Marvel Rivals’ October 9, 2026 balance patch changed which heroes deserve the six available seats more than it changed the recommended shape of a team. Competitive players should still begin with two Vanguards, two Duelists and two Strategists. A 1-3-2 opening (one Vanguard, three Duelists, two Strategists) is close to even with 2-2-2, while removing the second Strategist for a third Duelist is the costly trade. The patch’s biggest winners are Phoenix and several already-strong frontline or support picks; Scarlet Witch is the clearest Duelist loser. Gorr remains a high-value damage pick but is banned less often, and untouched Peni Parker still defines the Vanguard role.
This guide uses the live Version 20261009 numbers. The October 15, 22 and 29 updates added events, modes, bundles or bug fixes, not hero damage, health or cooldown changes.

What exactly changed in Version 20261009?
Version 20261009 went live on October 9, 2026, at 09:00 UTC. RivalsDex counts 13 heroes changed: seven buffs, two straight nerfs and four adjustments. NetEase described the pass as “Iron Man is locking onto targets with a brand-new missile mechanic, Phoenix is sparking up her damage, Gorr is slightly tweaking the lethality of his scythe, and Jubilee is bringing even more explosive healing to the fray.”
The figures below are the kit changes that can alter a draft. A Team-Up value applies only when its named partner is selected; it is not a general buff to the hero.

