If your PS5 is full, start with the free fix: open Settings > Storage, identify the largest games and media, delete installations you no longer use, and use Customize to remove optional add-ons when a game offers it. Deleted digital purchases remain in your game library for redownloading. For a larger library, use USB extended storage as an archive or install a compatible internal M.2 SSD when you want PS5 games to remain playable from the added storage. The important distinction is that USB storage can hold PS5 games but cannot run them directly; an M.2 SSD can. Your saves are managed separately from game installations, so check saved-data settings before deleting anything.
What should you do first when PS5 storage is full?
Check the console before buying hardware. The storage screen shows whether games, applications, captures or other data are consuming the available space, and it often reveals that a few large installations account for most of the problem.

- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage.
- Review Console Storage, then open Games and Apps to sort through installed titles.
- Remove completed, inactive or unusually large games first. If a title offers Customize, inspect its optional add-ons or installation portions before removing the entire game.
- Check captures and other media separately. Game deletion does not substitute for cleaning a full capture library.
Storage management is a cycle rather than a one-time purchase decision: delete what you have finished, archive what you want to keep, and reserve internal space for games you intend to play soon.
Can you delete a PS5 game and download it again later?
Yes. Deleting a local installation removes the files from the console, not your entitlement to a purchased digital game. Sony states that deleted purchases can be downloaded again from the game library.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Delete an installation
- Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game or application you no longer need locally.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
When you are ready to play again, open Game Library, find the title in your collection and choose the download option. You will need enough free space for the installation and enough internet access to complete the download. A disc-based owner must keep the disc: reinstalling the data does not remove the requirement to insert the disc when launching that game.
Remove only optional content when available
Some games expose Customize in the Games and Apps storage view. That menu may let you remove an unused language pack, campaign, multiplayer component or add-on without uninstalling every part of the game. The option is title-specific, so do not assume that every game supports selective removal or that the same components are offered by every edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Game installations and saved data are separate categories on PS5. Before deleting anything, open the saved-data controls under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings and confirm that you are removing only the installation, not the save files.
- PlayStation Plus members can upload PS5 and PS4 saved data to cloud storage.
- PS4 saves can also be copied to a USB drive.
- Sony does not support copying PS5 saved data from the console to a USB drive.
Cloud storage is a safeguard for progress, not a place to install games. If a save is important, allow its cloud upload to finish before deleting the corresponding game, and verify the correct account is signed in when you later reinstall it.
Should you use USB extended storage for PS5 games?
Choose USB extended storage when you want an inexpensive, removable archive or when you have a large PS4 library. It can store PS5 games, but PS5 games cannot be played directly from it; they must be copied back to the PS5’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD first.
USB requirements
Sony’s current guidance calls for a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Connect the drive directly to the console rather than through a USB hub. Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time.
Formatting as extended storage erases the drive. Back up anything else on it before formatting, and do not disconnect it while formatting is in progress: interruption can cause data loss, corruption or hardware damage.

What can you play from USB?
- PS5 games: stored on the USB drive, but copied to console storage or M.2 storage before they can launch.
- PS4 games: can be installed to and played directly from USB extended storage.
- Game updates: a PS5 game kept on USB still needs to be moved to playable storage before launching; plan for the transfer time and free space.
Format and safely remove the drive
- Connect the compatible drive directly to a PS5 USB port.
- Follow the console prompt to format it as USB extended storage, or open the storage settings and select the USB drive.
- Move selected games from Game Library or the storage management screen to the USB destination.
- Before unplugging it, open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5.
Do not treat a large USB capacity as equivalent to an internal expansion. Capacity determines how much you can archive; it does not change the PS5-game direct-play restriction.
Is an M.2 SSD better for a playable PS5 library?
Yes, if your priority is keeping PS5 games installed, downloadable and playable on the added storage. A compatible M.2 SSD fits in the PS5 expansion slot, and Sony says PS5 and PS4 games on M.2 storage can be downloaded, copied, updated and launched there.
Compatibility checklist
Before buying, compare the drive and its heatsink with every current console requirement:
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Supported form factors: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Performance guidance: Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- Thermal design: effective heat dissipation is required, and the combined SSD-and-heatsink dimensions must fit the console’s expansion bay.
Check the exact model, dimensions and heatsink before purchase rather than relying on a listing that merely says “M.2.” Sony’s accessories information includes officially licensed examples such as the Western Digital SN850P SSD for PS5, but any drive still has to meet the console’s current interface, capacity and physical requirements.
Install the drive safely
Turn the console off completely, disconnect it and follow Sony’s PS5 M.2 installation instructions for your console revision. The expansion cover, spacer position and retaining screw must be handled in the order shown by Sony. Do not force a drive into the slot, and do not operate the console with a heatsink that exceeds the bay’s height or width limits.
After the console recognizes the drive, it will offer to format it as M.2 storage. Formatting removes existing data from that SSD, so use a new or backed-up drive.
How do you download PS5 games directly to an expansion drive?
Direct downloads to added storage are supported by an installed M.2 SSD, not by USB extended storage for playable PS5 installations.

