The best Mario Kart 8 Deluxe controller settings depend on how you steer. Choose Tilt Controls on for motion steering and Tilt Controls off for stick-and-button steering. Treat Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate as separate choices: Smart Steering helps keep a kart from leaving the course but disables the third-stage Ultra Mini-Turbo, while Auto-Accelerate simply removes the need to hold the acceleration button. These are practical starting points, not a measured fastest-setting verdict.
For a new motion player, start with Tilt Controls on, Smart Steering on and Auto-Accelerate only if holding acceleration is distracting. For a manual technique setup, turn Smart Steering off. Button players should reverse the tilt choice and can make the same independent decisions about assistance and acceleration.

What are the best Mario Kart 8 Deluxe controller settings?
There is no source-established setting that can be called the universally fastest. The correct first choice is the steering method you intend to use: Tilt Controls selects motion steering, while leaving it off keeps steering on the control stick. Smart Steering is an assist that helps prevent falls and wide departures; it is not a motion-control setting. Auto-Accelerate is another independent convenience option.
Nintendo’s support instructions show all three options separately in the vehicle-selection and pause interfaces. That separation matters because turning on tilt does not automatically turn on Smart Steering or Auto-Accelerate, and turning either assist on does not select motion steering. See Nintendo’s tilt-controls instructions for the current icon behavior.

How do I turn Tilt Controls on or off?
You can change the setting before a race or while paused. The label on the toggle is not guaranteed to be the same button for every controller, so follow the button prompt shown beside the icon rather than memorizing a universal command.
- From the main menu, enter the game mode you want and continue to the vehicle-selection screen.
- Press + or – to open the kart-stat display. During a race, press the same button to open the pause display.
- Locate the icon showing a steering wheel with the gyro/tilt symbol.
- Press the button indicated next to that icon. Nintendo says the indicated button and even the gyro icon can vary with the controller and its orientation.
- Confirm the visual state. A yellow curved arrow over the tilt icon means Tilt Controls is on, according to Nintendo Australia.
Do not confuse this icon with the map or with Smart Steering. The tilt icon chooses how steering input is read; Smart Steering supplies course-correction assistance; Auto-Accelerate controls whether you must keep holding the acceleration button.
Which settings should motion players use?
Motion players should turn Tilt Controls on, then decide whether they currently need Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate. The two motion profiles below separate learning support from manual technique so you can change one goal at a time.
Motion-first learning setup
- Tilt Controls: On.
- Smart Steering: On if falling off the course or missing turns is the immediate problem.
- Auto-Accelerate: On if holding the acceleration button makes it harder to concentrate on steering; otherwise leave it off.
This setup gives a new motion player help with course position while they learn to rotate the controller smoothly. Smart Steering can remain a temporary aid rather than a permanent requirement. Once cornering feels reliable, turn it off for access to the complete Mini-Turbo progression.
Motion-first manual setup
- Tilt Controls: On.
- Smart Steering: Off.
- Auto-Accelerate: Either setting, based on whether you want to hold acceleration manually.
With Smart Steering off, the player is responsible for keeping the kart on the track and can use the third Ultra Mini-Turbo stage. Motion steering and steering assistance are different systems: you can use gyro input without Smart Steering. Nintendo’s beginner guidance explains the trade-off directly: “The third stage Ultra Mini-Turbo can’t be used if the Smart Steering feature is on.” Read the explanation in Nintendo’s published beginner guide.
Which settings should stick-and-button players use?
Button players should leave Tilt Controls off so incidental controller movement does not become steering input. After that, choose Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate independently, just as motion players do.

Stick-and-button learning setup
- Tilt Controls: Off.
- Smart Steering: On temporarily if staying on the course is more important than advanced drift technique.
- Auto-Accelerate: Optional comfort setting.
This arrangement keeps steering on the left stick while the assist handles some course-edge mistakes. It is useful when a player is still learning track layouts, braking points or drift timing and does not want to manage every correction immediately.
Stick-and-button manual setup
- Tilt Controls: Off.
- Smart Steering: Off when you want the third Ultra Mini-Turbo stage available.
- Auto-Accelerate: On or off according to whether manually holding acceleration is important to you.
Turning off Tilt Controls does not disable Smart Steering by itself. Check the separate icon each time you configure a controller, especially after changing local players or controller orientation.
What does Smart Steering change?
Smart Steering is a course-position assist. Nintendo’s beginner material describes it as helping when a player struggles with turns, but it also states that the third-stage Ultra Mini-Turbo cannot be used while the feature is on.
Use it when the immediate cost of running wide or falling is greater than the benefit of advanced drift technique. Turn it off when you are deliberately practicing full manual lines, want every Mini-Turbo stage, or find the correction fighting your intended path. Because the setting is independent of Tilt Controls, motion and button players face the same decision.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Smart Steering should not be described as a speed boost. The available guidance establishes its course-correction role and its Ultra Mini-Turbo restriction, not a lap-time increase.
Should I enable Auto-Accelerate?
Auto-Accelerate keeps the kart accelerating without requiring continuous pressure on the acceleration button. It is an accessibility and comfort choice, not the switch for motion steering and not an established speed improvement.

