Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the updated way to play Commander Shepard’s three single-player campaigns as one package, but it is not a complete preservation of every original feature. Electronic Arts says it bundles all three games with over 40 DLC packs and remastered presentation; it also leaves out the first game’s Pinnacle Station add-on and Mass Effect 3’s original multiplayer. The biggest gameplay changes are in Mass Effect 1, while the third game’s Extended Cut ending is included by default.

Is Legendary Edition a remaster or a remake?
Legendary Edition is a remaster: it upgrades the presentation and adjusts selected gameplay systems while retaining the structure and core experience of the original three games. It is not a fourth Mass Effect, nor a ground-up remake that rebuilds the trilogy from scratch.

The visual work includes updated character models, textures, lighting, shadows, effects and depth of field. Electronic Arts says the project involved well over 30,000 individual textures; that figure describes the development work, not a promise that every environment or character looks newly made. BioWare’s visual-improvements account explains the approach.
EA also describes 4K- and HDR-capable presentation and console options that prioritize graphics or frame rate. Those capabilities depend on the hardware and display in use, so the package should not be read as a guarantee of identical resolution, HDR, or frame rate on every platform. The point of the remaster is a more consistent, modernized presentation across the trilogy, not a claim that the underlying games have become technically identical.

What is different between Legendary Edition and the original trilogy?
The broadest differences are the unified package, upgraded visuals, revised controls and systems in Mass Effect 1, and changes to the way selected content and the ME3 finale work. The original games may retain content that the remaster does not, so “newer” does not automatically mean “contains everything.”
| Area | Original releases | Legendary Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Package | Three separate games, with platform- and release-specific content arrangements | All three single-player campaigns and over 40 bundled DLC packs, according to EA |
| Visuals | Original assets and presentation | Remastered models, textures, lighting and effects, with 4K/HDR-capable presentation |
| Mass Effect 1 combat | Original aiming, weapon handling and squad behavior | Adjusted aiming and accuracy, independent squad commands, more reliable cover and ability changes |
| Mass Effect 1 exploration and inventory | Original Mako handling and inventory systems | Revised Mako controls and inventory sorting and junk handling |
| Mass Effect 1 Pinnacle Station | Available with the original release on supported platforms | Not included |
| Mass Effect 3 multiplayer | Part of the original ME3 release | Not included; Galactic Readiness is handled differently |
| ME3 ending | Extended Cut was a separate add-on | Extended Cut is the default finale |
| Platforms | Availability and backward compatibility depend on each original release and platform | PC, PS4 and Xbox One; backward compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S |
How does Mass Effect 1 play differently?
Mass Effect 1 receives the most extensive gameplay adjustments. The goal is to make combat and its supporting systems feel less cumbersome without removing the game’s class distinctions or replacing its role in the trilogy.
Recommended Free Tools
Combat and squad commands
EA lists controlled reticle bloom, improved aim-down-sights behavior and aim assist among the changes. Weapon use is broader across character classes, but class-specific specializations remain. Squadmates can be commanded independently, and cover behavior is more reliable. These changes affect the rhythm of encounters: players have more direct control over aiming and teammates than in the original release, while the game remains an RPG with character builds rather than becoming a conventional shooter.
Abilities and headshot behavior were also adjusted. EA’s description does not establish that every weapon or class has been rebalanced in the same way, so it is more accurate to call this a set of targeted calibrations than a wholesale combat redesign. Players returning to the original should expect differences in feel, especially in aiming and issuing squad orders, but not a new combat system.
Mako, inventory and progression
The Mako has smoother handling, adjusted weight and a rear boost. Inventory management gains sorting and junk-conversion options, while experience progression is rebalanced. EA also says the first-playthrough level cap was removed. Together, these changes reduce some friction in exploration and item management while preserving the original mission structure and vehicle sequences. They do not remove the Mako from the game or turn planetary exploration into a different mode.
The original and remastered versions therefore differ in practical ways even when a player is following the same campaign. Those who prefer the older handling or system behavior may favor the original; for a first run through the trilogy, the remaster’s revised controls and inventory are part of its appeal.

