For a steadier frame rate in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, first set a realistic frame-rate target and check the game’s resolution; then try disabling Dynamic Shadows, followed by Ambient Occlusion. Keep Antialiasing on if you can: PC Gamer’s 2021 measurements found its performance gain from disabling it was small, while the image became visibly jaggier. There is no universal best preset—the right balance depends on your GPU, resolution, display refresh rate, and the scenes you play.
This order aims to recover performance without stripping away the remaster’s visual character. EA says the trilogy received more than 30,000 improved textures, so it makes sense to adjust costly settings selectively rather than switch everything to low.

What should I change first for better performance?
Start with the frame rate you want to sustain and the resolution you are actually running. If performance still falls short, lower resolution one step, then test Dynamic Shadows, Ambient Occlusion, and—only if necessary—Antialiasing. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which tradeoff helps on your PC.
- Set a practical target. Check your monitor’s refresh rate and choose a cap your PC can maintain in demanding scenes, rather than chasing a high peak that fluctuates. The game offers caps of 30, 60, 120, 144, and 240 fps.
- Confirm resolution. Use your display’s native or intended resolution if performance allows. If you are below target, reduce it by one step and compare the image and frame pacing before changing multiple effects.
- Test Dynamic Shadows. Turn them off if you need more headroom. This was the largest-impact individual graphics toggle in PC Gamer’s mid-range test.
- Test Ambient Occlusion. Disable it next if the frame rate remains short of target; it can recover some performance, with a scene-dependent loss of depth shading.
- Keep Antialiasing unless necessary. Turn it off only if the other changes are not enough and you can accept more jagged edges.
- Treat Motion Blur and Film Grain as visual preferences. Disable either if you prefer a clearer or less processed image, but do not expect them to solve a substantial frame-rate problem.
This is a troubleshooting order, not an official EA preset. It prioritizes changes that the cited measurements suggest are more useful before asking you to accept a conspicuous loss in image quality.

Which settings offer the best performance tradeoffs?
Resolution is the broadest lever; among the tested individual toggles, Dynamic Shadows recovered the most performance in PC Gamer’s mid-range configuration. The numbers below are that outlet’s results from 2021, not predictions for every PC or a guarantee of what a current system will gain.
| Setting or change | Measured performance effect | Visual tradeoff | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower resolution | PC Gamer found resolution more practically important than individual effect toggles, particularly for 4K play; it did not provide one universal percentage. | Less detail and sharpness, especially on a display above the selected resolution. | First image-quality adjustment when the current resolution is too demanding. |
| Disable Dynamic Shadows | 16% higher frame rate on PC Gamer’s mid-range rig in its 2021 test. | Reduced character shadowing; PC Gamer described the difference as relatively limited compared with modern games. | When a modest performance shortfall remains after checking target and resolution. |
| Disable Ambient Occlusion | 7% improvement, from 126 fps to 135 fps, in PC Gamer’s 2021 test. | Less depth shading in corners, alcoves, and other occluded areas; visibility varies by scene. | After shadows, if more headroom is needed. |
| Disable Antialiasing | Just under 6% improvement in PC Gamer’s 2021 test. | More visible jagged edges, according to the same report. | As a later compromise, not a free performance gain. |
| Disable Motion Blur or Film Grain | Little performance effect in PC Gamer’s cited testing. | Changes the image’s motion presentation or film-like texture. | When you dislike the effect, rather than as a primary FPS fix. |
PC Gamer’s 2021 article tested three configurations: a GTX 1650 Super with a Core i5-10400F, an RTX 3060 Ti with a Ryzen 5 5600X, and an RTX 3080 with a Ryzen 9 5900X. It also reported 55 fps at 4K on a GeForce GTX 1650 Ti with maximum settings. Those are dated results under that article’s test conditions; current hardware, drivers, game updates, operating systems, and scene loads can produce different outcomes.

How should I set resolution, VSync, and the frame-rate cap?
Use the combination that fits your display and the rate your PC can sustain. EA’s PC settings documentation lists Fullscreen and Borderless display modes, VSync, and five frame-rate caps; none is best for every setup.
Resolution and display mode
Resolution changes how many pixels the game renders, making it the first large-scale performance lever to consider. At higher resolutions—especially 4K—the GPU has more work to do. Lowering resolution can help, but it is a direct sharpness tradeoff, so try the smallest reduction that reaches your target.

