Mass Effect 3’s ending is decided by the Crucible, but your earlier choices mostly determine how much military strength you bring to that moment. In Legendary Edition, 7,400 Effective Military Strength (EMS) unlocks every finale and the famous Shepard-breathes scene on Destroy; 6,200 unlocks Synthesis. At very low strength, the Mass Effect 2 Collector Base can leave you with only Destroy or only Control. The final choice is always consequential: Destroy eliminates all synthetic life, Control turns Shepard into the Reapers’ governing intelligence, Synthesis rewrites organic and synthetic life together, and Refusal lets the cycle continue. There is no officially declared “best” or canon color.
What actually determines Mass Effect 3’s ending?
After Shepard reaches the Citadel, confronts the Illusive Man and Anderson, and meets the child-shaped Catalyst, the Crucible offers the final decision. The game’s ending tree has four core outcomes in Legendary Edition and the Extended Cut: Destroy, Control, Synthesis and Refusal. IGN counts nine permutations because Destroy has four versions, Control has three, Synthesis has one and Refusal is hidden; other guides count the same tree as five outcomes by grouping the strength-based variations.

The important distinction is between a direct gate and indirect influence. Almost every trilogy decision creates or removes War Assets, but does not select a beam for you. The one direct exception is the Collector Base at very low EMS. Your military total, not a morality meter, is the main switch.
Effective Military Strength (EMS)
Total Military Strength (TMS) is the sum of fleets, people, technology and resources listed at the Normandy War Terminal. The original 2012 release multiplied TMS by Galactic Readiness, which started at 50 percent and could be raised through multiplayer and companion applications. Legendary Edition removed Readiness: the number shown on the War Terminal is the number used.

Check the War Terminal in the Normandy War Room before the point of no return. Available colors are locked during Admiral Hackett’s conversation immediately before you launch Priority: Cerberus Headquarters and proceed to Cronos Station. Assets earned after that conversation do not alter the available colors. If you cross a threshold later, restart from Priority: Cerberus Headquarters, not from the Catalyst scene.
Legendary Edition thresholds
| EMS | Destroy | Control | Synthesis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3,199 | Only if the Collector Base was destroyed; catastrophic damage, including the death of artificial intelligences and everyone on Earth in the worst branch. | Only if the Collector Base was spared; catastrophic damage. | Locked. |
| 3,200–4,199 | Large-scale damage; synthetic life dies; Joker and two favored squadmates escape, without EDI. | Large-scale damage; Joker and two favored squadmates escape. | Locked. |

| 6,200–7,399 | No relay-scale damage; Joker, EDI and a favored squadmate escape. | High-EMS Control epilogue. | Unlocked; no negative galaxy-damage variation. |
| 7,400+ | No relay-scale damage, synthetic life dies, and Shepard can be shown breathing in the rubble. | High-EMS Control epilogue; Shepard’s body still dies. | Unlocked. |
IGN’s current Legendary Edition chart uses 7,400 as the Shepard-survival line, also cited by Screen Rant. RPG Site suggests 7,800 as a conservative buffer if final-mission events go badly; that is not a separate official threshold.

At 3,199 EMS or less in Legendary Edition, destroying the Collector Base in Mass Effect 2 leaves Destroy as the only color, while sparing it leaves Control as the only color. A fresh game started without an imported Mass Effect 2 state defaults to the destroyed-Base result. Above that low band, both colors appear; between 3,200 and 5,199 the Base can still slightly bias the amount of relay and Earth damage, but it no longer removes an option.
Morality and Anderson’s fate
Paragon- or Renegade-dominant morality changes the voice and wording of the Control narration, not the beam itself. A mixed Shepard receives a small variation. In Legendary Edition, the Illusive Man’s execution of Anderson does not change whether Shepard survives Destroy. That Anderson fork affects the original releases, not the modern remaster.

