There is no official tier list for MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, and the game’s two-hero Cosmic Swap system makes a hero’s value depend partly on their partner. This editorial ranking weighs versatility, range, survivability, crowd control, ease of use and team utility—not undisclosed damage numbers or win rates. It covers the 17 named playable heroes confirmed through May 18, 2026; the team also announced another update planned for later in 2026, but its release and characters are not confirmed here.
Who are the best playable heroes in MARVEL Cosmic Invasion?
The ranking below is a practical judgment about how broadly useful each hero appears from the documented combat styles and available reviewer observations. It is not a developer ranking, and it does not claim that one character wins every matchup. Enemy type, player preference and partner choice can all change who feels strongest.
The original game announcement named 15 heroes, and Tribute Games and Dotemu’s May 18, 2026 announcement added Cyclops and The Thing as DLC. Those 17 characters are the scope of this list. The same announcement described a second major update as planned for later in 2026, with a new mode and two playable characters; its eventual status and character identities are not established here. See the official Steam announcements for current roster news.
How this ranking works
Each placement balances six practical questions: how many situations a kit can handle, whether it can reach distant or airborne enemies, what defensive options it offers, how it can manage groups and bosses, how readily a new player can make use of it, and how well it contributes to swaps and assists. No comparative damage figures, win rates or balance statistics are available, so none are implied.

The developer describes a roster with different movement and combat styles: some heroes fly, some stay grounded; some attack at range, while others grab and throw; agile fighters dodge, while sturdier fighters block or parry. The official description of Cosmic Swap says: “With the Cosmic Swap tag-team system, choose two heroes for each level and switch between them instantly.” The official game site explains the mechanic. PC Gamer’s reviewer also notes that tagging out can escape a grapple or recover some health, and that tag attacks combine abilities to a limited degree during combos. Those observations make partner utility relevant, but do not establish a universal best duo.
The ranking
1. Silver Surfer
Silver Surfer takes the top spot as the clearest all-purpose pick in a roster where flight and ranged attacks are important ways to cover threats beyond ground level. The ranking rewards the ability to engage across space and support a partner without depending on a narrowly specific matchup. This placement is a criteria-based judgment, not a claim about proven damage superiority.
2. Iron Man
Iron Man’s place near the top reflects the value of an aerial, ranged combat style: it can address threats that a purely grounded fighter may need help reaching. That broad coverage makes him a natural partner for heroes focused on close-range control. The sources establish variation in flight and attack range, not a numerical comparison with other characters.
3. Storm
Storm ranks highly for the same practical reason: a flying hero can contribute against airborne enemies and move beyond the limits of a ground-only approach. Her value rises when paired with a close-range fighter who can occupy enemies while she provides coverage; that is a team-building rationale, not a documented combo ranking.

4. Nova
Nova is another strong-looking option for players who want a mobile hero with aerial reach. His placement favors access to more combat situations over specialization. A player who prefers grounded defense or grappling may get more from another hero, especially when a partner already covers the air.
5. Phoenix
Phoenix earns a high position because the roster’s flying and ranged styles offer useful coverage across enemy positions. She is a flexible complement to a grounded partner, while her ranking remains an editorial estimate rather than a measured performance result.
6. Rocket Raccoon
Rocket Raccoon’s ranged identity helps round out a team that would otherwise struggle to pressure distant enemies. Ranged support can be useful while a partner handles close combat, though a preference for direct defensive play may favor a sturdier or more agile hero.
7. Cosmic Ghost Rider
Cosmic Ghost Rider sits in the upper middle of the list as a candidate for players who want an assertive combat style without relying entirely on a narrow role. The available source material does not provide enough character-by-character comparative detail to claim that his damage, survivability or crowd control exceeds the heroes around him.

8. Beta Ray Bill
Beta Ray Bill offers a different fit from the roster’s flyers and ranged specialists. He ranks around the middle because a varied team benefits from heroes who can engage on the ground, while the sourced material does not establish a specific advantage that would justify placing him above the broadly useful ranged options.
9. Captain America
Captain America is a sensible choice for players who prefer a more deliberate, defensive approach. The developer distinguishes characters who block or parry from agile dodgers, and that defensive variety matters in a beat ’em up. His position reflects the rubric’s balance between staying power and coverage, not a claim that he is less effective in every encounter.
10. Black Panther
Black Panther is described by the developer as a precise martial artist with feline agility. That supports a nimble, close-combat identity, but not a universal tier placement. He lands in the middle because precision and agility can suit players who like evasive melee, while range and aerial reach may matter more in other situations.
11. Wolverine
Wolverine’s close-range approach can suit players who want to stay engaged rather than manage distance. That specialization is valuable when a partner covers distant or airborne threats, but it offers less obvious breadth on the criteria used here than a kit with documented ranged or flying coverage.

12. Venom
Venom represents the roster’s more forceful close-quarters side. The developer notes that some heroes grab and throw enemies, a style that can offer control in a crowd; the reviewed sources do not tie a particular comparative advantage or performance figure to Venom. His rank therefore reflects role fit, not a definitive judgment of his combat effectiveness.
13. She-Hulk
She-Hulk is a grounded option for players who favor direct engagement. A team that already has an aerial or ranged partner can use a close-range fighter to provide contrast, but this list gives broader coverage a slight edge when choosing a solo starting point.
14. Cyclops
Cyclops joined the playable roster in the first DLC, released as part of the May 18, 2026 announcement. His position here reflects the limited comparative evidence available, not a finding that the DLC character is inherently weaker than the original cast. Players who value ranged coverage may find him a better fit than this overall ordering suggests.
15. The Thing
The Thing also arrived in the first DLC. A sturdy, grounded character can be a useful counterweight to a flying or ranged partner, especially for players who favor direct combat. The supplied comparative evidence does not establish a special ranking advantage, so he falls lower on this broad-coverage list.

16. Spider-Man
Spider-Man’s agile, evasive identity can appeal to players who want movement and close-range pressure. The developer describes agility and dodging as one of the roster’s combat approaches. He ranks lower here only because this rubric favors breadth across enemy positions and the sources do not document a specific advantage that would move him higher.
17. Phyla-Vell
Phyla-Vell rounds out the list, but last place should not be mistaken for an evidence-backed claim that she is the weakest character. The available materials do not supply enough comparative kit detail to justify a confident fine-grained ordering among all 17 heroes. Her placement is the least certain in this editorial ranking; player comfort and partner synergy may make her a better choice for an individual team.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the best pair may matter more than the top-ranked hero
Cosmic Swap makes team composition part of the answer. PC Gamer’s reviewer says a tag can help a hero escape a grapple or recover some health, while tag attacks combine abilities only to a limited degree during combos. That makes a complementary pair useful: a ranged or flying character can cover space while a close-range partner handles pressure, and a more defensive hero can support a player who prefers aggressive engagement. These are role-based considerations rather than proven optimal combinations.
The developer’s stated aim was for the characters to feel like their comic-book counterparts: “One of our key mission statements in developing Marvel Cosmic Invasion is to make the characters feel like their four-colored counterparts.” PlayStation Blog, September 17, 2025. That distinct-character approach helps explain why the roster is better treated as a set of play styles than as a single fixed ladder.
Choosing a hero for your play style
- Want coverage beyond the ground? Start with a flying or ranged hero, then pair them with someone comfortable in close combat.
- Prefer staying in the action? Try a grounded melee fighter and choose a partner who can reach distant or airborne enemies.
- Want more room to recover? Experiment with tag timing; the reviewer observed that tagging out can help escape a grapple or recover some health.
- Unsure who to pick? Build a pair with contrasting roles rather than choosing two heroes for the same task.