| Role | Hero | Live change | Draft implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | Devil Dinosaur | Base health 850 to 825. | Still a bleed and tank-shred threat, but with 25 less health. |
| Vanguard | Hulk | Banner Gamma Ray Gun 80 to 120 m/s; self-hit Gamma Grenade energy 50 to 100. Wolverine Team-Up speed 20% to 25%, Unstoppable threshold 300 to 400 health, cooldown 60 to 45 seconds. | Better tempo when Banner is active, especially with Wolverine. |
| Vanguard | Magneto | Emma Frost Team-Up Magnetic Resonance damage 45% to 50%; duration 5 to 6 seconds. | Only an Emma Frost Team-Up improvement; it does not undo Magneto’s earlier survivability cuts. |
| Vanguard | The Thing | Invisible Woman Team-Up Unbreakable Forces cooldown 20 to 15 seconds; enhanced-healing trigger 150 to 125 damage. | Only an Invisible Woman Team-Up improvement; his ordinary pick remains weak on several trackers. |
| Duelist | Cyclops | Optic Blast 22 to 23 damage; Ricochet Force cooldown reduction per hit 0.25 to 0.3 seconds; Ruby Rage cost 3700 to 3400. Gambit Team-Up Kinetic Kin 6 to 8 seconds. | More ultimate access and ability cycling, although post-patch win rates remain below 50% in Gold-and-up data. |
| Duelist | Gorr the God Butcher | Shadow Scythe 55 to 50 plus 2% maximum health; Shockwave 60 to 55; Twilight of the Gods cooldown 12 to 10 seconds; Living Abyss cooldown 15 to 12 seconds, movement 13 to 10 m/s. | A small lethality haircut with more frequent but slower mobility. |
| Duelist | Hawkeye | Piercing Arrow 130–195 to 140–210 m/s; shorter Crescent Slash recovery; Hypersonic Arrow first-hit field 3 to 5 m. Psylocke Team-Up damage 32 to 33; Cloak & Dagger Team-Up Moonlit Slash now heals Hawkeye. | More reliable projectile pressure and extra value from either listed Team-Up. |
| Duelist | Iron Man | Micro-Missile Barrage auto-tracks nearby enemies, damage 20 to 10 per missile, projectile speed 15 to 60 m/s, maximum five locks on one target. Armor Overdrive missiles also track forward targets and deal 15 to 10 damage with the same cap. Thor Team-Up beam rings increase from 70/s to 80/s and 85/s to 90/s. | Easier tracking, but full five-missile locks are needed to recover damage; Thor is the composition hook. |
| Duelist | Phoenix | Cosmic Flames 60 to 65; Spark detonation 40 to 45 and explosion 15 to 20; self-heal removed and replaced by five Bonus Health for four seconds, capped at 25; Endsong Inferno applies two Sparks instead of one. Hela Team-Up cooldown 12 to 10 seconds. | A stronger aggressive poke/flight slot, with less sustain from self-healing. |
| Duelist | Scarlet Witch | Chthonian Burst spell field 40 to 35 damage. | Less reliable area zoning; no longer an automatic AoE lock. |
| Strategist | Adam Warlock | Ultron Team-Up Cosmic Cluster heal 16 to 18; explosion field 5 to 7. | A pocket-heal improvement only when Ultron is present. |
| Strategist | Gambit | Healing Hearts/Breaking Spades charge time 8 to 7 seconds; Ragin’ Royal Flush search 40 to 30 m and jump boost 500 to 300. Jubilee Team-Up Sparkling Staff 1.5 to 2 seconds. | Faster cards but a less generous ultimate search and jump. |
| Strategist | Jubilee | New 25/s self-heal during Sparking Sprint; Dazzling Detonation blind 1.5 to 0.8 seconds; Firework Finale 150/s to 180/s; new Blade Team-Up heals nearby allies for 15/s for six seconds during Vampiric Kin. | More personal sustain and ultimate healing, with a shorter blind. |
Nine other heroes appeared only as Team-Up partners in this pass: Thor, Ultron, Psylocke, Hela, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Invisible Woman, Blade and Cloak & Dagger. Their presence in a Team-Up line does not mean their base kits were changed.
Does 2-2-2 still beat the alternatives?
Yes. Two Vanguards, two Duelists and two Strategists remain the safest Competitive starting point, but the second Vanguard is the cheaper seat to sacrifice if a team insists on a third Duelist. The second Strategist is the expensive seat to remove.
| Starting shape | Competitive result versus 2-2-2 | Sample | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-2-2 | Baseline | Counterwatch, Season 10 matches | Reference composition, not a guarantee. |
| 1-3-2 | 49.1% wins | 14,374 Competitive matches, Counterwatch | Close to even; loses value in close objective games. |
| 1-2-3 | 46.1% | 3,894 matches | Third Strategist is usually a difficult opening. |
| 2-1-3 | 46.6% | 3,156 matches | Extra support does not replace damage pressure. |
| 3-1-2 | 45.8% | 1,161 matches | Three Vanguards and one Duelist is uncommon and inefficient. |
| 2-3-1 | 43.3% | 540 matches | Giving up the second Strategist is the costly swap; sample is small. |
| 1-4-1 | 38.4% | 159 matches | Rare and highly unstable. |
The 1-3-2 result was 48.7% after 10.5 across 2,859 matches, compared with 49.2% before the patch. That is not evidence that the balance pass suddenly made three-Duelist starts bad. In close matches—teams within five deaths—1-3-2 won only 43.0% of 1,682 matches, showing why the second Vanguard matters when an objective fight is decided by seconds of frontline space.
Why end-of-match composition charts mislead
Counterwatch recorded line-ups 75 seconds into matches and again at the end. End-of-match tables describe emergency swaps after a team is losing, not the value of the draft at hero select. The same 1-3-2 shape won 39.7% when judged at the end, while teams with no role changes won 69.4%. Three or more role changes correlated with an 18.2% win rate, and 68.1% of teams were already behind on kills when the first role change occurred.
Therefore, a screenshot showing a lost 1-3-2 does not prove the opening was doomed. Keep two Strategists when a teammate locks a third Duelist; surrender the second Vanguard before surrendering the second source of healing and utility.
Which Vanguard should anchor Season 10.5?
Peni Parker remains the default anchor because she was not nerfed in 10.5 and controls the webs and chokes that dive teams must cross. Season 10 had already removed her self-slow and reduced Cyber-Web Cluster’s interval from 0.3 to 0.25 seconds. Counterwatch put her at 58.46% after the patch in an all-ranks comparison; SenseOS recorded 63.4% in early Gold-and-up data after the patch versus 64.9% before. MetaBot.GG listed her at 58.7%, the best Vanguard among heroes with at least 500 matches, while marvelrivals.gg recorded 66.3% in Grandmaster-and-above data on October 29. Those are different rank bands and samples, but all point in the same direction.