Fullscreen is a conventional starting point. Borderless is also supported and may suit players who switch between the game and other windows frequently. The available documentation does not establish Borderless as an FPS improvement, so choose between the modes for workflow rather than assuming one is faster.
VSync
Enable VSync if screen tearing is distracting. EA says synchronization can prevent tearing, but may introduce input lag; with VSync enabled, the monitor’s refresh rate limits the maximum frame rate. If responsiveness matters more than tearing, compare play with it on and off in your own setup.

Frame-rate cap
The listed choices are 30, 60, 120, 144, and 240 fps; EA documents 240 fps as the default. A cap near your display’s practical refresh target can be a sensible starting point—for example, 60 for a 60 Hz target or 120 for a 120 Hz target—if the PC can maintain it. That is a frame-pacing recommendation, not a universal developer mandate. A higher cap is not automatically smoother if the frame rate repeatedly falls short.
What do the main graphics settings change?
Understanding the visible cost of each setting helps you make a targeted adjustment instead of lowering image quality across the board.

Dynamic Shadows
Dynamic Shadows affect character shadowing. In PC Gamer’s 2021 mid-range test, switching them off produced the strongest measured gain among the individual toggles it compared. If you are only slightly below your target, this is a reasonable first effect to test; inspect shadowed characters and scenes you care about before deciding whether to keep the change.
Ambient Occlusion
Ambient Occlusion adds depth in places where light is blocked, such as corners and alcoves. Its effect can be subtle in some scenes, which makes it a plausible next compromise after shadows. EA also identifies turning it off as a possible performance improvement.
Antialiasing
Antialiasing smooths the edges of objects. Disabling it gave PC Gamer’s test just under a 6% performance improvement, but the outlet reported a noticeable increase in jagged edges. Keep it enabled when image quality matters and the system has enough headroom.
Motion Blur and Film Grain
These are aesthetic effects, not dependable performance fixes. PC Gamer found little performance impact from them in its test. Turn them off if the presentation feels too soft, grainy, or uncomfortable to you; look elsewhere if the problem is a meaningful frame-rate shortfall.

HDR
HDR is a display and image-calibration choice, not a universal FPS optimization. EA documents an Auto option plus separate HDR contrast and brightness controls. The documented HDR brightness scale runs from 400 to 10000; that range describes the control, not a recommended value for every monitor. If HDR looks washed out or too dim, check the HDR path and calibration rather than raising brightness indiscriminately.
What should I check if the game stutters or looks wrong?
First distinguish an unstable frame rate from a display-setting mismatch. Confirm the intended resolution, display, refresh target, VSync state, and cap before reducing several effects at once.

Recheck the same type of demanding scene after each change.
- The image looks jagged: restore Antialiasing before restoring lower-impact post-processing effects.
- The image looks soft or overly processed: try Motion Blur and Film Grain off as preference changes. These are not likely to resolve substantial stuttering.
- The image looks washed out or incorrectly bright: check that HDR is appropriate for your display and operating-system configuration, then adjust the game’s HDR contrast and brightness controls.
- The game tears: try VSync, bearing in mind EA’s warning that it may add input lag and ties the maximum frame rate to monitor refresh.
Make a single change, revisit the affected scene, and reverse it if the visual cost outweighs the improvement. This isolates the cause more clearly than applying a broad low-quality preset.

Meeting the minimum does not mean every resolution or effect combination will hold a particular frame rate. If the PC is close to the minimum tier, a lower resolution and selective effect reductions may be necessary; the measured 2021 figures should not be treated as a current promise for that hardware.
Why preserve the remaster’s visual settings?
The upgraded presentation is a central part of this edition, not just a sharper resolution option. EA says the trilogy received more than 30,000 improved textures and was rebuilt on a more modern, unified Unreal Engine 3 foundation, while aiming to retain the original aesthetic. That context supports a selective approach: preserve the image-defining improvements where possible, and make the least costly changes your hardware needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mass Effect Legendary Edition support ultrawide monitors?
The EA PC settings information summarized here does not establish ultrawide support or specify supported aspect ratios. Check the resolution options available on your display before assuming the game will fill an ultrawide panel without stretching or bars.
Can I use a controller on the PC version?
Controller support is a separate compatibility question from graphics performance, and the cited EA settings information does not specify supported controller models. Check the current EA app or Steam product information for the version you own if controller compatibility is decisive.
Will a newer graphics driver fix stuttering in this game?
The cited performance measurements are from 2021 and do not compare driver versions, so they cannot establish that a particular driver fixes stuttering. A driver update may be part of general PC troubleshooting, but it should not replace checking resolution, frame pacing, and the game’s graphics settings.
