Bungie UI designer Elliott Gray said Marathon’s interface can change in response to player feedback without losing its distinctive visual style. In remarks reported on March 3, 2026, he specifically pointed to possible work on inventory management, navigation and information density, while insisting the UI would keep its “SAUCE.” That is not a promise that every menu or interface element will stay as it is.
What Elliott Gray said about Marathon’s UI
Gray’s comments followed criticism of Marathon’s menus and interface during the game’s Server Slam. Insider Gaming reported on March 3, 2026, that Gray responded on social media to a player-created, simplified redesign of the UI. PC Gamer also reported the exchange that day and identified Gray as a UI designer working on Marathon.
As quoted by both outlets, Gray wrote: “all jokes aside there’s plenty of work we can and will do as a team to respond to player feedback about inventory management, navigation, density of info, etc… …but don’t think for a second that we’re gonna remove the SAUCE from the UI.” Insider Gaming and PC Gamer published the remarks. The reports cite the underlying social post; the post itself is not independently verified here.
“Sauce” means visual identity, not a refusal to iterate
The distinction in Gray’s wording is between how the interface works and how it looks. Inventory handling, navigation and information density are practical usability concerns. “Sauce” signals the interface’s distinctive visual character—the style Gray said the team did not intend to discard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute#1 Best Overall
- CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
- AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
- FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
- MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
- SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!
Those goals are not mutually exclusive. A team can adjust how players move through menus or find information while retaining an interface’s overall art direction. Gray acknowledged that work remained, but the reports do not specify which individual elements would change or how those changes would be implemented.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the comments do—and don’t—tell players
- They do: show that Gray acknowledged player feedback about inventory management, navigation and information density.
- They do: express an intention to preserve the UI’s recognizable style while responding to that feedback.
- They do not: establish that the interface would remain unchanged, guarantee a particular redesign, or document what Bungie later shipped.
The reports date to March 3, 2026, and cover the Server Slam discussion. They do not establish the state of Marathon’s interface after launch or whether subsequent updates changed it. A current description of the live UI would require later official patch notes or other up-to-date evidence.
