The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game Core Rulebook is the full rules book for playing Marvel heroes—or creating your own—in a tabletop RPG. To begin, Marvel says you need the book, three ordinary six-sided dice, and friends. If you want to try the game before buying the hardcover, Marvel offers a free quick-start guide, and Roll20 lists free basic rules alongside its paid digital rulebook bundle.

What the Core Rulebook includes

Marvel describes the game as a tabletop role-playing game built around its d616 system. Players can take the roles of Marvel superheroes or create original characters. The Core Rulebook is the complete book, covering character creation, combat, powers, and profiles of Marvel heroes and villains. Marvel describes those profiles as “dozens” but does not give a precise count in its listing.

Marvel’s official product description sums up the basic setup this way: “All you need is this book, three standard dice and some friends.” Its RPG overview specifies three six-sided dice. The book is therefore the route for a group that wants the full rules, rather than just an introductory sample.

What you need to play

  • The Core Rulebook: the full rules reference for creating characters and running play.
  • Three standard six-sided dice: Marvel identifies ordinary six-sided dice as sufficient; the cited descriptions do not make branded or custom dice a requirement.
  • A group: Marvel’s setup description calls for friends to play with.

Marvel lists Amazon, Target, Barnes & Noble, Roll20, and booksellers generally as purchase channels. That list does not establish current stock or prices, so check the live listing for availability.

Free rules, hardcover, or digital access?

Marvel free quick-start guide A free introduction; the listing does not establish that it contains the same scope as the full Core Rulebook. Groups who want to sample the game before buying the complete rules.

Roll20 digital Core Rulebook bundle A paid digital Core Rulebook bundle listed by Roll20; exact parity with the hardcover is not stated. Groups who want digital access for online play.

Marvel’s official RPG page links to the game overview and quick-start guide, while Roll20 lists its digital rules options. Check each live listing for current pricing and what is included before choosing a format.

A simple first-session setup

  1. Choose your starting rules. Use Marvel’s free quick-start guide or Roll20’s free basic rules to try an introduction, or get the Core Rulebook for the full rules.
  2. Gather three standard six-sided dice. No special branded dice are established as necessary by Marvel’s setup descriptions.
  3. Decide whether the group is playing in person or online. The hardcover is the physical-book route; Roll20 lists a digital bundle for online tabletop use.
  4. Keep the official updates handy for rule checks. Marvel publishes a rules FAQ and errata documents. The documents identified include an errata PDF dated December 20, 2024, and an FAQ dated September 18, 2023; those dates do not show whether newer materials have since appeared. Look at Marvel’s current RPG page for the latest versions.

Which version should a new group choose?

Start with the free quick-start or basic rules if the priority is trying the game without committing to the full book. Choose the hardcover when the group wants the complete rules in a physical reference. Roll20’s digital bundle is the listed alternative for online tabletop play. The available product descriptions do not establish that the free rules, digital bundle, and hardcover contain identical material, so compare the live listings if matching contents matter to your group.

For official product information, see Marvel’s RPG overview, its Core Rulebook listing, Penguin Random House’s RPG series page, and Marvel’s rules update materials. The cited product listings do not establish a current price, inventory, page count, or complete supplement catalog.