Set M.2 storage as the installation destination
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Choose Installation Location.
- Set PS5 games, PS4 games or both categories to the M.2 storage destination as appropriate.
With M.2 selected, new compatible downloads and updates can target that drive. USB extended storage remains an archive destination: you can move games there, but a PS5 game must return to console or M.2 storage before play.
Move an existing game to M.2
- Open Game Library and highlight the game.
- Press the Options button.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the M.2 destination and confirm.
All data for a particular game must stay in one storage location. You cannot split a single game’s installation between console storage and M.2 storage to combine their free space.
How do you move PS5 games between internal, M.2 and USB storage?
Use the console’s storage controls for each transfer, and allow enough free space on the destination for the complete installation. A USB archive is useful when you are finished with a game; M.2 is the better destination when you expect to launch it without another copy operation.
- Console to USB: open the Games and Apps storage list, select the title and choose the USB extended-storage destination.
- USB to console or M.2: select the stored PS5 title and choose to move or copy it back before launching.
- Console to M.2: use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps, then select M.2.
- M.2 to console: use the same move control and select console storage when you need to remove the SSD or free its capacity.
Do not unplug either storage device during a move. If a transfer is interrupted, return to the storage screen, confirm where the game is listed and restart the operation only after the destination has enough free space.
Can the PlayStation App manage PS5 storage remotely?
Yes, within limits. PlayStation App can show available PS5 console storage and connected USB extended storage, delete games and remotely download purchased games. It cannot move or copy games between storage locations.
Remote downloads and deletion
Pair the app with the correct console and use its storage or game-library controls to remove an installation or start a download. Remote downloads require the paired PS5 to be in rest mode with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled.
If an M.2 SSD is configured as the default installation location, the app can download to it. When the selected destination lacks room, the app may prompt you to delete games. A prompt to delete is not a transfer command: use the console itself for moving or copying an installed title.

Which storage option fits your library?
Capacity alone does not determine the best choice. Direct playability, download destination, transfer friction and installation complexity matter more than the headline number of terabytes.

How do you move a library to another PS5?
Sony supports copying data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a destination PS5. Prepare both consoles under the same account and follow the on-screen transfer process over the supported connection.
- A USB extended-storage drive can be disconnected safely from the old console and connected to the new one to access its archived games.
- An M.2 SSD can be removed from the source PS5 and installed in the destination PS5, provided the installation and account requirements shown by Sony are met.
- Saved data still needs its own handling. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage where available, and do not assume that moving an installation also moves every save.
Before changing consoles, finish any pending cloud uploads, safely remove USB storage and keep the original disc for disc-based games.

Most storage errors come from selecting the wrong destination, insufficient free space or an incompatible device. Work through the branch that matches the symptom.

The PS5 says there is not enough space
- Reopen Settings > Storage > Games and Apps and remove a completed title or unused add-on.
- Check the destination, not only total console capacity. A game moved to M.2 still needs room on M.2, and a game copied back from USB needs room on console or M.2.
- Remember that a single game cannot be split across console and M.2 storage.
The USB drive is not recognized
- Connect it directly to the PS5, not through a hub.
- Confirm it meets the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-later requirement and 250 GB-to-8 TB capacity range.
- Do not reformat until you have copied off any data you need; formatting erases the drive.
The M.2 SSD is rejected
- Verify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe support; M.2 SATA is not supported.
- Check the form factor, capacity, sequential-read specification and the complete heatsink dimensions.
- Power down and reseat the drive only according to Sony’s installation procedure. Do not force the retaining screw or operate with an oversized heatsink.
A PS5 game appears on USB but will not start
That behavior is expected. Copy the game to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from that playable location. USB extended storage can run PS4 games directly, not PS5 games.
The PlayStation App cannot move a game
Use the PS5 itself. The app supports remote deletion and downloads, but Sony does not support moving or copying games in the app.

How we picked the right management method
- Direct playability: whether a PS5 game launches from the added storage without another copy operation.
- Download targeting: whether new games and updates can be directed to that storage.
- Transfer friction: how often a game must be copied or reinstalled before play.
- Installation complexity: whether the choice requires hardware fitting, formatting or console-side setup.
- Data safety: whether the method protects saved data or only stores game installations.
Use deletion and redownloading when your internet connection and play schedule make reinstalling acceptable. Use USB when you need an archive or direct PS4 playback. Use M.2 when you want an expanded PS5 library that remains playable and can receive downloads and updates in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much free space should I leave on a PS5?
Sony’s storage guidance specifies capacities for expansion devices, not a universal free-space reserve for every console. Keep enough room for the complete game or update you are installing and use the Games and Apps screen to check the actual requirement shown for that title.
Can I use the same USB extended-storage drive on two PS5 consoles?
A drive can be connected to another PS5 for access to its stored games, but each console must recognize it as compatible extended storage and you should safely remove it before switching systems. Keep ownership and disc requirements in mind when launching games on the second console.
Do PS5 game updates stay on an M.2 SSD?
Yes. Sony says PS5 games stored on a compatible M.2 SSD can be updated there. The entire game installation must remain in that one storage location rather than being divided between the SSD and console storage.
Can I copy PS5 saves to a USB stick for backup?
Sony does not support copying PS5 saved data from the console to USB. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the supported separate backup route for PS5 saves; PS4 saves have additional USB-copy support.
What happens to a disc game after I delete its installation?
The installed data is removed, but the disc remains your license check. Reinstall the game from the disc or its available download and insert that same disc whenever you launch the disc-based edition.
