory section.

Did the mayonnaise company pay for repairs?
Weeks after the fire, Hellmann’s was reported to have offered help with repair costs because the missing condiment was central to the incident’s widely reported explanation. The published accounts do not establish how much, if anything, the company ultimately paid or confirm that every repair had been completed.
Why did the plea reduce the prosecution request?
The reduction from an initial 11-year request to the agreed three-and-a-half-year sentence followed two forms of mitigation reported by Agencia EFE: José Rafael’s admission of guilt and his deposit of more than €9,200 toward civil damages.
