Mario Tennis Fever Review: A Chaotic, Excellent Multiplayer Game With a Short Campaign

Mario Tennis Fever is most appealing as a multiplayer-first Nintendo Switch 2 game: inventive Fever Rackets add chaos to solid tennis, while Adventure Mode is short.

Mario Tennis Fever is a strong pick for Nintendo Switch 2 owners who want lively local or online matches: its sharp tennis basics are enlivened by Fever Rackets, and standard-racket play offers a less chaotic alternative. The main reservation is for solo players. Reviewers describe Adventure Mode as short and basic, so this is easier to recommend for multiplayer than for a substantial campaign.

What is Mario Tennis Fever, and what makes it different?

Mario Tennis Fever is a tennis game for Nintendo Switch 2 only, according to Nintendo’s overview. Its central twist is the Fever Gauge: rallies fill the gauge, letting a player hit a Fever Shot with an equipped Fever Racket. The rackets add effects that can disrupt the court, such as freezing its surface or creating obstacles. Nintendo lists 30 Fever Rackets and 38 playable characters; Nintendo Life reports 14 courts.

The effects do not replace the tennis. Topspin, slices, lobs, and defensive maneuvers form the basic toolkit, while shot timing, placement, and positioning determine how well you handle a rally. Fever Shots also invite counterplay: The Guardian describes returning one before it bounces to send its effect back toward the player who launched it. That gives the spectacle a tactical wrinkle rather than making every point a one-way power move.

How good is the tennis?

The core appeal is the balance between recognizable tennis and unpredictable Mario-style interruptions. Nintendo Life reviewer PJ O’Reilly praised that balance and gave the game 8/10. GameSpot also awarded 8/10, citing the Fever Rackets, modes, and challenges; its review notes that standard rackets let players opt for a purer tennis experience.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Tennis™ Fever (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Swing onto the court for explosive action in the latest Mario Tennis game
  • Combine topspins, slices, and other shots with new defensive maneuvers to outpace opponents
  • Keep a rally going, build up your gauge, and unleash powerful Fever Shots
  • Equip Fever Rackets to add effects to your Fever Shots like freezing the court or shrinking opponents
  • Mix and match over 30 Fever Rackets with 38 playable characters to find your own strategy

That choice matters if you enjoy tennis mechanics but are wary of a court full of gimmicks. The Fever system adds variety and comeback opportunities, but players can choose a more conventional setup. TechRadar reports that ranked online matches include singles and doubles both with and without Fever Rackets, making the distinction useful beyond casual play.

Which modes are worth your time?

Nintendo lists a broad selection of modes, from traditional tournament play to more specialized challenges. The range gives multiplayer groups several ways to change the pace, though it should not be mistaken for a long single-player campaign.

Mario Tennis Fever Standard - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • Swing onto the court for explosive action in the latest Mario Tennis game
  • Combine topspins, slices, and other shots with new defensive maneuvers to outpace opponents
  • Keep a rally going, build up your gauge, and unleash powerful Fever Shots
  • Equip Fever Rackets to add effects to your Fever Shots like freezing the court or shrinking opponents

Mode What it offers
Adventure Mode A solo story and introduction to the game’s mechanics. Nintendo Life, The Guardian, and TechRadar criticize its limited scope; The Guardian and TechRadar each estimate roughly four hours, as reviewer assessments rather than a guaranteed completion time.
Tournament Mode Structured tournament matches.
Trial Towers A sequence of challenge-style tests.
Ring Shot A mode built around sending shots through rings.
Wonder Court, Forest Court, and Pinball Match Special court or match variations that change the conditions of play.
Racket Factory Match A match mode centered on racket effects.
Swing Mode Motion-controlled play using a gentle swing of a Joy-Con 2 controller, per Nintendo. GameSpot describes it as a separate diversion with fewer play options than the main game.

Is Mario Tennis Fever better for multiplayer or solo play?

Multiplayer: the clearest reason to buy

Nintendo says up to four players can play locally or online. The variety of Fever Rackets gives matches room for surprise, while standard rackets and ranked options without Fever effects suit players who prefer a more traditional contest. The Guardian identifies multiplayer as the game’s strongest appeal, and Nintendo Life and TechRadar likewise praise its multiplayer potential.

For online play, Nintendo requires internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also notes that additional accessories may be needed for multiplayer; check the requirements for your intended setup and region before buying controllers or other equipment.

Solo play: entertaining, but not a substantial campaign

The main caveat is Adventure Mode. Nintendo Life calls it short and basic, and TechRadar criticizes how it uses the Fever mechanics. The Guardian characterizes it as a roughly four-hour tutorial. Those are reviewers’ judgments and estimates, not an official completion-time promise. GameSpot’s reviewer reported playing roughly 14 hours across Adventure Mode and other modes, but that individual review playtime should not be read as a typical campaign length.

Who should play Mario Tennis Fever?

  • Play it if: you want a lively tennis game for local or online multiplayer, enjoy arcade effects and comeback mechanics, or like having both Fever-powered and more traditional matches.
  • Think twice if: your main reason to buy is a lengthy, story-driven solo campaign. Reviewers consistently identify Adventure Mode as limited.
  • Consider your preferred style: the basic tennis is approachable, while shot timing, placement, positioning, and racket choice leave room to improve. Fever Rackets add chaos; standard-racket play is available when you want fewer interruptions.