What changes in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3?
ME2 and ME3 have more targeted adjustments than ME1. The trilogy’s story and campaign progression remain central, but some balancing, reputation-related fixes and endgame-readiness rules are not exactly as they were in the original releases.
Mass Effect 2
EA identifies an adjustment to ammunition drops in ME2 and fixes to reputation-related issues that could affect later outcomes. The significance is mainly continuity and balance: ME2 still serves as the second campaign in Shepard’s story, but certain systems feeding into later progression were tuned for the remastered collection.
Mass Effect 3 and Galactic Readiness
In the original ME3, Galactic Readiness could be affected by factors outside the single-player campaign. In Legendary Edition, readiness is tied to progress through the trilogy rather than depending on multiplayer or the former companion app. EA cautions that a player who begins only with ME3 may need to complete nearly every available option to reach the best preparation threshold. A full trilogy run gives campaign decisions and progress a more direct role in the readiness calculation.
The Extended Cut finale is included by default. BioWare’s Mass Effect team stated, “And on that note: the Extended Cut ending is now the game’s default finale.” That matters when comparing versions: in the original release, Extended Cut was a separate add-on, whereas players do not need to add it separately to Legendary Edition.
Does Legendary Edition include all the DLC?
No. EA advertises over 40 story, weapon, armor and promotional DLC packs in the collection, but that count does not mean every item ever associated with every original release made it in. The careful description is that Legendary Edition bundles a large selection of single-player add-ons, with at least one known exception.
Story expansions such as Citadel and Leviathan are included. The original Mass Effect 1 add-on Pinnacle Station is not. In a launch-era interview, game director Mac Walters attributed its absence to corrupted recovered source backups. That explanation is specific to this add-on; it should not be generalized into a claim that every other original DLC item is missing or that every possible promotional extra is included.

Some weapons and armor that appeared as immediate unlocks in original releases are earned through in-game research or merchants in the remaster instead. This means “included” does not always mean “available from the start.” It also means the marketed count refers to a mix of content types, rather than over 40 story expansions.
Legendary Edition includes the optional Genesis comics, which let players make story choices when starting directly with ME2 or ME3. The comics provide a way to establish key decisions without playing the earlier campaign, but they are not a substitute for carrying over a full save with all its accumulated choices.
Is Pinnacle Station in Legendary Edition?
No. Pinnacle Station is the notable missing single-player add-on. It appeared in the original Mass Effect 1 release on supported platforms, but it was not rebuilt for Legendary Edition after the developer encountered corrupted source backups while recovering its materials.
That omission is relevant mainly to players who want every original activity or are comparing the collection with a fully equipped original copy. It does not prevent playing the main ME1 campaign, and it should not be confused with the much larger story expansions bundled in the remaster.
Is Mass Effect 3 multiplayer in Legendary Edition?
No. Legendary Edition is a single-player collection and does not include the original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mode. EA’s product description identifies the included content as single-player; the remaster does not add a replacement multiplayer component.
This exclusion is separate from Galactic Readiness. The collection rebalances readiness around progress through the trilogy, so its ME3 finale does not require multiplayer participation or the former companion app. This describes how Legendary Edition works; it does not establish whether original ME3 multiplayer servers or services are accessible on a particular platform today.

