Mass Effect is a choice-driven science-fiction saga about Commander Shepard, a human officer drawn into the politics of a multi-species galaxy just as an ancient machine civilization begins its return. The original trilogy—Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3—is the correct starting point because your decisions, relationships, and surviving allies carry forward between games. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the most accessible entry: it bundles the three single-player campaigns and more than 40 pieces of downloadable content. Mass Effect: Andromeda takes place much later with a new protagonist and expedition, so it is best treated as a separate story in the same universe.
What is Mass Effect about?

What do I need to know before playing Mass Effect?
You need only a few concepts. The games explain the rest through dialogue and the in-world Codex, which supplies historical context for species, wars, technologies, and political disputes.
- Mass relays: Ancient infrastructure connecting distant star systems, making travel across the galaxy practical.
- The Citadel: A vast station that serves as the central meeting place and political capital of the main interspecies order.
- The Citadel Council: The leading interspecies authority. Its caution and bureaucracy shape how the early games respond to warnings about the Reapers.
- Spectres: Special operatives empowered to act with unusual independence on the Council’s behalf. Shepard is the first human to receive that status in the trilogy’s opening era.
- Biotics and technology: The setting’s explanation for extraordinary abilities and advanced weapons. You can understand the plot without mastering their technical details immediately.

The important mental model is a layered political community, not a catalogue of alien species. Do I need to play the games in order?
Yes, if you want Shepard’s story and the full effect of the choices. Play Mass Effect, then Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3. Start Andromeda afterward if you want another protagonist and a new region of space.

The conflict is larger than humans versus aliens. It asks whether organic civilizations can avoid repeating a pattern of technological growth, synthetic creation, internal conflict, and collapse. Political choices sit beside that philosophical question. Can former enemies cooperate? Is it acceptable to sacrifice one population to save another? Can a dangerous technology be used without repeating the harm that created it?
The first game presents the Reapers as a possibility that established institutions reject or minimize. By the third game, the question is no longer whether the threat exists; it is whether a divided galaxy can organize quickly enough to survive it.
Mass Effect’s story, with full spoilers
Spoiler warning: The following section discusses the trilogy’s major revelations, conflicts, and overall direction. Stop before this heading if you want to discover those events in play.
Mass Effect (2183 CE): discovery and denial
Shepard begins as a candidate for Spectre status aboard the Normandy. A mission connected to the discovery of Prothean technology leads to a confrontation with Saren, a rogue Spectre. What initially appears to be a political or military investigation expands into evidence that the Reapers are real and that Saren is helping prepare their return.
The first game is primarily the world-building chapter. Shepard visits the Citadel and other systems, meets the major species, and learns how the Council’s institutions work. The resistance to Shepard’s warning is part of the story’s point: evidence of a civilization-ending cycle is difficult for governments to accept when acknowledging it would require abandoning their assumptions about history and security.
Mass Effect 2 (2185 CE): recruitment and the suicide mission
After the Normandy is destroyed, Shepard returns under extraordinary circumstances and investigates the Collectors, an enemy connected to the Reapers. The objective becomes preparation rather than persuasion: assemble specialists, earn their trust, resolve their personal crises, and make sure the team is ready for a mission from which some members may not return.

Its continuity is emotional as well as mechanical. Loyalty, unresolved disputes, and the care taken in preparing the squad influence the experience of the final operation. Mass Effect 3 (2186 CE): the Reaper War
The Reapers invade openly, and Shepard must build a coalition from species with incompatible interests and long memories. The major missions are therefore diplomatic as well as military. Shepard confronts the consequences of earlier policies, including the krogan genophage and the war between quarians and geth, while trying to keep the wider alliance intact.

The finale is not a straightforward good-versus-evil contest. Its major decisions concern coalition-building, species survival, historical responsibility, synthetic and organic life, and the price of compromise. Choices made across all three games determine who can fight beside Shepard and how much support the final war effort has.
Which factions and conflicts should beginners know?
You do not need every faction’s complete history before starting. These groups explain most of the trilogy’s political pressure.
The Citadel Council and the Systems Alliance
The Council is the main interspecies authority, while the Systems Alliance represents humanity’s government and military presence. Humans are ambitious newcomers: powerful enough to demand influence, inexperienced enough to misread the older powers’ caution as simple hostility. Shepard operates between both structures.
Asari, salarians, and turians
These are the core Council powers, but they are not interchangeable. Their political, scientific, military, and cultural roles differ, and those differences shape what each government is willing to risk during the Reaper War.

Krogan and the genophage
The krogan population was devastated by the genophage, a bioweapon deployed by the turians using salarian-developed science after an earlier conflict. The resulting decline is one of the trilogy’s central tests of responsibility and restitution. Any attempt to resolve the issue forces characters to weigh past atrocities against present survival.
Quarians and geth
The quarians created the geth, a synthetic population that eventually became a military threat. Their conflict is the clearest long-running examination of creator and created, fear of artificial life, and the danger of treating an entire population as an enemy. The games deliberately withhold simple moral answers.
Cerberus
Cerberus is a secretive, pro-human paramilitary organization. It becomes increasingly important across the trilogy and related novels, complicating the assumption that humanity’s interests are represented by one government or one definition of loyalty.
Collectors and Reapers
The Collectors are the major intermediary enemy in Mass Effect 2; the Reapers are the overarching machine civilization behind the larger cycle. Understanding that relationship is enough to follow the plot without spoiling every revelation.

Where does Andromeda fit?
Mass Effect: Andromeda is not a fourth Shepard chapter. Its opening takes place in 2819 CE, centuries after the original trilogy’s events in 2183–2186. You follow a new Pathfinder-led expedition searching for a home in an unexplored region of the Andromeda galaxy.
You can understand Andromeda without replaying Shepard’s story, but its contrast is clearer after the trilogy. The earlier games establish the Milky Way’s political history, the trauma caused by the Reaper threat, and the recurring questions about organic and synthetic life. Andromeda then uses a new protagonist and frontier setting rather than continuing Shepard’s personal arc.

How should a new player approach the lore?
Play the trilogy in release order, keep your saves between games, and treat the Codex as an optional explanation rather than homework. Let conversations establish each faction before looking for outside summaries; that preserves the mystery around the Reapers and avoids reading late-game resolutions accidentally.
- Choose a Shepard identity you can maintain across all three games; continuity makes later decisions more meaningful.
- Speak with squad members between missions. Their personal histories explain why loyalty and trust matter as much as combat ability.
- Record unresolved political disputes mentally, especially the genophage and quarian–geth conflict. They return with greater stakes.
- Do not assume a “paragon” or “renegade” response automatically solves a crisis. The trilogy often asks what cost you are willing to accept.
- Read Codex entries when a term is unfamiliar, but skip anything that appears to discuss a mission you have not reached.
