Play Mass Effect, then Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3, carrying Shepard’s choices forward between games. For the simplest starting point, use Mass Effect Legendary Edition: it bundles the three single-player trilogy games and more than 40 DLC packs. The order below places the story expansions where they fit most naturally, while distinguishing practical recommendations from an official, fixed chronology. Mass Effect: Andromeda is a separate, optional Pathfinder adventure—not a fourth Shepard game.

The order in this table is a spoiler-conscious play recommendation, not a developer-issued timeline for every mission. In particular, the timing of several DLC packs is flexible.

Play the Shepard trilogy in release-story order: Mass Effect → Mass Effect 2 → Mass Effect 3. Each game continues Shepard’s story, and carrying choices forward gives the trilogy its intended continuity. Decisions made in the first game can alter conversations, available characters, missions and references in the sequels, so starting at the beginning gives you the fullest context.
After finishing ME1, import its save into ME2 when the game offers that option. Do the same from ME2 into ME3. A fresh start is still possible if you change platform or do not have an old save, but it will not carry over the same history. On Legendary Edition, the trilogy is presented as one collection, which makes keeping the sequence and your save files together simpler.

EA describes Legendary Edition as a collection of those three connected games. It does not include Andromeda, which follows a different protagonist, the Pathfinder, on a separate adventure. You can play Andromeda after the trilogy if you want more of the setting, but it is not a required chapter in Shepard’s arc.
There is no need to rearrange the games to chase a single franchise-wide calendar chronology. The practical question is where to fit each expansion within its own game, and those placements are not all fixed by official instructions. Treat the itinerary below as a way to preserve momentum and minimize spoilers, not as a claim that every mission has one mandatory date.

For a straightforward trilogy playthrough, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the convenient option. EA says it contains the three single-player base games and over 40 DLC packs, and lists it for PS4, Xbox One, and PC through the EA app or Steam. That gives a new player one purchase and one launcher instead of tracking down separate original-game releases and add-ons.
The stated pack count is EA’s description of the collection, not proof that every historical add-on is included. The collection is extensive, but “over 40” should not be read as “every item ever released.” Check the edition page for the platform you intend to use, especially if you are comparing a digital listing with an older physical copy.
One notable exception is Pinnacle Station: an identified EA community manager says it is not in Legendary Edition. EA’s separate classic-game help listing treats it as DLC for the original Mass Effect. You do not need to buy an older edition to follow this itinerary; simply omit that optional pack if you are playing the remaster.
For older releases, check the specific edition and platform before buying. EA’s help information lists DLC for the classic games, while the current EA store listing for Mass Effect 2 (2010 Edition) describes previously released DLC as included. That store listing displays a 2023 date; it is not the original release date of Mass Effect 2, and it should not be treated as proof that every old disc or platform edition includes every add-on.

Platform checklist
- PS4: Listed by EA as a supported Legendary Edition platform. If purchasing a physical copy, confirm that the listing actually says physical media rather than assuming a platform listing describes the format.
- Xbox One: Also listed as supported. Verify which account or storefront supplies the downloadable components when comparing editions.
- PC: EA lists the EA app and Steam. Confirm the storefront, language and included content in the exact product description.
Those platform facts describe support, not current stock, condition or price. Availability can change, and a marketplace listing may not contain the same content as the publisher’s current digital edition.
How should I play the original Mass Effect and its DLC?
Play the main campaign, and fit Bring Down the Sky in before you finish the game and move on to ME2. Its precise position within the campaign is flexible; there is no need to pause the main story at a particular mandatory point. You can complete it when you are ready for an additional assignment, then return to the Normandy and continue the main plot.
Bring Down the Sky
This is the story expansion to include in a normal first-game itinerary. The recommended placement is simply sometime during the campaign, before its conclusion. Putting it in the middle or later portion of ME1 lets it function as a substantial side operation without interrupting the opening tutorial flow. EA’s support listing confirms the DLC, but does not prescribe a required mission sequence.
If you are trying to avoid spoilers, do not search for a supposed exact chronological timestamp. The game’s structure gives you flexibility, and the important transition is to finish the expansion before leaving ME1 for good. It is also fine to complete the main story first and then return to available side content only if your edition allows that save flow; the safest first-play recommendation remains doing Bring Down the Sky during the campaign.