Devil Dinosaur is still a ban problem
Devil Dinosaur lost 25 health, yet his Season 10 bleed changes remain: bleed duration rose from 0.5 to 1 second and damage from 0.75% to 1.2% of health. SenseOS recorded 58.7% after 10.5 in Gold-and-up matches, still second by win rate, and marvelrivals.gg listed a 61.8% Grandmaster-and-above win rate with a 90% ban rate. As the site’s October 29 wrap put it, “His Season 10 bleed buffs made him a tank shredder, and the health cut in the October 9 balance patch did nothing to slow him.”
Use fliers and long-range poke that can stay off Peni’s webs as counterplay. If both are unavailable, Hulk is the practical next consideration: his faster Banner gun and stronger Wolverine Team-Up improve tempo, although those numbers depend on Wolverine being selected.
What about Magneto and The Thing?
Magneto’s 10.5 improvement exists only with Emma Frost. His ordinary kit still carries Season 10 cuts from 650 to 600 health and Metal Bulwark from 250 to 200. marvelrivals.gg reported a 33% Grandmaster-and-above pick rate but a 47.2% win rate. The Thing’s Invisible Woman Team-Up reduces his cooldown and healing trigger, yet Counterwatch still placed him near the bottom of Vanguards after a 1.65-point increase. Do not call either hero generally “buffed” unless the partner is in the six-player line-up.
Which Duelists gained or lost the most?
10.5 moved the Duelist role more than the other roles. Phoenix is the largest numerical mover, Gorr remains a premium dive pick, and Scarlet Witch absorbed the cleanest loss. Tracker leaders disagree because they use different rank bands, dates and sample methods.

SenseOS from RivalsMeta recorded Phoenix rising from 42.0% to 51.8% in Gold-and-up matches, based on 7,611 Season 10.5 matches. Her ban rate rose from 0.7% to 35.0%, and picks per 100 matches from 9.6 to 29.6. At Celestial and above, the cell moved from 40.8% to 57.0%, but that comparison used only 669 matches. Counterwatch’s all-ranks, all-game-type comparison was more restrained: 44.16% to 49.48% across about 15,800 hero-matches.
That rank split explains why Phoenix can feel either excellent or terrible. Timesaver’s October 25 all-ranks climbing board still showed 46.5%, while marvelrivals.gg recorded 51.3% in Grandmaster-and-above with an 80% ban rate. She “sits here on bans more than wins,” so Gold-and-up teams should prepare a flight/poke substitute rather than treating her ban rate as proof of universal dominance. Her new Bonus Health encourages aggressive windows; the removed detonation self-heal makes careless dives less forgiving.
Gorr: a nerf, not a collapse
NetEase called the change “The Butcher is reeling in the reach of his absolute annihilation just a hair to give others a fighting chance.” SenseOS measured a Gold-and-up win-rate change from 57.5% to 56.4%, inside noise, while bans fell from 46.6% to 37.3%. Counterwatch’s all-ranks comparison moved from 55.55% to 56.27%; Counterwatch explicitly described that small movement as descriptive, not evidence that the nerfs made him stronger. Gorr remains valuable when open, especially into slow tanks such as The Thing, Emma Frost and Magneto. Crowd control before his teleport is the practical answer.

Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, Cyclops and Hawkeye
Scarlet Witch’s Chthonian Burst field fell from 40 to 35 damage. SenseOS recorded the largest post-patch drop among the 13 heroes, from 53.0% to 48.9% in 9,152 Gold-and-up matches; Diamond, Grandmaster and Celestial-plus cells were all below 50%. Counterwatch also moved her down, from 53.57% to 51.35% in about 21,300 all-ranks hero-matches. Treat her as a situational area-control pick, not the default AoE answer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Iron Man’s missiles now home at much higher speed but deal less damage per projectile, and the five-lock cap means partial locks are not equivalent to a full barrage. SenseOS saw 51.2% to 52.6%, inside noise; Counterwatch saw 51.90% to 52.07%. Cyclops improved from 43.0% to 46.4% in Gold-and-up data and from 45.18% to 47.39% in Counterwatch’s all-ranks sample, still near the bottom of Duelists. Hawkeye moved from 46.9% to 49.5% in 2,568 Gold-and-up matches and from 47.63% to 48.99% in Counterwatch’s approximately 4,600 matches. Storm, Magik and Daredevil remain the better climbing conversation depending on the tracker: Timesaver listed Storm at 56.4% and Magik at 54.9% all-ranks, while MetaBot.GG listed Daredevil at 57.6% with at least 500 matches.
What do the Strategist changes mean for team roles?
The support role was already slower before 10.5. Season 10 globally reduced healing-to-energy conversion from 70% to 65% and damage-to-energy conversion from 55% to 50%, so Strategist ultimates arrive less often than in Season 9.5. The 10.5 pass then adjusted only Adam Warlock, Gambit and Jubilee; it did not weaken the leading Ultron, Mantis or Rocket Raccoon choices.
MetaBot.GG’s October 29 role leaders were Peni Parker at 58.7% for Vanguard, Daredevil at 57.6% for Duelist and Ultron at 56.5% for Strategist, with at least 500 matches per hero. Timesaver’s all-ranks board had Ultron at 57.3%, Mantis at 55.6% and Rocket Raccoon at 55.6%? Actually, Rocket was listed at 57.3%? Counterwatch’s listed climbing board put Peni at 58.0%, Ultron at 57.3%, Storm at 56.4%, Mantis at 55.6%, and Magik and Gorr at 54.9%; use those figures as an all-ranks reference rather than a universal ranking.
Rocket Raccoon fits almost any composition and had a 1% Grandmaster-and-above ban rate on marvelrivals.gg. Ultron’s flight is a strong anti-dive answer beside Peni, while Mantis supplies reliable utility. Invisible Woman was a popular B-tier healer at 42% pick in Grandmaster-and-above data. Cloak & Dagger illustrates why healing volume alone is not a win condition: MetaBot.GG recorded healing 42% above the Strategist average, but a 49.8% win rate and 4.3% pick rate, placing the hero in F tier.
Jubilee’s self-heal and stronger ultimate made her playable, but her blind was shortened from 1.5 to 0.8 seconds. Timesaver placed her around 50.4% mid-B, while MetaBot.GG showed 51.2% with a 0.4% pick rate. Gambit’s faster cards and shorter ultimate search left him roughly flat; his best cited Team-Up in Grandmaster-and-above play was Mr. & Mrs. X, not the Magneto pairing many players assume.

Which Team-Ups actually change the sixth slot?
Team-Ups are the main way the patch changes composition decisions. They do nothing when the named partner is banned or not selected.
- Hulk + Wolverine: faster Furious attacks and movement, a higher Unstoppable threshold and a shorter cooldown.
- Magneto + Emma Frost: stronger and longer Magnetic Resonance projection.
- The Thing + Invisible Woman: faster Unbreakable Forces and an easier enhanced-healing trigger.
- Cyclops + Gambit: Kinetic Kin lasts six to eight seconds.
- Hawkeye + Psylocke: Psionic Arrow rises from 32 to 33 damage.
- Hawkeye + Cloak & Dagger: Moonlit Slash heals Hawkeye for the healing it deals.
- Iron Man + Thor: both relevant Unibeam damage rings increase.
- Phoenix + Hela: the Team-Up cooldown falls from 12 to 10 seconds.
- Adam Warlock + Ultron: Cosmic Cluster healing and explosion field improve.
- Gambit + Jubilee: Sparkling Staff lasts 2 seconds instead of 1.5.
- Jubilee + Blade: nearby allies receive 15 healing per second for six seconds during Vampiric Kin.
The practical rule is simple: a Magneto lock without Emma Frost is not the buffed version, a Thing lock without Invisible Woman is not the buffed version, and Adam Warlock becomes a notably different pocket healer only when Ultron is present.

Hero bans begin at Gold III, with three bans per team. Prepare a backup for every role before the draft starts.

