To change a skin in Marvel Rivals, open Heroes from the main menu, select the specific hero, choose Cosmetics, open Costumes, select an owned costume and choose Equip. The game calls skins “costumes,” and each hero has its own costume list rather than a shared wardrobe. If the listing is locked, you must meet that costume’s acquisition requirement first. Color variants, called chromas, are handled through Customize on eligible costumes and are separate from switching the base costume.
How do you equip a costume in Marvel Rivals?
The complete route is Main menu → Heroes → choose a hero → Cosmetics → Costumes → select an owned costume → Equip. Use the mouse or the confirmation control shown on your screen; the exact controller button can vary by platform and client version.

- Open Heroes. From the main menu, enter the Heroes screen. Do not start in the Store if your goal is to equip something you already own.
- Choose the hero. Costume ownership is tied to the hero currently selected. A costume for one character will not appear in another character’s list.
- Open Cosmetics. Enter the hero’s cosmetic area, then select Costumes. The terminology may differ from the word “skin” used by players and guides, but Costumes is the relevant category in the interface.
- Select the costume. Highlight the outfit you want. Check that it is shown as owned or otherwise selectable, rather than merely displayed as a locked store item.
- Choose Equip. Confirm the on-screen Equip command. The hero should now use that costume wherever the game displays the currently selected appearance.
If your screen does not show Equip, do not guess at a keyboard key or console button. First check the selected hero and the costume’s ownership state, then follow the control prompt that the current client displays.
Why can’t you equip a costume?
The usual causes are selecting the wrong hero, trying to use a locked listing, or opening a preview rather than an owned item. The Store can show costumes you do not own, but viewing or previewing one does not make it equippable.

You selected the wrong hero
Return to Heroes and select the character associated with the costume. Because the list belongs to the individual hero, an outfit will be absent or unavailable when you are looking at another character’s cosmetics.
The costume is locked
A lock indicates that the outfit has not yet been acquired. Open the item’s information panel and read its stated requirement. Depending on the costume, that requirement can involve a Store purchase, a quest, a limited-time drop, or a ranked reward. The acquisition route is item-specific; there is no universal rule that every costume must be bought.

You are viewing a Store preview
The Store may let you inspect an outfit before purchase or claim. A preview is not an owned costume, so it will not provide the same Equip control. Leave the Store, open the hero’s Cosmetics → Costumes list, and check whether the item is marked as owned.
The client is showing a different control layout
Official material confirms the menu labels but does not establish one October 2026 controller-button mapping for every Windows and console configuration. Use the confirmation command printed beside the item on your screen. If no command appears after selecting an owned costume, back out to the hero list, re-enter Cosmetics, and check again rather than relying on a remembered button from another platform.
How do you change back to a hero’s default look?
Open the same hero-specific costume list and select the default costume if it appears as an owned, selectable option. Then use Equip just as you would for any other owned costume.
The exact presentation of the default option can vary by screen, so do not assume that every hero displays it in an identical position or with identical wording. If the default entry is not visible, inspect the full costume list and any navigation prompts before concluding that it has been removed.

What is the difference between Costumes and Customize?
Costumes switches the hero’s base outfit. Customize changes an additional appearance option, such as a color palette, when that costume supports one. A chroma is not a separate base costume and does not replace the Equip action for changing outfits.

Switching the base costume
Use Heroes → [hero] → Cosmetics → Costumes, select an owned outfit and choose Equip. This is the route for moving from one complete costume to another.
Applying a chroma
Open the eligible costume and look for Customize, which may appear above the normal acquire or equip control. Select the available palette and follow the confirmation prompt. Only costumes that explicitly offer a chroma can use this option; the game does not promise arbitrary recoloring for every outfit.
Reading bundle contents correctly
Some offers list the base costume, a chroma and visual effects as separate components. For example, the October 29, 2026 official patch lists the Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier bundle together with a chroma and ultimate-ability visual effects as distinct offerings. Owning or selecting one component should not be treated as automatically equipping the others; inspect each listed item in the client.

The Store is only one acquisition route. Official Season 10.5 notes dated October 9, 2026 describe costumes and related rewards tied to quests, Twitch Drops and ranked progression. Each route has its own eligibility rules and time limits, so read the item’s condition before assuming that it is currently claimable.
Store bundles
Store offers can package a base costume with other cosmetic items. An August 2026 announcement described a pick-your-own bundle format in which players selected specific included items, but that format should not be assumed for every later offer. Check the current bundle contents in the in-game Store before purchasing or claiming anything.
Quest rewards
The October 9 Season 10.5 notes list a Thor costume obtainable through a quest. Open the relevant event or quest panel, verify the objective and completion window, and claim the reward through the interface specified there. A costume appearing in patch notes does not by itself prove that the quest is still active after its stated period.
Twitch Drops
The same Season 10.5 notes identify an Angela costume as a Twitch Drop. Twitch Drop rewards normally require the account, viewing and claim conditions shown for that event. Confirm that the campaign is live and that the reward has been claimed before looking for an owned costume under the Angela hero screen.

Ranked rewards
A Gold-tier Jeff costume is also listed in those notes. Ranked rewards depend on the tier and season conditions specified by the game. Check the current ranked reward panel for the required rank and the date on which eligibility is evaluated.
Limited availability
Event and Store inventory changes over time. Treat dates in patch notes as boundaries, not as a permanent guarantee that an item will remain obtainable. If a costume is locked, its own information panel is the authoritative place to see the current requirement.
Cost and acquisition route at a glance
Marvel Rivals is listed as free to play on Steam and supports in-app purchases. “Free to play” describes access to the game, not ownership of every costume. A paid Store item can remain locked until its purchase is completed, while a quest, Drop or ranked costume may require time or a particular eligibility condition instead of a direct payment.

