Marathon Runner Shells Explained: Abilities, Cores, and Implants

Runner Shells are Marathon’s moddable bodies and gameplay archetypes. Here’s how cores, implants, weapons, and mods shape a build—and how Season 2 changed the system.

In Marathon, Runner Shells are moddable biosynthetic bodies built around distinct gameplay roles—not just cosmetic avatars. Bungie’s January 15, 2026 reveal described how shell abilities, shell-specific cores, cross-shell implants, weapons, and mods combine to shape a Runner’s playstyle. Season 2 later added Sentinel as a defensive shell and changed how shell stats are acquired.

What are Runner Shells in Marathon?

Bungie calls Runner Shells “the moddable biosynthetic bodies you’ll inhabit on your runs to Tau Ceti.” In the fiction, a Runner has given up their physical body and transferred their consciousness into a shell. The shell is therefore both the Runner’s in-world body and the foundation of a gameplay archetype.

Bungie’s reveal framed shells as survival tools with distinct silhouettes, abilities, and roles. Those silhouettes are intended to help players read threats and consider tactical options. The January feature highlighted intel gathering, combat disruption, and combat healing as examples of archetypes; it did not establish a permanent or exhaustive roster.

How do you customize a Runner Shell?

A shell’s playstyle comes from more than its base ability kit. Bungie described players bringing cores, implants, weapons, and mods on runs, with those choices working together to support a build. The practical distinction is that cores are generally tied to a particular shell and tend to modify abilities, while implants can be equipped across shells and add stats and perks.

Cores: shell-focused ability changes

As Bungie put it, “Cores and implants both modify your Runner shell, but they do so in different ways.” Cores are generally designed for one shell and often alter its abilities. For example, a Thief core can add a second charge to the Grapple Device. Another Thief core can make the Pickpocket Drone periodically ping nearby enemies while it is not being piloted.

Implants: stats and perks that travel between shells

Implants are usable by any Runner Shell. They grant additional stats and a random perk; Bungie said the highest-tier implants also include a fixed bonus perk. One example from the reveal was a high-tier Ping+ V5 implant that can keep pings attached to enemies briefly after line of sight is lost.

Weapons and mods complete the build

Weapons and mods are part of the loadout rather than separate from shell choice. Bungie illustrated a Vandal setup that uses the arm cannon to launch the player upward, then deals area damage on landing without fall damage. That is a developer-described build example, not a guarantee about every configuration or an independently tested performance result.

How to think about a shell build

There is no supported universal “best shell” ranking in Bungie’s reveal. A more useful comparison is whether a shell’s role and ability kit fit the job you want to do, and whether your cores, implants, weapons, and mods reinforce that plan.

  • Start with role: Decide whether you want to gather intel, disrupt enemies, heal in combat, or pursue another role offered by the available shell.
  • Match cores to the shell: Look for ability changes that strengthen the shell’s intended approach, such as a Thief core that adds a Grapple Device charge.
  • Use implants to tune the approach: Cross-shell stats and perks can add mobility, detection, or other bonuses. Bungie’s Vandal example combined cores for a triple jump with implants that increased movement speed, jump height, and heat capacity.
  • Choose supporting weapons and mods: Consider how the full loadout works together, rather than judging a shell by its archetype alone.
  • Read silhouettes as information: Bungie designed shell silhouettes to communicate threats and tactical possibilities, so the shell you encounter can inform your next move.

What changed with Season 2?

Bungie’s May 2026 Season 2 announcement introduced a “brand-new defensive shell.” In a post-launch reflection, the studio identified it as Sentinel and also described a revamped Cradle system for acquiring Runner Shell stats. That means the January 2026 reveal explains the original customization concepts, but not every later system detail.

Season 2 began June 2, 2026, according to Bungie’s announcement. Its reset was described as wiping Vault assets and personalized Armory access and returning shells to factory standards, while preserving achievements, non-seasonal Codex progression, and cosmetics. This distinction matters: a shell’s identity and cosmetic ownership are separate from a season’s loadout and progression state. Season-specific access rules and mechanics can change, so consult Bungie’s latest patch notes for the rules currently in effect.
