1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRook drops you solo into a match already in progress, without a loadout—and without prepared gear at risk. Treat the run as a scavenging opportunity: assess what is available, stay alive, and look for a chance to exfil. Rook’s starting equipment and abilities have changed with patches, so check the current notes before relying on a particular kit.
What is Rook in Marathon?
Rook is a scavenger-style way to enter an ongoing match, rather than a conventional run built around a loadout you selected beforehand. Bungie describes the mode this way: “As Rook, you’ll drop into a match that’s already in progress as a solo player. You won’t be able to bring a loadout, but you also aren’t risking anything, which makes Rook an excellent option for scavengers.” (Bungie, Jan. 15, 2026.)
That trade-off is the key to playing Rook: you give up the control and preparation of bringing your own gear, but you do not put that prepared loadout at risk. Bungie removed Rook’s Runner Level requirement in Update 1.0.5, stating that Rook could be used at Runner Level 0 (Mar. 17, 2026 patch notes).
What does Rook start with?
Rook’s inventory is patch-sensitive. Bungie’s Update 1.1.9, dated Sep. 1, 2026, lists the following starting items and says the changes last until the end of Season 2:
#1 Best Overall
- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
- Compromised Sneak Pack
- Two Claymores
- Depleted Self Revive
- Signal Jammer
These are the items named in that update, not a timeless Rook kit. Check the latest Marathon patch notes for changes after the stated Season 2 period. Earlier notes described different temporary starting equipment, so do not assume that older kit still applies.
How to approach a Rook run
Use the match you enter, not a build you planned
Because you enter a match already in progress and cannot bring a loadout, make decisions around the situation and equipment you actually find. Rook is suited to opportunistic scavenging, not executing a fixed plan that depends on your usual prepared kit.

Value survival and exfil
As an editorial inference from Rook’s scavenger premise, once you have useful finds, surviving long enough to exfil is more important than treating the run like a conventional loadout push. The official material cited here does not establish a guaranteed loot route, best map, or enemy-specific tactic; conditions in an ongoing match can vary.
Factor in Recuperation—but know the dated values
Update 1.1.5 changed Rook’s Recuperation healing from 2 hp per second for 20 seconds to 3 hp per second for 30 seconds. Bungie’s developer note said Rook’s Season 2 playstyle had shifted more firmly toward scavenging and that Recuperation was intended to help the shell recover from a bad situation without relying on Patch Kits (Jul. 21, 2026 patch notes). These are the values documented in that update; consult newer notes for later changes.

Can Rook exfils earn C.A.R.R.I. commendations?
Yes. Bungie’s Update 1.1.0.2 lists 5 CyberAcme Commendations for a successful Rook exfil, plus 5 bonus commendations for exfiling with other players. Those are dated game-reward values, not a promise that the amounts remain unchanged. The earlier Update 1.0.6 also described commendations for successful Rook exfils and extra commendations for exfiling with players outside the Crew (Apr. 14, 2026 patch notes; Jun. 16, 2026 patch notes).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you customize Rook, and is there a best build?
Bungie’s Runner Shell overview says shells can be customized with cores, implants, weapons, and mods. Cores are generally designed for a particular shell and affect its abilities; implants can be used across shells and provide stats plus a random perk (Bungie’s Runner Shell overview).

That establishes a customization system, not a best Rook build. The cited official information does not compare combinations or identify best-in-slot choices. Choose based on the options available to you and the way you want to approach scavenging, rather than relying on an unsupported universal setup.