How do I get every ending and the Shepard-survives scene?
For a Legendary Edition playthrough, target at least 7,400 EMS before the Hackett lock. A full ME1-to-ME2-to-ME3 import is the practical route because surviving characters, completed missions and political settlements become War Assets.
- Import your saves. Preserve living squadmates and completed loyalty outcomes rather than starting with a blank world state.
- Finish optional missions and scan planets. Leviathan, Omega, Citadel, From Ashes, fleet assignments and resource scans fill the gap between the two-color range and the Synthesis threshold.
- Keep the Suicide Mission survivors alive. Install the Silaris Armor, Thanix Cannon and Cyclonic Shields on the Normandy, assign loyal specialists, and send the correct escort. Dead characters cannot return as ME3 assets or help settle Rannoch.
- Resolve Rannoch for peace when possible. Peace combines Geth and quarian fleets, the largest single ethical War Asset increase in the trilogy.
- Check the War Terminal before Cronos Station. If the number is below the outcome you want, reload earlier missions; late assets cannot change the lock.
RPG Site notes that 7,800 gives extra headroom, but 7,400 is the published Legendary Edition chart line. Turning Autosave off after the Catalyst scene lets you replay the final choice without replaying the entire approach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich earlier choices provide the most War Assets?
These decisions do not select Destroy, Control or Synthesis directly. They determine who is alive, which fleets trust Shepard, and how many assets appear on the War Terminal.
Mass Effect 1 choices
- Wrex on Virmire: Wrex needs eight Charm points or the completed Family Armor assignment to stand down. If he lives, he leads the krogan in ME3 and cannot be persuaded into a false genophage cure as easily as Wreav.
- Rachni Queen: Destroying the Queen or the later Breeder grants Aralakh Company (25 points). Sparing the true Queen trades that 25 for 100 Rachni Workers who remain reliable. Sparing the Breeder initially grants 100 but loses those points when it betrays the crew.
- Council and human representative: Saving the Council gives humanity a Council seat; sacrificing it makes other species resent humanity. Anderson or Udina later occupies the human seat, with limited practical difference to the final war total.
- Ashley or Kaidan: The survivor becomes a later squadmate, romance option and potential asset.
- Feros, Balak and Saren persuasion: These produce smaller reputation and asset ripples. Saren’s final persuasion check requires 12 Charm or Intimidate, or nine if the Virmire investigation persuasion line was used.
Mass Effect 2 choices
- Suicide Mission preparation: Missing Normandy upgrades can kill one squadmate per failure. Do not use Tali or Legion as the specialist leader, and send a loyal escort.
- Legion and Tali: Activate Legion, keep Legion loyal, preserve Tali, and complete the Geth Fighter Squadrons mission if you want the Rannoch peace route.
- Maelon’s data: Keeping it improves Eve’s survival odds, which affects whether a Wreav-led genophage deception is possible.
- Grunt, Miranda, Jack, Samara, Thane and Zaeed: Loyalty and survival preserve later cameos and assets, even when a guide does not assign a single published point value to each.
If everyone dies in the Suicide Mission, Shepard dies in Mass Effect 2 and cannot be imported into ME3. That is a failed trilogy state, not a special Mass Effect 3 ending.

Mass Effect 3 choices
- Genophage on Tuchanka: Wrex-led negotiations prevent a peaceful sabotage. Curing it with Mordin wins krogan support but costs the salarian Dalatrass’s support. With Wreav leading and Eve dead, Shepard can persuade Mordin to fake the cure, retaining both krogan and salarian assets while Mordin survives as a Crucible scientist.
- Rannoch: Uploading the Reaper code saves the Geth while the quarian fleet dies; stopping the upload saves the migrant fleet while the Geth die. Peace preserves both fleets, although Legion dies completing the upload. A hidden peace score needs at least five points: acquitting Tali (two), destroying the Heretics (two), using Charm or Intimidate during the ship argument (one), completing Admiral Koris’s mission (one), and saving Koris (one). At Rannoch, at least 75 percent Paragon or Renegade reputation unlocks the fleet-rally or fleet-warning dialogue.
- Rachni on Utukku: The Queen/Breeder result follows the ME1 asset trade described above; Grunt survives only if his ME2 loyalty was completed.
- Side content: Leviathan, Omega, Citadel, From Ashes, scanning and uncompleted assignments provide the final increments toward 6,200 or 7,400.
What happens in each Mass Effect 3 finale?
| Ending | Shepard | Geth and EDI | Conflict result | Narrator and tone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Destroy (red) | Usually dies; at 7,400+ LE EMS, a breath can be shown in the rubble. | All synthetic life, including Reapers, Geth and EDI, is destroyed. | Reapers are permanently eliminated; organic–synthetic coexistence is sacrificed. | Admiral Hackett; grim at low strength, hopeful at high strength. |
| Control (blue) | Shepard’s body dissolves; memories and thoughts become the Reapers’ governing intelligence. | Geth and EDI survive. | The Reapers withdraw and help rebuild under Shepard-AI direction. | Shepard-AI; guardian language for Paragon, militarized language for Renegade. |
| Synthesis (green) | Shepard dies in the Crucible beam. | Organics and synthetics are fused into a new framework; EDI lives. | The harvest ends because every form of life is hybridized. | EDI; optimistic, but built on imposed transformation. |
| Refusal | Shepard and the current cycle are lost. | The Reapers complete the harvest. | The cycle continues; Liara’s beacon teaches the next civilization. | Liara’s next-cycle message and a different Stargazer scene. |
How do I physically choose Destroy?
Take the right-hand path after the Catalyst’s explanation and shoot the Power Conduit four times with Shepard’s pistol. The Crucible wave destroys the Reapers and every synthetic being it reaches. Shepard’s cybernetics are also vulnerable, explaining the normal death and the high-EMS breathing stinger. In low-EMS branches, the blast can kill everyone on Earth and leave the Normandy doors closed; at stronger levels, Joker and favored squadmates escape while the relays remain usable.
How do I physically choose Control?
Take the left-hand path and approach the two electric handles. The scene triggers as Shepard gets close. The organic body is dissolved, but the new Shepard-AI controls the Reapers. Paragon-dominant narration presents an eternal guardian protecting the many; Renegade-dominant narration presents an overwhelming army that destroys threats. The Illusive Man’s goal is achieved in form, but without his indoctrinated human mind.
How do I physically choose Synthesis?
Walk into the central white beam between the red and blue paths. Synthesis requires 6,200 EMS in Legendary Edition, compared with 2,800 in the original Extended Cut. Shepard adds their energy to the Crucible, causing a galaxy-wide reaction that gives organic and synthetic life a shared “new DNA.” Reapers become rebuilding allies, EDI narrates the aftermath, and Shepard dies.
What is the Refusal ending?
Refusal exists only in Extended Cut, Legendary Edition and the Wii U version. After the Catalyst lists its options, choose “I reject these choices!” and then “You are wrong,” or shoot the Catalyst. The Catalyst answers that the cycle continues, the Reapers harvest the current galaxy, and Liara’s time capsule survives for a future civilization. RPG Site describes this as technically a game over rather than a victorious ending, and its result is unchanged by EMS.