Which platforms can run Legendary Edition?
EA lists Legendary Edition for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It can also be played through backward compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is not the same as a separately released native PS5 edition, and the US PlayStation product listing identifies the game as a PS4 product.
On PC, EA’s Windows requirements list 120 GB of hard-drive space. That is the published requirement, not an independently measured install-size result, and available space can be affected by system needs and installation choices. The listing and platform details are available from EA’s Legendary Edition product page.
EA also describes graphics- and frame-rate-preference modes on consoles. The presence of those options does not support a universal performance figure: results depend on the console, display and selected mode. If choosing between versions for an existing console, distinguish backward compatibility from a native current-generation release rather than assuming the package has a separate PS5 or Xbox Series edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which version should you choose?
For most players whose priority is a convenient, updated run through Shepard’s three single-player campaigns, Legendary Edition is the clearest bundled choice. The package brings the campaigns together, includes over 40 DLC packs, modernizes presentation and makes targeted improvements to ME1 and the ME3 finale.
Choose Legendary Edition if…
- You want the three campaigns in one collection rather than sourcing each original game and its add-ons separately.
- You value the remastered visuals and the revised ME1 aiming, squad commands, inventory and Mako handling.
- You want major single-player expansions such as Citadel and Leviathan included, and prefer the Extended Cut finale as the default.
- You are starting a new trilogy run and do not specifically need the original ME3 multiplayer or Pinnacle Station.
Investigate an original release if…
- You specifically want Pinnacle Station or the original ME3 multiplayer component.
- You prefer the originals’ presentation or mechanics and are willing to deal with platform-specific availability and content arrangements.
- You are considering a secondhand copy and can verify the platform, edition, disc condition and any separately required DLC access before buying.
An original physical copy should not be treated as a guarantee that omitted DLC is included or downloadable today. Likewise, Legendary Edition’s omission of multiplayer does not prove the current status of original-game online services. Those questions depend on platform and present-day availability, neither of which can be inferred from the edition comparison alone.
What should you check before buying a physical copy?
Console physical editions may require both installation discs. EA community support describes the Play Disc and Data Disc installation path; for a used listing, check that both discs are present and that the target console supports the edition. A listing showing only the Play Disc may be incomplete even if the game case appears to be correct.

- Confirm the platform. PS4 and Xbox One discs are not interchangeable. For PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, check backward compatibility for the specific console and edition.
- Check the disc count. Verify that the Play Disc and Data Disc are both included when the edition uses them.
- Check condition and seller details. Confirm that the discs are readable and that the listing accurately describes the included case and materials.
- Separate base-game ownership from extra entitlements. A used copy does not automatically establish access to separately sold original DLC, online features, or content omitted from Legendary Edition.
EA’s community discussion of the physical installation process is available at the Mass Effect Legendary Edition installation thread. Digital catalog presence, stock, regional pricing and subscription access can change; check the current store listing in the region and platform where you intend to play rather than relying on an old offer.
How we picked the comparison criteria
This comparison focuses on the distinctions that change what a player receives or experiences: included campaigns and add-ons, visual and gameplay revisions, the missing original features, platform compatibility, and the way ME3 readiness and finale work. EA’s product and gameplay descriptions establish the collection’s advertised content and updates; BioWare’s visual account explains the remaster approach; the reported developer interview establishes the stated reason for Pinnacle Station’s absence. No performance benchmark or independently audited item-by-item DLC count is implied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start Legendary Edition with Mass Effect 2 or Mass Effect 3 and still make earlier story choices?
Yes. The optional Genesis comics let players make key choices when beginning at ME2 or ME3. They provide a starting point for those decisions, but do not reproduce every consequence of playing through and importing a full earlier campaign.
How much storage does Mass Effect Legendary Edition need on PC?
EA’s Windows requirements list 120 GB of hard-drive space. Treat that as the published requirement, not a measured install size; check the current PC store listing before installation in case its requirements change.
Does a used Legendary Edition disc include both installation discs?
Not necessarily: used listings can be incomplete. Before buying, ask the seller to confirm that both the Play Disc and Data Disc are present, and verify that the disc edition matches your console.
Is there a native PS5 version of Mass Effect Legendary Edition?
EA lists the collection for PS4, with PS5 access through backward compatibility. The US PlayStation listing identifies it as a PS4 product, so do not assume a separately released native PS5 edition.
