Mario & Luigi: Brothership makes its charm easy to understand: the brothers’ lively partnership shapes an island-hopping adventure, cooperative battle moves and a steady stream of comedy. Whether its humor and pacing work for you is personal, but the game gives that warmth a clear place in how it plays.
What makes Brothership feel charming?
The appeal starts with the contrast between Mario and Luigi and the way they operate as a pair. Their relationship is not just part of the presentation: both brothers contribute to exploration and combat, so the partnership keeps showing up in what you do. Nintendo describes the game as an “island-hopping adventure,” and its official UK page sums up the mix as “Set sail with Mario and Luigi, exploring islands, enjoying action-packed encounters, and tackling turn-based combat in Mario & Luigi: Brothership on Nintendo Switch.”

The tone is another part of the effect. Nintendo Life’s review praised the game’s combat, variety, story and comedy, describing it as “packed full of top-notch combat, inventive variety, a positive and thoughtful story, and lots signature comedy from the dynamic duo themselves.” That is one critic’s response, not a guarantee that every joke or stretch of the adventure will land for every player. Nintendo Life also notes that Nintendo provided its review copy.
How the adventure plays
Brothership is a single-player action-adventure RPG for Nintendo Switch. Its world, Concordia, has been fractured into islands. Mario and Luigi sail between them to reconnect the land and investigate what caused the disruption. Shipshape Island serves as both their mobile base and their ship.

The rhythm alternates between sailing, exploring islands, taking on quests and fighting turn-based battles. This gives the adventure a sense of travel and discovery, while the battles provide a more focused change of pace.
Exploration puts both brothers to work
Bros. Moves help Mario and Luigi get past obstacles as they explore. Luigi Logic also comes into play in exploration and boss encounters, giving Luigi a distinct role beyond following Mario around. The game’s premise and mechanics make their teamwork part of the adventure rather than a separate multiplayer mode.

Combat turns teamwork into timing
Fights are turn-based, but Bros. Attacks add cooperative, timed actions to the familiar RPG structure. Their appeal comes from acting with both brothers and paying attention to the timing, rather than simply selecting a command and watching the result. If you enjoy hands-on timing in turn-based battles, this is one of the game’s clearest hooks.
Is Brothership worth playing?
It is a promising fit if you want a single-player RPG with a comic tone, island exploration and battles built around two characters working together. The case for its charm is strongest in the combination: the brothers’ dynamic carries through jokes, exploration abilities and combat, while sailing between islands gives the story room to move.

Your enjoyment will depend partly on taste. A comedy-forward adventure can feel delightful when its jokes and pacing suit you, or less engaging when they do not. Nintendo Life’s positive review offers a useful critical perspective, but it should be read as one reviewer’s assessment rather than proof of universal acclaim.
