Master X Master (MXM) was NCsoft’s PC multiplayer game built around switching between two playable characters, called Masters. It blended action-MOBA combat with PvP and PvE activities, but its original online service closed on January 31, 2018. This retrospective assessment draws on contemporaneous reviews and documented design details, not firsthand play; the original game cannot be played through its former servers today.
What made Master X Master different?
MXM’s defining idea was a tag-team roster: players selected two Masters and could switch between them during combat. Contemporary coverage presented the game as a hybrid rather than a conventional MOBA, combining action-oriented fighting with a range of multiplayer modes.
That pairing offered a clear tactical promise. Instead of committing to one character for an entire match, a player could bring two different toolsets and change which one was active as a fight developed. The mechanic gave the game a distinctive identity and made team composition about the relationship between two Masters as well as the strengths of each one individually. Contemporary reviews discussed the feature as a central hook, though the available accounts do not establish a single universal verdict on how consistently it improved combat.
How did its modes fit together?
Reviews described MXM as spanning PvP and PvE, including a 5v5 lane-pushing mode alongside other activities. That breadth could appeal to players who wanted more than one kind of match, but it also made the game harder to sum up: it could be approached as an action game, a MOBA, or a PvE multiplayer title, depending on which mode mattered most to the player.

The key review question is whether those modes felt like parts of one coherent game or separate attractions gathered around the same roster and combat system. Contemporary descriptions make clear that MXM crossed genre boundaries; they do not support a definitive claim that every mode served the same audience equally well. Lane-Pushing Games’ January 20, 2018 review also discussed Titan Ruins, illustrating that MXM’s identity extended beyond its lane-pushing PvP format.
Was Master X Master worth seeking out?
As a design concept, MXM had a memorable point of difference: switching between two Masters gave its combat a team-building and adaptation angle that a single-character action-MOBA could not offer in the same way. Its PvP/PvE mix suggested a broader menu than a game focused exclusively on competitive lane matches. That variety was also a potential source of blurred identity; a player looking for one tightly focused genre may have found the overall package less straightforward to categorize.

Those are historical observations, not a recommendation to download or buy the game. NCsoft announced in November 2017 that service would end, and the servers were shut down on January 31, 2018. Game Developer reported that NCsoft said the closure came down to business and that the company had explored options but found none sustainable. The original service is no longer playable.

Master X Master is best remembered as an ambitious hybrid whose two-Master switching mechanic gave it a clear hook, while its range of PvP and PvE modes made its genre identity more complicated. Its short service life is part of the verdict: the concept can be assessed through contemporary coverage, but there is no original live game to revisit now.
