Its interconnected world and flexible character builds are its strongest draws; its story is less surprising. If you enjoy learning enemy patterns, revisiting paths as you gain abilities, and shaping a character around your play style, it is a compelling fit.
What kind of game is Mandragora?
You play as an Inquisitor in Faelduum, a decaying dark-fantasy world. The game is presented as a 2D action RPG, but its appeal comes from combining two familiar structures: a connected world that opens up through exploration and backtracking, and combat shaped by Soulslike conventions.
Early guidance introduces the basics before exploration expands into blocked routes, locked doors, NPC requests, and more involved inventory and skill systems. Checkpoints, a currency used for trade and leveling, and death-and-recovery mechanics give combat encounters a deliberate, high-stakes rhythm. Steam describes a world of blades and magic, crafting, talents, and exploration; the Steam listing and PlayStation Store page provide the official feature and product descriptions.
How good are the combat and builds?
Combat rewards patience and attention to enemy patterns rather than careless aggression. The exploration loop gives those encounters context: finding a new route, reaching a checkpoint, and returning to previously inaccessible areas are part of the same progression rather than separate modes.

Build variety is a major strength. Primal Game Studio’s undated, pre-release factsheet lists six character classes, 96 passive skills, and more than 200 active-skill upgrades. It also lists more than 350 wearables, consumables, and crafting ingredients. These are developer-published counts, not independently audited totals, but they indicate the breadth of systems available for tailoring a character through skills, equipment, and crafting. The developer factsheet also describes 10 or more main quests and maps and more than 25 optional quests; those are pre-release figures.
How strong is the world and story?
In his May 5, 2025 review for MeriStation, staff writer Roberto Barragán praised the level design and the range of build options, while finding the story somewhat predictable. He described the story as well written despite that predictability. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus score or a guarantee that every player will respond the same way. Read his MeriStation review for the full critique.
How long is Mandragora?
Barragán estimated 25–30 hours for the main story and 40–50 hours for a 100% completion run. He also reported spending more than 30 hours with the game. These are a reviewer’s estimates and experience, not an official completion-time guarantee; your pace and how much optional content you pursue will affect the total.

According to the publisher’s September 4, 2025 announcement, the Asian Switch Deluxe edition includes a mini keychain, guide, original soundtrack, digital artbook, outfits, and pet followers; the Asian PS5 Deluxe edition includes a SteelBook case, guide, soundtrack, digital artbook, outfits, and pet followers. The announcement also says Standard editions have reversible covers. These details apply to the announced Asian packages, not necessarily retail editions in other territories. See the publisher’s regional edition announcement for its exact scope.
Digital Deluxe extras vary by storefront. Steam lists two pet followers, the Dark Ale quest, two transmog sets, a digital artbook, and a soundtrack alongside the game; the PlayStation Store also lists a digital Deluxe edition. Check the relevant store for the current package and price rather than assuming contents or discounts are identical across platforms.

What accessibility and convenience options are documented?
The PS5 Store listing documents offline play for one player, adjustable difficulty, basic controller remapping, tutorial reminders, pausing, manual saves, DualSense vibration, and basic subtitles. It specifies that subtitles cover the main story and main characters only. These are PS5-store-documented features; equivalent support on other platforms is not established here.
Verdict: is Mandragora worth playing?
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is worth considering if you want a substantial 2D action RPG where exploration, demanding encounters, and character-building all matter. Its connected level design and build flexibility are the clearest strengths in the available review, while a predictable plot may leave less of an impression. Choose it for the world and the systems more than for a story built around surprises.
