Mario Kart World: The Final Preview is now a pre-launch title: the game launched June 5, 2025, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Its defining change is a connected world where roads link race courses, and those connecting routes are part of some events—not just a way to reach the next track.
What is Mario Kart World?
Nintendo’s listing describes a kart racer built around a shared world, with roads passing through regions such as cities, plains, desert, and ocean. Weather can change, and the world has a day-and-night cycle. The game is available only for Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo lists a physical edition.
In Grand Prix, four races make up a cup, and the drive between courses is part of the event. That connected layout distinguishes the format from a sequence of isolated tracks: racers travel through the world as they move from one course to the next.
Which modes can you play?
Grand Prix, VS Race, and Time Trials
Grand Prix provides the linked four-race cup format. VS Race lets players race with chosen settings, while Time Trials focus on completing a course as quickly as possible. Nintendo’s launch overview also identifies Smart Steering, Auto-Accelerate, and Auto-Use Item as assistive options.

Knockout Tour
Knockout Tour is a continuous rally across the world, broken up by five checkpoints. At each checkpoint, drivers who fall below the required placement are eliminated. The format makes staying in contention across the route as important as racing well on an individual stretch.
Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 update added two routes: Propeller Rally connects Acorn Heights and Airship Fortress; Turnip Rally connects DK Pass and Shy Guy Bazaar.

How does multiplayer work?
Nintendo lists three player-count limits. The local wireless limit is the total across systems, with a maximum of two players on each Switch 2 system, according to the launch overview.
| Play option | Maximum players | Details |
|---|---|---|
| One system | 4 | Single-system play, as listed by Nintendo. |
| Local wireless | 8 | Up to 2 players per Switch 2 system. |
| Online | 24 | Online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
Nintendo lists a compatible USB camera as necessary for video features; the Switch 2 camera and membership are sold separately. Camera use is optional if you do not want those video features. Check Nintendo’s product listing for current requirements and accessory details.

What changed in version 1.8.0?
Nintendo announced free update version 1.8.0 on September 9, 2026. It added ten courses inspired by the original Super Mario Kart to VS Race and Online Play, including Choco Island, Vanilla Lake, and Ghost Valley. The same update brought the two Knockout Tour routes described above, Spectator Mode for online and LAN groups, and filters in Photo Mode. Nintendo said more Knockout Tour routes were planned for future updates, but that announcement does not establish whether additional routes have since been released. See Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 announcement for the update details.
