There is no single Mass Effect composer or one complete soundtrack album. Jack Wall and Sam Hulick lead the original game’s score with additional music from Richard Jacques and David Kates; Wall returned for Mass Effect 2 with Hulick, Jacques? No—David Kates and Jimmy Hinson named on his composing team. Mass Effect 3‘s principal album credits Clint Mansell and Sam Hulick, while its expansions add other composers. John Paesano composed Mass Effect: Andromeda.
The music also exists in several forms: interactive game audio, individual score albums, DLC releases, a historical Legendary Edition digital bonus, and curated vinyl sets. The guide below separates those products and credits so you can choose the version that actually matches what you want to hear.

Who composed the Mass Effect soundtracks?
The composer changes by game and sometimes by release. Album-level artist lines are useful for identifying the principal score team, but they do not prove that one person wrote every cue on an album or in a DLC chapter.
| Game or release | Principal credited composers | What the credit means |
|---|---|---|
| Mass Effect (2007) | Jack Wall and Sam Hulick; additional music by Richard Jacques and David Kates | Wall is listed as lead composer and producer. Hulick, Jacques and Kates also contributed score material. |
| Mass Effect 2 (2010) | Jack Wall, with Sam Hulick, David Kates and Jimmy Hinson named on his composing team | EA announced Wall’s return and a larger orchestral direction. Separate score, atmospheric, combat and DLC albums have their own track lists and credits. |
| Mass Effect 3 (2012) | Clint Mansell and Sam Hulick on the principal album | This is an album-level shorthand, not a cue-by-cue authorship list. Extended Cut, Leviathan and Citadel add different contributors. |
| Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) | John Paesano | BioWare describes a score combining orchestra and synthesized elements, including analog synthesizers. |
The credits song in the first game is a separate case. Faunts wrote and performed “m4 part II”; it is not the same thing as Wall and Hulick’s instrumental score.

What does the 2007 Mass Effect score sound like?
The first game’s music builds a distinctly electronic science-fiction atmosphere around recurring melodic ideas. The original album identifies the jointly credited “Mass Effect Theme,” Sam Hulick’s “The Normandy” and Jack Wall’s “Eden Prime” as useful entry points, but the album should not be described as Wall’s work alone.
Its sound world often places synth textures, spacious ambience and restrained thematic writing beside more traditional dramatic passages. Those are listening descriptions rather than a claim that every cue uses the same palette. The game itself can present music differently from an album because its audio system chooses and loops material as play changes.

A CD copy, a digital file and the music heard during a play-through are related but not identical products: the album fixes a sequence and duration, while the game can trigger variations or omit sections entirely.
How did Mass Effect 2 change the musical style?
Mass Effect 2 keeps the series’ science-fiction identity but expands its cinematic and orchestral scale. In a January 2010 EA/BioWare announcement, BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka described Wall’s work as “perfectly blends classic sci-fi inspired sounds with unique arrangements.” The announcement also referred to nearly three hours of orchestral arrangements; that wording describes the game’s score, not the running time of one retail album.
EA announced Wall’s return as lead and identified Sam Hulick, David Kates and Jimmy Hinson among his composing team. This explains why a simple “Jack Wall soundtrack” label is incomplete even when Wall is the headline name.
For a first listen, the official trilogy vinyl track list includes “The Illusive Man,” “The Normandy Reborn” and “Suicide Mission.” Their appearance in a compilation does not establish an individual cue’s composer, so use them as listening touchstones rather than attribution evidence.
Why are there several Mass Effect 2 albums?
The main Original Videogame Score is only one part of the release map. Catalogued companion releases include Atmospheric and Combat collections, while DLC albums cover Kasumi’s Stolen Memory, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival. A listener who wants every commercially issued ME2 album must therefore look beyond the main score.

Those titles should not be merged into a claim of one exhaustive “ME2 soundtrack.” They are separate releases with different selections, and a compilation may include music that is absent from the main album while still omitting cues heard in the game.
Who composed Mass Effect 3, and what is its musical character?
The principal Mass Effect 3 album credits Clint Mansell and Sam Hulick. That line identifies the main album’s headline artists, not every cue in the game or its downloadable chapters.
The score’s best-known pieces frame a desperate, emotional war story. “Leaving Earth” emphasizes loss and scale, while “An End, Once and For All” serves as a reflective resolution cue. These tracks show the album’s cinematic, mournful side without assigning either cue to a specific composer when the cited album-level sources do not provide that track-level evidence.