There is no supported claim that every costume has a cash price, and no single price should be applied to all bundles. Read the individual listing rather than assuming that a chroma, effect or base costume is included in one purchase.
What was announced for costumes on October 30, 2026?
The October 29, 2026 patch announcement gives a dated example of how a current offer can be structured. The Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier bundle is scheduled for availability from October 30 through November 27, 2026, UTC. The announcement separately identifies its chroma and ultimate-ability visual effects, so players should inspect the individual listings rather than assume that every visual component is the base costume.
This is an example of a time-limited offer, not a promise that the same bundle or dates will still be present later. If you are reading this after November 27, check the Store and the item’s availability text in the current client.
Does the method differ on Windows, PlayStation or Xbox?
The useful menu route is the same: select the hero, open Cosmetics, enter Costumes and equip an owned item. Official platform listings cover Windows, PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S releases, and the PlayStation listing identifies PS5 and DualSense support.

What is not established is a single controller-button assignment for every platform and October 2026 configuration. Instead of following a platform-specific key from an older guide, use the confirmation prompt displayed beside the selected costume. The labels Heroes, Cosmetics and Costumes are the reliable landmarks across the supported versions.

No. A controller is only an input device for navigating the menus; it does not grant a costume or unlock a locked listing. If a PS5 player needs replacement hardware, a DualSense wireless controller is the relevant accessory, but buying one cannot substitute for acquiring the digital costume in-game. Keep hardware purchases separate from the Store’s cosmetic transactions.
Can downloaded skin mods be used as an ordinary equip method?
No. A downloaded model, texture or memory modification is not the same as an official costume and should not be presented as another menu option. A NetEase notice dated October 15, 2026 warns about certain mods that alter models, textures or memory and about anti-cheat enforcement.
Use the in-game Heroes and Cosmetics menus for official appearances. Installing an unofficial modification can create account or enforcement risk and does not turn a locked costume into an owned item.
What should you check before contacting support?
Work through these checks in order so that a missing Equip command can be narrowed to an ownership or interface issue:
- Confirm that you opened Heroes from the main menu rather than a Store preview.
- Confirm that the selected hero is the one associated with the costume.
- Open Cosmetics → Costumes, not a different cosmetic category.
- Verify that the item is marked owned or otherwise selectable.
- Read the item’s acquisition text if it is locked; note any quest, drop, ranked or date requirement.
- If a chroma is what you want, look for Customize on that specific costume instead of searching for another base costume.
- Use the on-screen confirmation prompt for your current keyboard or controller.
- After equipping, revisit the hero’s portrait or appearance panel to confirm that the selected costume is reflected there.
Official patch notes have stated that portraits in Heroes are updated to reflect currently equipped costumes. That makes the portrait a useful confirmation point, although it does not replace the Equip command itself.

An August 2026 Store-format announcement used the developer’s wording “over 2 new costumes released weekly.” That is a historical promotional statement about the announced Store format, not a measured October 2026 release rate or a guarantee of future inventory. For a current answer, rely on the Store and the game’s event, quest and ranked panels.

Common mistakes that waste time
- Searching the Store for the Equip button: the Store is for inspecting, purchasing or claiming; equipping is handled from the selected hero’s Cosmetics area.
- Confusing a chroma with a costume: use Customize for a palette and Costumes for a full outfit.
- Assuming a bundle is one indivisible item: check whether the listing separates the base costume, chroma and ability effects.
- Relying on an old event date: quest, Drop and ranked availability can end, so read the current requirement text.
- Using a remembered console button: follow the prompt rendered by your current client instead of a guide made for another platform.
What does equipping a costume actually change?
Equipping changes the hero’s selected appearance. It does not change which hero you own, grant a chroma that is not listed for that costume, or satisfy an acquisition requirement. Ability visual effects may be listed as separate bundle components, so inspect the offer if you want those effects as well. The updated portrait in Heroes is a practical way to verify the selected appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do equipped costumes carry over when I switch heroes?
No single costume is a universal wardrobe item. The costume list belongs to the hero you selected, so changing heroes changes the list of appearances you can inspect and equip.

Why does my hero portrait show a different outfit?
Official patch notes say portraits in the Heroes screen reflect the hero’s currently equipped costume. Reopen that hero’s profile and check the portrait after confirming the Equip command.
Can I recolor every Marvel Rivals costume?
No. Color palettes are available only on eligible costumes. Look for a Customize option on the individual costume; its absence means that costume does not expose a chroma through the documented menu.
Are event costumes available forever after the event ends?
Not necessarily. Quest, Twitch Drop and ranked rewards can have conditions or date windows, and Store offers can rotate. Check the item’s current requirement and availability text before relying on an older announcement.
Is Marvel Rivals free, and are costumes free?

No. A controller only provides menu input. It neither grants a digital costume nor removes a lock; acquire the costume through the route shown on its item panel.
Why can I see a costume but not equip it?
You are probably viewing a locked Store preview, the wrong hero, or an item that has not been claimed. Return to that hero’s Cosmetics → Costumes list and verify the owned status.
Does owning a bundle equip its chroma and ultimate effect automatically?
Not necessarily. Official listings can identify the base costume, chroma and ultimate-ability visual effects separately. Inspect each component and use the relevant control for the item you want.