Pinnacle Station
If you are deliberately playing the original game and have access to this add-on, it is an optional extra to check. Skip it in Legendary Edition, where it is absent. Its omission does not prevent you from following the trilogy’s main story, and there is no missing required character arc that blocks ME2.
Do not treat the existence of an original-game help page as evidence that the remaster contains the same file. The classic listing and the remaster are separate edition references. This is the main content trap for ME1 buyers.
Where do the Mass Effect 2 DLC packs fit?
Play the smaller campaign-adjacent packs around recruitment and the main story, rather than treating them as separate games. Leave Lair of the Shadow Broker for late in the campaign or after its finale, and play Arrival last, immediately before starting ME3. This approach lets you meet the major squad and establish the Normandy’s situation before tackling the most consequential late-game additions.
Early and middle campaign
- Normandy Crash Site: Fit it around the main campaign when convenient. It works as a reflective side mission once you have begun settling into ME2’s new Normandy and crew.
- Zaeed – The Price of Revenge: Play around the recruitment phase and main campaign. Its position can depend on when you want to add the character and how quickly you are building the squad.
- Kasumi – Stolen Memory: Play around recruitment and the main story. Taking it during the broader recruitment stretch keeps the character and mission from feeling detached from the rest of ME2.
- Firewalker: Treat it as an optional campaign-side activity, not a separate game. You can use it as a break between major recruitment or loyalty objectives.
- Overlord: Fit it into the middle portion of the playthrough if that suits your pace. It is substantial enough to reserve for a focused session, but it does not need a special position in the trilogy sequence.
These placements make for a convenient, spoiler-conscious run; they are not a studio-issued chronology. The exact point at which to take on these packs is not established as one universal sequence, so prioritize the main campaign flow that works for your playthrough. If a mission is unavailable at the moment you expect, continue recruiting or advancing the main plot rather than assuming your save is broken.

Lair of the Shadow Broker works late in ME2 or after the main finale. Saving it for this point gives the expansion a sense of culmination and avoids placing a major character-focused story before you have experienced enough of the base game. Players who want a cleaner post-finale wrap-up can complete it after the main ending, while those who prefer uninterrupted momentum can do it shortly before the final sequence.
Then save Arrival for last and play it just before ME3: that makes it a natural bridge into the next game. Do not start ME3 first and plan to return to it later if your goal is a single continuous transition. Finish the DLC, make any final ME2 save you want to preserve, and then launch ME3 from that point.
This ordering is a story-flow recommendation, not a required trigger or a guarantee about a particular character outcome. EA’s classic-game support list identifies these DLC packs, but does not publish one universal mission-by-mission order for them.
When should I play the Mass Effect 3 DLC?
Start From Ashes relatively early, complete Omega and Leviathan before the endgame, and leave Citadel for a late-game farewell. Finish Citadel before you begin Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. This gives you access to the major expansions without pushing farewell material past the point at which the campaign can no longer accept it.
From Ashes: early in the campaign
Playing From Ashes early is consistent with advice in an EA-hosted player discussion. That makes it a useful recommendation for a first playthrough, but it is community guidance rather than an official required order. Starting it relatively early also means you have more time to experience its character and dialogue in later missions.
You do not have to stop the opening campaign immediately if the game has not yet made the expansion available. Advance normally, then complete it when it appears. The key point is to avoid leaving it until the final run if you want its perspective woven through the rest of ME3.

Omega and Leviathan: before the endgame
Complete both expansions before starting the endgame. Their relative order is flexible, so choose based on whether you want a major combat-focused detour first or a later investigative reveal. If avoiding a story revelation matters to you, consider leaving Leviathan until later in the campaign; the available advice does not establish one exact in-universe timestamp for either expansion.
Keep an eye on the main-mission names as you progress. “Before the endgame” is deliberately broader than a single universal trigger: the recommendation is to finish both while the campaign is still open and before committing to its closing sequence.
Citadel: late, but before Cerberus Headquarters
An EA-hosted support discussion says the Citadel expansion opens after Priority: The Citadel II and identifies Priority: Cerberus Headquarters as the later cutoff. Treat that as forum guidance rather than a formal sequence issued by the studio. In practical terms, begin the expansion once it is available, but reserve its larger farewell activities for the late portion of your run.
Waiting until late can give you more opportunity to establish campaign companions and encounters before the farewell content. Which guests or scenes you actually get depends on your choices and progress, so no single guest list is guaranteed. If you want to see as much of the optional celebration as your save permits, finish recruitment, loyalty and major side content first, then complete the Citadel activities before launching the stated cutoff mission.
Extended Cut: already part of the Legendary Edition ending
If you are playing Legendary Edition, you do not need to schedule Extended Cut as a separate epilogue: it is already the default finale. There is no additional download or separate mission to insert after ME3’s ending in this edition.
EA also says the remaster’s galactic readiness no longer depends on multiplayer or the former companion app. You can therefore play the trilogy as a single-player experience without treating multiplayer participation as a requirement for the ending system.
Does Legendary Edition include every DLC?
No. EA advertises more than 40 DLC packs in Legendary Edition, but the collection is not absolutely complete: Pinnacle Station is the notable confirmed omission. The right way to describe the package is “the three single-player games and more than 40 DLC packs,” not “every DLC ever released.”
Two other edition details can make DLC descriptions confusing:
- Genesis comics: Optional Mass Effect: Genesis comics are built into Legendary Edition before ME2 and ME3. They let someone starting at either sequel establish earlier choices, but they are not a substitute for playing the trilogy on a first run. Use them as a catch-up tool if you begin with a sequel, not as an excuse to skip the original games when you want the full narrative.
- Equipment packs: Older weapon and armor DLC is distributed through research and merchants as you progress in Legendary Edition, rather than automatically placing every item in your inventory at the beginning. These packs are equipment, not story missions to slot into a chronological itinerary. If an item is not available immediately, continue the campaign and check the relevant progression systems instead of assuming content is missing.
Andromeda’s multiplayer microcontent is another separate category. It should not be confused with a missing single-player story chapter. A store page can list multiplayer items without implying that a campaign expansion exists.
Original releases versus Legendary Edition
The original releases matter mainly when you want Pinnacle Station, already own older discs, or need a platform that the remaster does not cover. In that situation, identify the exact game edition, included add-ons and storefront before planning a purchase. A classic-game support page can document DLC availability without guaranteeing that a particular second-hand disc, bundle or regional release includes it.