Is the Andromeda soundtrack orchestral or electronic?
It is both. BioWare’s 2017 description says the soundtrack “combines orchestral and synthesized elements,” with analog synthesizers evoking classic Blade Runner-style science-fiction scoring.
That combination contrasts with, but does not completely break from, the original trilogy’s electronic and orchestral vocabulary. Paesano’s music can move from broad orchestral statements to synthetic color, which suits a game about exploration, new worlds and uncertain identity.
The official three-LP listing highlights “A Trail of Hope,” “Wake Up” and “Pathfinder,” along with extended versions. It also advertises more than 50 minutes of previously unreleased music. Those details describe that specific three-LP edition, not every digital or in-game version of the score.

How does interactive Mass Effect music differ from an album?
A soundtrack album is a fixed listening program; the game uses adaptive layers that can change with gameplay intensity. Sam Hulick has explained that he delivered stems, after which BioWare’s audio system selected layers and used loopable middle sections as situations changed.
In practical terms, a combat encounter may add rhythmic or harmonic layers, then remove them when the action subsides. Exploration can use a thinner arrangement, while a story reveal can trigger a composed transition. The album presents selected, edited cues in a dependable order, so it cannot reproduce every possible in-game combination.
This difference also explains why a “complete soundtrack” claim needs a definition. It might mean every commercial album, every DLC release, every stem used by the interactive system, or simply a long fan playlist. Those are not interchangeable goals.
What Mass Effect soundtrack albums and compilations are available?
A release map is more useful than a single discography because each game has a main score, while later games add DLC and curated collections.

| Release type | Coverage | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mass Effect album and CD | The 2007 game’s documented album selections | Hearing Wall, Hulick and the additional contributors in the first game’s original context. |
| Mass Effect 2: Original Videogame Score | Main ME2 score | A focused introduction to Wall’s second-game direction. |
| ME2 Atmospheric, Combat and DLC albums | Additional ME2 material, including four named story expansions | Listeners who want more than the main score. |
| Mass Effect 3 main album | Principal ME3 album selections | The central war-and-resolution program. |
| Extended Cut, Leviathan and Citadel | ME3 add-on releases | Expansion-specific music and contributors. |
| Mass Effect: Andromeda album | Paesano’s score | The game’s orchestral-and-synth palette in album form. |
| Trilogy or Legendary Edition compilations | Selected tracks from multiple games | Convenient listening, not a complete archive. |
A compilation’s length or track count should never be treated as proof that it contains every cue. Curated sets prioritize a coherent sequence, recognizable themes, or physical-media limits.
What was the Legendary Edition soundtrack bonus?
EA described a historical promotional bonus for Mass Effect Legendary Edition as 88 trilogy tracks plus “Resynthesis,” a new launcher theme. The stated promotion ran from May 5 through May 31, 2021. It is not an ongoing giveaway, and the Faunts tracks were excluded from that bonus.
That 88-track digital offer is different from both the games and the vinyl products. EA’s currently accessible PC extras page separately lists original-soundtrack downloads for Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda; access can depend on the edition, account and region, so check the live page before relying on an old promotion or download link.

What is on the Mass Effect trilogy vinyl box set?
The official BioWare Gear Omni-Blade trilogy set is a curated four-LP collection with 85 tracks from all three original-trilogy games. BioWare names SpaceLab9 as its production partner and notes that some selections were previously unreleased.
It is not the same as the 88-track Legendary Edition bonus. The numbers represent different products, and the vinyl set’s 85 tracks are selected for the physical compilation rather than a promise to include every game or DLC cue.
BioWare announced an earlier four-record trilogy pressing in 2016. Do not assume that announcement and a later store variant have identical packaging, contents or availability. The checked BioWare Gear catalog marked both listed trilogy variants out of stock; retailer stock, prices and pressing condition can change, so verify those details at the time of purchase.
How is the Andromeda three-LP set different?
The official Andromeda three-LP album concentrates on John Paesano’s score rather than covering the whole trilogy. Its listing advertises extended pieces and more than 50 minutes of previously unreleased music.
That makes it a better fit for someone who specifically wants Paesano’s exploration-focused sound, while the four-LP trilogy set is designed as a cross-game overview. Neither set is a larger replacement for the other: they cover different games and use different editorial selections.