Reasons to turn it on
- You are learning motion steering and holding acceleration is distracting your hands or attention.
- You want to concentrate on steering, drifting and item use rather than maintaining a button hold.
- A player has difficulty maintaining pressure on the acceleration control.
Reasons to leave it off
- You prefer direct control over when acceleration is held or released.
- You are learning a control routine that includes deliberate braking and acceleration management.
- You want fewer automatic behaviors while diagnosing whether an input is coming from the controller or from a setting.
Auto-Accelerate can be combined with either Tilt Controls state and either Smart Steering state. Nintendo’s guide describes what it does, but the supplied sources do not establish that it makes a kart faster.
What are the button controls for each controller?
The two-handed Joy-Con grip and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller use a different layout from a single sideways Joy-Con. Apply the map that matches the physical controller in your hands; do not transfer the two-handed labels to a sideways controller.

| Controller arrangement | Accelerate | Brake | Steer | Drift | Item |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two Joy-Con in a grip or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | A | B | Left stick | Hold R while steering; release R after sparks for a Mini-Turbo | L |
| Single sideways Joy-Con (right-Joy-Con example) | X | Not stated in the cited layout | Motion or the sideways control arrangement | SR | Not stated in the cited layout |
Nintendo’s support page notes that some labels differ on the left Joy-Con, so the right-Joy-Con example should not be treated as a universal sideways map. The complete two-handed mapping is documented in Nintendo’s controller-control reference.
Do I need a Joy-Con Wheel or a Pro Controller?
No. A wheel accessory is optional, and the game supports sideways Joy-Con, two Joy-Con used separately or in a grip, a sideways Joy-Con in a Joy-Con Wheel, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Choose based on the hand position and steering method you want, not on an unverified promise of faster laps.
Using a Joy-Con Wheel
The wheel is a holder for a sideways Joy-Con; the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Wheel does not include a Joy-Con. On Nintendo Switch 2, original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can pair wirelessly, but the original Joy-Con Wheel does not fit Joy-Con 2. Check the Joy-Con generation before buying or reusing a wheel. Nintendo lists the supported arrangements in its controller compatibility guidance.
Using a Pro Controller
A Pro Controller is a two-handed button option with the same documented A, B, left-stick, R and L functions listed above. It does not require Tilt Controls: leave that setting off when you want stick steering.

Why does my kart steer or accelerate by itself?
Check the software settings before assuming the controller has failed. Automatic-looking movement can come from one of three enabled features.
- Smart Steering: can correct the kart’s course when you approach an edge or struggle with a turn.
- Tilt Controls: can read an unintended controller rotation as steering.
- Auto-Accelerate: can keep the kart moving without a held acceleration button.
Pause the race or open the vehicle-stat display, inspect each icon, and change only the setting that matches the behavior you want to remove. If the kart still responds incorrectly after the relevant assist is off, continue with motion or stick calibration rather than changing every option at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are Tilt Controls not responding?
First verify that Tilt Controls is enabled and that you are checking the icon for the controller currently assigned to the player. If the icon is off, motion input will not steer the kart regardless of how the controller is moved.
- Open the vehicle-stat display with + or –, or pause during a race.
- Find the tilt icon and press the button shown beside it.
- Confirm that the yellow curved arrow appears over the icon.
- Try the controller again in a race.
- If the issue continues with an original Joy-Con, update the system and calibrate its motion sensors through System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls. Nintendo advises detaching an original Joy-Con for that procedure.
For a control-stick problem rather than a gyro problem, use the separate Calibrate Control Sticks option in the same Controllers and Sensors area. Nintendo’s troubleshooting reference is available at Nintendo Support.

Do controller settings persist in local multiplayer?
Nintendo’s Japanese support information says settings are saved after a race for player one. Settings for other local players return to their initially on state when the software closes.
For a shared system, each player should inspect the icons shown for their own controller at the start of a new session. This prevents a player from assuming that another player’s motion, Smart Steering or Auto-Accelerate choice carried over.

How should I change settings without losing track of what helped?
Start with the four profiles in the table, then change one option at a time. Keep the steering method fixed while deciding about Smart Steering, and decide about Auto-Accelerate separately; otherwise a change in hand position, course assistance and acceleration behavior can be mistaken for one setting’s effect.
- Choose motion or stick steering and set Tilt Controls accordingly.
- Pick Smart Steering based on whether course protection or full manual technique is the current priority.
- Choose Auto-Accelerate based on whether holding acceleration is comfortable and useful for your control routine.
- Run the next race with the same controller orientation and note only the behavior relevant to the setting you changed.
- Reopen the vehicle-stat display before the next session, particularly in local multiplayer, and verify the icons again.
This process does not claim a measured fastest configuration. It gives each player a clear way to match the controls to the skill they are practicing and to reverse a choice when its trade-off becomes more important.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should I remember before starting a race?
- Tilt Controls selects motion steering; its yellow curved arrow confirms that it is on.
- Smart Steering is course assistance and blocks the third Ultra Mini-Turbo stage.
- Auto-Accelerate removes the need to hold acceleration and is independent of steering style.
- Two-handed and sideways Joy-Con button labels are different.
- A Joy-Con Wheel is optional, and the original wheel does not fit Joy-Con 2.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn Tilt Controls on while a race is already running?
Yes. Press + or – to open the in-race display, locate the tilt icon and use the button prompt shown beside it. The icon’s prompt can vary with the controller and its orientation, so follow what appears on screen.
Why does the tilt icon look different on my controller?
Nintendo notes that the gyro icon and indicated toggle button can vary by controller and orientation. The yellow curved arrow is the reliable visual confirmation that Tilt Controls is enabled.
Does Mario Kart 8 Deluxe include a paper manual for these settings?
Nintendo says the game does not supply a paper or electronic manual and directs players to in-game Help. The control and calibration instructions are therefore accessed through the game interface and Nintendo Support pages.
Will a Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con fit the original Joy-Con Wheel?
No. Nintendo states that the original Joy-Con Wheel does not fit Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Nintendo Switch 2, but the wheel’s physical fit remains a separate compatibility issue.