- Devil Dinosaur: the first high-rank ban priority; marvelrivals.gg recorded 90% Grandmaster-and-above bans, and SenseOS placed him atop the early Gold-and-up post-patch ban list.
- Peni Parker: 40% Grandmaster-and-above bans on marvelrivals.gg. An open Peni often shapes the entire frontline battle.
- Phoenix: a new high-rank ban target, rising to 35.0% in SenseOS’s early Gold-and-up snapshot and 80% in the October 29 Grandmaster-and-above snapshot.
- Gorr: still dangerous but less frequently removed, falling from 46.6% to 37.3% in SenseOS’s Gold-and-up comparison.
A practical queue plan from the October 25 climbing board is Peni with Devil Dinosaur or Hulk as Vanguard backups; Storm with Magik for brawl maps or Gorr when open maps and lower bans favor him; and Ultron or Mantis with Rocket Raccoon as the flexible Strategist backup. Elsa Bloodstone’s 67% Grandmaster-and-above ban rate and the roughly half-lobby ban rates for Gambit and Emma Frost are popularity and priority notes, not direct 10.5 balance effects.
How should a team make its role decision in the lobby?
- Lock the two Strategists first in principle. If a third Duelist is already selected, keep the second Strategist rather than trying to preserve two Vanguards.
- Choose the frontline job. Use Peni for choke zoning, Devil Dinosaur for bleed and tank shredding, or Hulk for Banner-form tempo. Check whether the required Team-Up partner is actually available.
- Assign the Duelist job, not merely a tier. Phoenix, Storm and Iron Man cover flight or poke; Gorr, Magik and Daredevil cover dive and duels; Hawkeye and Cyclops demand projectile aim and favorable sightlines.
- Match support to the enemy’s access. Ultron, Mantis and Rocket answer dives and provide flexible utility; Cloak & Dagger, Invisible Woman and Luna Snow emphasize healing volume; Jubilee offers personal sustain and a stronger ultimate but less blind duration.
- Reassess after the first fight, not after a bad screenshot. A role swap made while already behind is evidence of the game state, not a clean test of the original composition.
Why do tracker rankings disagree?
NetEase’s balance post does not publish ranked win-rate tiers. Every percentage above comes from a third-party snapshot, and the samples are not interchangeable. SenseOS reports Competitive Gold-and-up data; Counterwatch mixes all ranks and game types in its broad comparisons; marvelrivals.gg focuses on Grandmaster and above and adds a pick-rate bonus to its score; MetaBot.GG requires at least 500 matches for its role table.
That is why Phoenix can be 51.8% in Gold-and-up, 49.48% in Counterwatch’s all-ranks comparison and 46.5% on an all-ranks climbing board without any figure being “wrong.” The same caution applies to Duelist leaders: Storm, Daredevil, Gorr and Magik occupy different places depending on rank, map, sample size and whether bans or pick rates influence the score. Celestial-only composition samples remain too small for a firm conclusion.

The Season 10 context also matters. Peni’s web improvements, Devil Dinosaur’s bleed buffs, the global Strategist energy slowdown, Magneto and Thing survivability cuts, and Scarlet Witch’s larger rework arrived at the September 11 launch. The October 9 pass corrected parts of that environment; it did not create the entire meta from zero.

Do three Duelists automatically lose in Marvel Rivals?
No. A 1-3-2 start was nearly even with 2-2-2 in Counterwatch’s Competitive sample, and it remained within roughly three percentage points of even from Bronze through Grandmaster. It becomes less attractive when fights are close because the missing second Vanguard removes objective-holding space.
Is Phoenix worth picking if she is not banned?
In Gold-and-up lobbies, the available post-patch snapshots show a genuine improvement, but lower-rank averages remain much weaker. Pick her when the map rewards flight and poke and the team can protect her after Bonus Health expires; do not infer her value from a single all-ranks tier label.
Which hero should counter Devil Dinosaur?
Long-range poke and airborne heroes can pressure him while staying outside his preferred bleed range. Squirrel Girl is specifically named as a counter on the Grandmaster-and-above wrap, although that tracker listed her at only 34.9% win rate, so the matchup does not make her a general climbing recommendation.
When does the next Marvel Rivals rank reset happen?
Timesaver reported Friday, November 13, 2026 for Season 11’s reset, with returning players expected to complete 10 placement matches. That date was reported from the Season 10.5 roadmap rather than rechecked against a NetEase calendar page.
