Mass Effect: Andromeda has six recruitable single-player squadmates: Cora Harper, Liam Kosta, Peebee, Nakmor Drack, Vetra Nyx and Jaal Ama Darav. This ranking puts character arc and contribution to the exploration story first, crew dialogue second, and combat flexibility third. It is an editorial order, not an objective measure of who is strongest; Ryder’s build, difficulty and party composition can change the combat calculus.
How this ranking weighs the squad
Andromeda centers on Ryder’s Pathfinder mission to find new worlds and alien races, with a trained squad along for the effort, as EA’s game announcement describes. The companions matter both as combat partners and as people whose concerns shape the crew’s experience of that mission.

- Character arc and thematic contribution: How much a companion’s personal stakes connect to exploration, first contact and settlement.
- Crew interaction: The distinctiveness of their conversations and their contribution to the Tempest ensemble. BioWare’s May 9, 2017 patch notes document a change to how available character dialogue was presented; that interface history is a reminder that conversations are part of the crew experience, not just optional flavor.
- Combat role and flexibility: Their broad role gives context, but the game’s combat mixes weapons, biotics, movement and destructible environments. The best fit depends on Ryder’s abilities and the way you like to fight.
The broad role descriptions below are summarized in the community-edited character overview. The placements and judgments are editorial, not a poll or a claim of consensus.

Jaal Ama Darav
Jaal has the strongest built-in connection to the central premise: he is an angaran resistance fighter joining a human-led Pathfinder effort in a galaxy where his people are already struggling to survive. His perspective makes exploration more than a sequence of new locations; it brings the consequences of contact and settlement into the crew’s personal relationships.

SaleMass Effect Andromeda (Xbox One)- Mass Effect: Andromeda takes players to the Andromeda galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, players will lead our fight for a new home in hostile territory as the Pathfinder - a leader of military-trained explorers. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival.
- Play as the Pathfinder - a leader of a squad of military-trained explorers - with deep progression and customisation systems. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda Galaxy.
- As you unfold the mysteries of the Andromeda Galaxy and the hope for humanity lies on your shoulders - You must ask yourself... How far will you go?
That gives him an unusually clear narrative purpose, while his place on the Tempest also offers a window into how the angarans see the newcomers. His broad combat role is that of a resistance fighter, but he lands first here for the way his identity and stakes intersect with the story’s biggest questions.

Vetra Nyx
Vetra’s practical, protective outlook makes her a natural fit for a mission that repeatedly asks a small crew to improvise in uncertain territory. As a turian mercenary specializing in shielding and protection, her combat identity also supports that grounded, keep-the-team-going quality.
Her appeal comes from the balance between capability and personal loyalty: she feels like someone who has learned to survive by taking responsibility for the people around her. That adds a valuable perspective to a crew otherwise pulled toward idealism, crisis response or scientific curiosity.

-
Nakmor Drack
Drack brings the weight of krogan history and experience to a story about whether a new home can be built. A veteran warrior specializing in close combat, he offers an unmistakable frontline presence, but his narrative value is not limited to fighting: his long view gives the settlement mission a different sense of time and consequence.

He ranks below Vetra because his broad function is more familiar, but his veteran perspective makes him an important counterpoint to the Pathfinder’s optimism.
-
Peebee
Peebee’s asari gunslinger identity and biotic destabilization capabilities suggest a companion who can disrupt a fight rather than simply hold a line. Her restless curiosity also suits the unknowns of Andromeda, even when her approach feels less conventional than the Pathfinder’s carefully organized mission.

She earns a high place for injecting energy and unpredictability into both combat and crew life. Her personal priorities can feel more self-directed than the companions ranked above her, which makes her entertaining but somewhat less central to the settlement story’s emotional spine.
-
Cora Harper
Cora is a human biotic specialist with commando training, a combination that makes her a clear and dependable combat option. Her background also gives her an invested relationship with the Pathfinder role and the expectations attached to it.

She remains a useful contrast between disciplined preparation and Ryder’s need to define the job on the fly.

Liam Kosta
Liam is a human security expert with crisis-response specialization, making him an obvious fit for a mission where plans routinely meet unexpected problems. He brings urgency and a civilian-minded desire to help, which can make the crew feel less like a military expedition and more like people trying to make a society work.
He ranks sixth not because his role is irrelevant, but because his impulsive crisis-first instincts can be a less natural match for the long, patient demands of exploration and settlement. Players who value energy and a less formal outlook may connect with him more strongly than this order suggests.
Who should you take into combat?
There is no universal best squad. These companions’ broad specialties point to different approaches, but they do not establish a fixed effectiveness ranking. Ryder’s build, chosen difficulty, the other squadmate and personal preference all influence what feels useful.
| Squadmate | Broad role | What that role suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Cora Harper | Human biotic specialist with commando training | Biotic capabilities paired with a trained combat background |
| Liam Kosta | Human security expert specializing in crisis response | A security-oriented, crisis-response identity |
| Peebee | Asari gunslinger with biotic destabilization capabilities | Gunplay and biotic disruption |
| Nakmor Drack | Krogan veteran specializing in close combat | A close-range, frontline approach |
| Vetra Nyx | Turian mercenary specializing in shielding and protection | A protective role built around shielding |
| Jaal Ama Darav | Angaran resistance fighter | A resistance-fighter role; the broad summary does not specify a narrower specialty |
EA’s combat framing emphasizes weapons, biotics, movement and destructible environments. Use the role descriptions as a starting point for experimenting with a party, not as proof that one companion will outperform another in every encounter.
Who are the squad members in Mass Effect: Andromeda?
