Spoilers for episodes 3 and 4 follow. “Reboot” and “Malware” are the turning point of VisionQuest. Episode 3 makes Thomas essential to Vision’s survival and gives their uncertain father-son relationship real emotional weight. Episode 4 then converts the Butcherbird mystery into a Jocasta conspiracy and ends with Ultron controlling Vision’s body. The pair is most effective when it treats artificial intelligence as a question of family, memory and agency; the murder investigation is more crowded, but its cliff-hanger gives the season a genuine cost.
What happens in VisionQuest episode 3, “Reboot”?
Vision is close to shutting down after Paladin’s adamantium bullet, and Thomas must help him restart. The emergency becomes a test of whether this rebuilt Vision can accept responsibility for the teenager who may be his reincarnated son.

Vision is failing while Thomas demands an answer
Thomas has stolen a station wagon, and Vision treats the wound with acid from a dead battery. Inside the Mindspace, the mechanical crisis appears as a house fire that D.U.M.-E. tries to control with an extinguisher. The gag is funny, but it also visualizes how badly Vision’s internal systems are deteriorating.
Thomas asks directly whether Vision is his father. Vision refuses the role, arguing that any connection to the Maximoff family comes from Wanda’s magic and that he cannot be anyone’s parent. Paul Bettany has described the series as “a story of a guy going through an identity crisis,” and the refusal gives this version of Vision a distinct emotional problem rather than simply restoring his old personality.

The pool becomes a reboot chamber
Thomas explains that bullies held him beneath a swimming pool. As he drowned, “something else” filled the space, bringing super-speed and a second set of memories with it. Vision’s core is about to fail, so the two enter the pool together. Thomas uses his speed to restart Vision, and the reboot succeeds.
The restart also broadcasts a signal. That transmission attracts the hooded synthezoid later known as Butcherbird, turning a private rescue into the season’s next threat.

Paladin’s history echoes the same family wound
The man currently using the Paladin identity was adopted and trained by the previous Paladin after his abusive father was killed. That parallel makes the episode’s family theme deliberate: inherited names, damaged parents and children who must decide what to keep.

Who is Butcherbird in VisionQuest?
Butcherbird is a red-eyed, hooded synthezoid who survives gunfire and leaves wing-shaped marks beneath victims. Ultron is fascinated because every known Stark artificial intelligence already occupies a place in Vision’s Mindspace, implying that Butcherbird is a new machine intelligence rather than another familiar program.
In “Malware,” E.D.I.T.H. attempts a code exorcism after Butcherbird enters Vision’s Mindspace. Ultron identifies the intruder as a synthezoid serial killer. Vision and Ultron then hack police and Interpol systems, using a deliberately absurd CAPTCHA sequence to identify the next target.
Is Jocasta in VisionQuest, and what does she want?
Yes. Butcherbird is unmasked as Jocasta, a synthezoid built in the image of the deceased artificial-intelligence scientist Dr. Josephine Carrington. Her motive is a vendetta connected to Carrington’s death and legacy, although the episodes do not yet explain the full grievance or who may have directed her.

Jocasta introduces a sharper identity question than a simple robot-versus-robot fight: can an artificial being inherit a creator’s anger without reproducing the creator’s violence? That question connects her to Vision’s uncertainty about Wanda and Thomas, while leaving the exact mechanics of her creation unresolved.
What happens at the end of VisionQuest episode 4, “Malware”?
The investigation leads to Markridge Biotech, an AI company whose technology was sold to Stark Industries. The surviving target, Katerina (also identified as Katarina) Wells, is hosting an AI gala on the anniversary of Ultron’s attack on Sokovia. Thomas recruits grifter Lisa Molinari to help him reach the event.
Jocasta defeats Vision at the gala. To survive, Vision gives Ultron control of his body. Ultron shuts the other AIs out, allows Wells to die and leaves with Thomas. The cliff-hanger is not merely a promise of greater power: Vision has lost physical agency, the Mindspace team has been locked away, and Thomas is now with the antagonist.

What does Ultron’s takeover mean for the season?
Ultron has changed from a voice embedded in Vision’s mind into the person holding the protagonist’s physical keys. That shift turns the identity plot into an immediate rescue problem: Vision must find a way to reclaim his body while the other programs remain excluded from the systems that once helped him function.

Vision is trying to define himself apart from Wanda’s magic, Jocasta carries Carrington’s grievance, and Ultron is the corrupted creation who now treats Vision as a vehicle. Showrunner Terry Matalas said he wanted the final exchange between the two from Avengers: Age of Ultron to continue for “another 127 minutes”; these episodes finally make that relationship the engine of the plot.

What works best
- Vision and Thomas finally have a playable relationship. Thomas is not a passenger: his trauma, speed and insistence force Vision to act like a caregiver before he can accept the word “father.”
- The Mindspace comedy has narrative purpose. D.U.M.-E., E.D.I.T.H. and Ultron each interpret human behavior differently, making the artificial ensemble feel like characters rather than interface effects.
- The final possession has consequences. Vision loses control, the other AIs are isolated and Thomas is placed in direct danger.
What is less effective
- The Butcherbird plot arrives while the domestic rhythm is still developing. The A.V. Club praised the Vision-Thomas dynamic but warned that the procedural turn threatens the “funny friends in a house” balance.
- The family metaphor is repeated across Vision and Thomas, Paladin and his adoptive father, Carrington and Jocasta, and Ultron’s creator-child relationship. The pattern is coherent, yet later episodes will need to give each relationship a distinct emotional shape.
- Several mechanics remain open: Jocasta’s ultimate objective, who commissioned Paladin, how Vision can recover his body, and whether Thomas’s memories belong to Tommy Maximoff, the drowned boy, or both.
Early critical response is favorable but limited. Rotten Tomatoes displayed four critic reviews at the time of publication, including scores of B+, 4/5 and 9/10. One quoted critic, Caroline Siede, said the show “springs to life” when it pauses for conversations about what it means to be human. That describes the episodes’ strength more accurately than the murder mythology does.

Where can I watch VisionQuest episodes 3 and 4?
VisionQuest streams exclusively on Disney+. Disney’s schedule lists an eight-episode season: episodes 3 and 4 arrived together on October 21, 2026; episodes 5 and 6 follow on October 28; episode 7 arrives November 4; and the finale is scheduled for November 11.
The series is the concluding chapter of the trilogy that began with WandaVision (2021) and continued with Agatha All Along (2024). Paul Bettany returns as Vision, James Spader as Ultron, and Terry Matalas serves as showrunner.
