Marathon puts you on Tau Ceti IV as a Runner: a bio-cybernetic mercenary exploring a dangerous lost colony, taking contracts, and trying to survive each deployment. You do not need to finish the original trilogy first. The current game gives newcomers a way into its story through exploration, Runner shells, and faction contracts.
What is Marathon about?
The current Marathon is a high-stakes PvEvP game set on Tau Ceti IV, an alien world tied to the franchise’s older story. Players investigate the remnants of a lost colony while pursuing contracts and navigating danger from both the environment and other players. Bungie says the narrative unfolds through repeated runs, so each deployment is part of how you encounter the setting rather than a single uninterrupted campaign. Bungie’s overview of the game and its future describes this direction.
The fiction also explains why a failed run does not end your character’s story: Runners’ consciousness can be uploaded into another shell after death. That is the game’s premise, not a claim about real-world technology. The shell you select gives you a specialized body and a distinct set of gameplay tools.
Who are the Runners?
Runners are bio-cybernetic mercenaries who deploy to Tau Ceti IV. Their work is shaped by contracts, the need to explore and extract, and the rivalries around the colony. Shells are best understood as roles you can choose and customize—not as characters with fully established, separate biographies.

What happened on Tau Ceti IV?
Tau Ceti IV is the site of a lost colony, and exploring its hostile world is the central problem facing Runners. The present game leaves players to investigate the mystery through runs and the information they uncover, rather than requiring them to arrive knowing every event from earlier games.

The franchise’s roots are in a different story: the original trilogy follows a lone security officer defending the Marathon colony ship near Tau Ceti IV. Bungie describes the older games’ larger themes as ancient alien races, the evolution of artificial intelligence and “rampancy,” and dimensional reality. Those ideas provide useful background, but the basic setup of the current game can be followed on its own. In Bungie’s retrospective on the trilogy and the current game, the studio says it wants to build stronger connections between the two over time.
How do factions fit into the story?
Factions are both progression systems and a way into the current narrative. Bungie says their agents and contracts reveal each faction’s identity, motives, and rivalries as players investigate Tau Ceti IV. Completing contracts also raises faction standing and can unlock benefits. The official Runner’s guide recommends working with the factions as you progress.

If you want to learn the lore while playing, follow the contracts, pay attention to the agents who offer them, and explore rather than treating each run as a race straight to extraction. Contracts give a practical objective; the characters and information around them provide context for who is competing over the colony and why.
What should a new player focus on during a run?
Learning the zones and extraction routes takes time. Runs are risky, and exploration matters because it can help you understand the world and meet contract objectives, while a successful extraction lets you bring useful progress back. The beginner guide also notes that salvage can be exchanged for faction upgrades or armory items. Item rarity alone does not guarantee that an item works well with your build, so consider how equipment fits together.

No. The trilogy enriches the setting with its story of the Marathon colony ship, ancient aliens, evolving AI and rampancy, and dimensional reality, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding the current game’s central premise: Runners are exploring a dangerous lost colony on Tau Ceti IV. For a newcomer, the most direct route into the current story is to follow faction contracts and investigate what the game reveals during runs.

What is planned for Marathon next?
Bungie’s future-facing announcement describes a goal of connecting PvE, PvP, and PvEvP, with more approachable ways for players to learn. It lists a permanent PvE mode, an expanded Perimeter, a new shell, and onboarding improvements as planned elements of the Symbiosis update. These are announced plans, not confirmation that each feature is live; check the game and Bungie’s latest announcements for current availability. Bungie’s development team also acknowledged the learning curve, saying, “Marathon currently asks new players to learn too much, too quickly.” The Future of Marathon presents these points as part of the studio’s stated direction.
