Marathon has earned generally favorable critic scores, with reviews praising its gunplay, atmosphere, and high-stakes extraction loop. Critics also describe a steep learning curve and punishing losses, making it a stronger fit for players who enjoy competitive, demanding multiplayer than for those seeking relaxed, guaranteed progress.
What are critics saying about Marathon?
Critics broadly like Marathon, especially its shooting, visual identity, sound design, progression, and the tension that comes from trying to extract successfully. The main reservation is that the same risk-driven design can be unforgiving: setbacks cost time and gear, and new players must learn systems before runs feel manageable. Some reviews consequently question its appeal to casual players. The positive reception is real, but it is not a universal recommendation.
Metacritic’s captured score pages show a close PC and PS5 result. These are snapshots, not fixed ratings, and their review counts and sentiment totals differ.
| Platform | Metascore | Critic reviews | Sentiment shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 82, “Generally Favorable” | 61 | 43 positive, 12 mixed, 0 negative |
| PC | 81, “Generally Favorable” | 53 | 36 positive, 10 mixed, 1 negative |
These values were reported on the respective Metacritic pages captured in 2026; scores and counts can change as more reviews appear or page data is updated. The one-point gap does not establish a meaningful quality difference between platforms. The available score data also does not establish comparative technical performance. See the PS5 critic page and PC critic page for their review context.

- CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
- AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
- FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
- MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
- SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!
Why the game divides players
Risk is the point of each run
Marathon is a PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Runs center on tactical encounters and the chance to leave with what you gathered. That creates the tension critics praise, but also makes failure sting: losing gear and having to try again is part of the loop, not an occasional interruption. Players who enjoy high-stakes decisions and gradual mastery may find that compelling; players who want each session to guarantee progress may find it frustrating.
Learning and commitment matter
Review excerpts identify onboarding and the steep demands of the game as sticking points. Its depth can reward players willing to learn the systems and return after setbacks, but it asks more of newcomers than a low-pressure shooter. One PC review excerpt characterizes it as “not a game for everyone”; that is an individual reviewer’s judgment, not a consensus finding.

Is Marathon worth playing for you?
The critic reception is most useful when read alongside the kind of multiplayer experience you want. Consider these trade-offs rather than treating the aggregate score as a prediction of whether you personally will enjoy it.
- Likely a better fit: you enjoy tactical PvP, tense extraction attempts, learning complex systems, and accepting losses as part of improving.
- Less likely to fit: you prefer relaxed sessions, forgiving progression, or a game that reliably rewards every short play session.
- Unsure: weigh your tolerance for losing gear against how much you value the gunplay, atmosphere, and strategic depth that positive reviews highlight.
Critic excerpts point to these strengths and drawbacks, but they do not establish that a particular solo or crew arrangement will suit every player. Treat the scores as a broad reception signal and the recurring criticisms as the more practical guide to fit.
Platforms, cross-play, and review freshness
Bungie announced that Marathon launched on March 5, 2026 for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save. Its launch announcement confirms availability and those features. The captured critic-score comparison covers PC and PS5; it does not provide an Xbox score comparison.
Because this is an evolving multiplayer game, launch-era reviews may not describe every later season. Bungie says seasons last about three months and can bring free gameplay updates, including gear, Runner shells, zones, and events. That is the developer’s stated cadence, not a guarantee that every season will follow an exact schedule. Its seasons overview explains the model.

How to read the review scores
The Metascores summarize critic reception at a point in time; they do not measure whether the game’s difficulty, risk, or ongoing changes match your preferences. The PC and PS5 snapshots are both generally favorable, but the aggregate can obscure the split between critics impressed by the core loop and those wary of the learning burden or narrow appeal. Read individual reviews for the reasoning behind their judgments, and check their publication dates when comparing them with the current game.