Where can you listen to the Mass Effect soundtrack?
You have four practical routes: play the games, use official digital downloads where your edition provides them, find the documented first-game CD or other album releases, or buy a physical vinyl compilation when a current seller has stock.
- In-game: best for adaptive music, but the sequence and combinations vary with play.
- Digital albums and extras: convenient and searchable; verify which game, DLC and edition a download covers.
- CD: the original Mass Effect album has documented US CD availability, but current new-copy supply is not guaranteed.
- Vinyl: the four-LP trilogy and three-LP Andromeda sets offer physical, curated programs; they are not complete archives.
Availability is especially volatile for physical editions. Store catalog status observed in 2026 is not a promise of future stock, and a retailer’s listing may represent a different pressing or used condition. Check the edition name, LP count, track list and seller’s current description before paying.

How should you choose between the soundtrack releases?
Start with the listening goal rather than the most impressive track count.
- One game’s atmosphere: choose that game’s principal album. For ME2 or ME3, add the relevant DLC release only if you want expansion music.
- The trilogy’s recognizable themes: choose a curated compilation such as the 85-track four-LP set, understanding that it is selective.
- Andromeda specifically: choose Paesano’s album or the three-LP edition, which adds extended and previously unreleased selections.
- Adaptive gameplay: listen while playing. No fixed album can reproduce every stem combination.
- Physical ownership: compare pressing variant, condition, current stock and complete track list rather than relying on an old announcement.
- Digital convenience: check official extras and album listings for the exact edition and region; a game bundle is not automatically an album download.
Which crediting mistakes should you avoid?
Three shortcuts create most misinformation. First, calling the original game “Jack Wall’s soundtrack” erases Sam Hulick and the additional composers. Second, treating the ME3 album’s Mansell/Hulick artist line as cue-by-cue proof can assign music to the wrong person. Third, merging the 88-track historical Legendary Edition bonus with the 85-track vinyl set confuses two separate compilations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Unless a primary track credit is available, describe the cue and its album without naming an author.
Bottom line: which Mass Effect soundtrack is the right one?
There is no single definitive album. The original game’s Wall/Hulick score, ME2’s expanded orchestral science-fiction program, ME3’s Mansell/Hulick-led releases and Andromeda’s Paesano score each represent a different stage of the series. Choose a game-specific album for focused listening, a DLC release for expansion material, the four-LP set for a selected trilogy overview, or the three-LP set for Andromeda; treat all compilations as curated selections rather than complete in-game archives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who composed the first Mass Effect game’s credits song?
Faunts wrote and performed “m4 part II,” the credits song used by the 2007 game. It is a vocal end-credits track and should not be counted as part of the instrumental score credited to Jack Wall, Sam Hulick and additional contributors.
Can a soundtrack album contain music that is not heard in the same order in the game?
Yes. Albums are edited listening programs, while the game’s audio system can select stems, layer intensity changes and loop sections in response to play. The album order therefore reflects a release decision, not a guaranteed play-through sequence.
Recommended Free Tools
Are the Mass Effect vinyl records reissues of every score album?
No. The trilogy four-LP set and the Andromeda three-LP set are curated physical compilations. They omit some game and DLC cues by design, and their pressing, packaging and stock can differ from earlier announcements.
Does buying Legendary Edition include a permanent soundtrack download everywhere?
Not necessarily. The 88-track plus “Resynthesis” offer was a time-limited 2021 promotion, while current extras pages list downloads separately and access can vary by edition or region. Check the live account or store page for the specific copy you own.
Why do composer names differ between a game and its DLC?
DLC chapters are often catalogued as separate releases with their own composing teams. For example, the ME3 Leviathan and Citadel albums have contributor lists that differ from the principal ME3 album, so expansion credits should be read independently.