Why did the endings look so similar?
The 2012 release showed three final verbs with limited immediate variation, so players felt years of decisions had collapsed into colored beams. Extended Cut added Refusal, longer epilogues and clearer differences in relay damage, Normandy survival, narrators and memorial scenes, but it did not create a unique finale for every romance, species war or squadmate. Those choices feed the military total and epilogue slides; the last physical action remains one of three Crucible paths or refusal.
The game also communicates a philosophical argument through the Catalyst. It claims that created beings inevitably rebel against creators, that the Reapers harvest advanced civilizations to preserve younger ones, and that the Crucible can either destroy synthetics, control Reapers or combine organic and synthetic life. The dialogue is game text rather than an official BioWare statement, and the Catalyst’s “ideal solution” is intentionally open to challenge: Shepard may already have proved coexistence possible by brokering peace between Geth and quarians.
Is there a canon or objectively best ending?
No official BioWare or EA source identified a canon Mass Effect 3 color. Destroy is the popular completionist choice because it ends the Reapers and can leave Shepard alive, but it also kills EDI and any surviving Geth. Control preserves synthetic allies but turns Shepard into the kind of centralized power the Illusive Man wanted. Synthesis ends the organic–synthetic war by changing every person without consent. Refusal protects the right to choose only by accepting the death of the current cycle.
Older teaser analysis often inferred Destroy from the absence of green synthesis effects and the presence of Reaper and Geth wreckage. A 2026 report about a cancelled, reportedly 600-years-later project claimed that all three outcomes would be aged into the setting without selecting one; that report was not a shipped game or a studio declaration. Treat trailer readings and leaks as speculation, not canon.

Which version’s numbers should I follow?
| Version | Low-EMS single option | Synthesis unlock | Shepard-lives Destroy | Readiness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary Edition | 0–3,199 | 6,200 EMS | 7,400+ EMS | Removed; War Terminal number is final. |
| Original with Extended Cut | 0–1,599 | 2,800 EMS | 3,100+ EMS if Anderson was not executed; higher value was uncertain if he was. | Used TMS × Readiness. |
| Original 1.00 | 0–1,749 | 2,800 EMS | 4,000+ EMS if Anderson was not executed; 5,000+ if he was. | Used TMS × Readiness. |
Do not combine the old 1,750, 2,800 or 3,100 figures with a Legendary Edition run. The remaster’s raw totals are scaled differently because it removed Galactic Readiness while preserving the intended effort curve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the ending after finishing Mass Effect 3?
Yes. Disable Autosave after the Catalyst conversation, then reload the final-choice save to view another branch. If your desired color was unavailable, reload from before the Hackett conversation preceding Cronos Station because later War Assets cannot change the lock.
Does saving the Collector Base make Control the canon choice?
No. Sparing or destroying the Base only gates the sole color at very low EMS. Once Legendary Edition EMS reaches 3,200, both Destroy and Control are available regardless of that Mass Effect 2 decision.
Will the Geth survive if I choose Control or Synthesis?
Yes. Control leaves Geth and EDI alive under Shepard-AI oversight, while Synthesis incorporates them into the shared organic–synthetic framework. Destroy kills them even if you achieved peace on Rannoch.
Why is Shepard partly synthetic in the Destroy explanation?
The Catalyst says the Crucible blast targets synthetics and that Shepard contains extensive cybernetics. That is why Destroy normally kills Shepard but can leave a high-EMS survivor breathing among the rubble.