Legendary Edition is generally simpler for a new trilogy run because its three games are sold together and its large DLC bundle is integrated into progression. It also removes the former multiplayer and companion-app readiness dependence described by EA. The trade-off is that Pinnacle Station is unavailable there, so completionists who specifically want that optional ME1 activity must use an original release.
Do not infer physical format, stock or condition from EA’s platform list. A PS4-supported edition may be sold digitally or on disc, and marketplace availability can change. Confirm those details in the exact listing you intend to buy.
Where does Mass Effect: Andromeda fit?
Andromeda is optional and separate from the Shepard trilogy. Play it after ME3 if you want another Pathfinder-led adventure, rather than inserting it between trilogy games or treating it as the next Shepard campaign. Its premise, cast and setting direction are distinct enough that it works best as a follow-up, not as a bridge between ME2 and ME3.
There is no save-import requirement linking the trilogy’s Shepard choices to Andromeda. Finish the trilogy first if you want the clearest sense of progression through the original arc, then approach Andromeda as its own game.
BioWare’s studio statement on August 19, 2017, said: “Our last update, 1.10, was the final update for Mass Effect: Andromeda.” The team also said it planned no further single-player or in-game story content. That means there is no additional single-player story expansion to add after the base game based on that announcement. It does not mean that multiplayer packs are story chapters; multiplayer microcontent belongs to a separate category.

- Choose one edition and keep your saves together. Legendary Edition is the convenient all-in-one starting point on PS4, Xbox One or PC through the EA app or Steam.
- Finish ME1 with Bring Down the Sky included. Skip Pinnacle Station if you are on the remaster; only the original release has it.
- Import into ME2. Complete Normandy Crash Site, Zaeed, Kasumi, Firewalker and Overlord around the campaign as they become convenient.
- Close out ME2’s late content. Play Lair of the Shadow Broker late or after the finale, then complete Arrival immediately before ME3.
- Begin ME3 and add From Ashes early. Complete Omega and Leviathan before committing to the endgame.
- Reserve Citadel for the farewell. It becomes available after Priority: The Citadel II in the cited forum guidance; finish its activities before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.
- Complete ME3. Extended Cut is already part of Legendary Edition, and multiplayer is not required for its galactic-readiness system.
- Decide whether to continue with Andromeda. Treat it as an optional Pathfinder game, not as ME4 or a missing Shepard chapter.
For a first playthrough, keep the three main games in order and treat DLC as additions to the campaign rather than detours that need a perfect calendar placement. The essential transition is straightforward: finish ME1, continue in ME2, play Arrival just before ME3, and save ME3’s Citadel farewell content until late while observing its endgame cutoff.
If you start with ME2 or ME3 instead of playing the whole trilogy, Genesis offers an optional way to establish previous choices in Legendary Edition. For a first-time player, however, it is a catch-up option—not the recommended replacement for the earlier games.
The other common mistake is to assume all DLC is a story mission. The trilogy’s equipment packs, optional activity packs, story expansions, and Andromeda multiplayer microcontent do not belong in one uninterrupted mission order. Use the campaign placements above for narrative DLC and acquire gear naturally through the remaster’s progression.

Is Mass Effect 2 (2010 Edition) actually a 2023 game?
No. EA’s current store listing displays a 2023 date for that edition, but that date is not the original release date of Mass Effect 2. Check the exact edition description when deciding what content a particular purchase includes.
Do Mass Effect Legendary Edition equipment packs appear in my inventory immediately?
No. The remaster routes older weapon and armor items through research and merchants during progression. That distribution is why equipment add-ons do not need individual positions in a story-mission schedule.

Has BioWare announced a single-player story expansion after Mass Effect: Andromeda?
BioWare’s August 19, 2017 statement described patch 1.10 as the game’s final update and said no further single-player or in-game story content was planned. The statement distinguishes story content from multiplayer microcontent.
Does Legendary Edition include Pinnacle Station?

When should I play Arrival?

Save Citadel for late in ME3. Forum guidance says it opens after Priority: The Citadel II and should be completed before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. Guest availability depends on your choices and progress.
Can I skip Mass Effect 1 and use Genesis?
You can start at ME2 or ME3 and use the optional Genesis comics in Legendary Edition to establish earlier choices. For a first playthrough, playing the trilogy in order provides more context and is the recommended route.
