Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error names an application: Repair or reinstall that application first.
- The error appears after an update, cleanup, migration, or incomplete uninstall: Run the application’s repair option, then reinstall the affected version if necessary.
- The file disappeared suddenly: Check Windows Security Protection History and your third-party antivirus quarantine.
- The application starts but crashes while importing a video: Treat this as an import, codec, cache, or application compatibility problem rather than a simple missing-file problem.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: The DLL may exist, but one of its dependencies may be missing.
- The error says “not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image”: Suspect a wrong architecture, damaged file, or mismatched application version.
- Several Windows components are failing: Use DISM and SFC as a later Windows repair step. They generally will not recreate this third-party DLL.
What mc_mfimport.dll is
mc_mfimport.dll is a MainConcept Media Format Importer component used by video software. MainConcept describes its mfimport technology as a file-ingest engine included in its SDKs and applications.

MainConcept technology is used in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Adobe Media Encoder for media formats including MP4/MOV, MPEG transport streams, and MXF. Other licensed video applications may also bundle MainConcept components, so there is no single Windows program responsible for every copy of this file.
This is not a Windows system DLL and it is not the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. It normally belongs beside the application that installed it, or in that application’s media or codec directory. An Adobe crash report, for example, shows the file under an Adobe Premiere Pro installation folder rather than under System32.
The version sometimes listed as 9.6.8.2473 is a third-party index entry for a 32-bit file of approximately 0.87 MB. It is not a universal version for every application. Do not replace your installed copy with a file selected only by its name, version, or reported size.

Start with the error dialog. Write down the program name, executable name, and the complete path if Windows displays one. The executable that fails is more useful than the DLL name alone.
If the dialog does not identify the program:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps and note recently installed media, editing, conversion, or game software.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Sort by installation date and look for the application connected with the failure.
- If the error appears when opening a particular file type, note which application normally imports that file.
- Check the application’s installation folder, but do not move or replace files there yet.
A valid application-owned location may resemble:
C:Program Files<application>mc_mfimport.dll
or a subfolder used for media, codecs, or import modules. A copy found in System32 or SysWOW64 should not automatically be treated as the correct copy.
2. Repair the owning application
Repair is the safest first fix because it restores the vendor’s complete set of files and dependencies.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 application repair
- Press
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Restart Windows and open the application again.
Some desktop programs do not provide an Advanced options page. In that case:

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the installer’s equivalent option.
- Complete the repair and restart the computer.
For Adobe applications, open Creative Cloud, locate Premiere Pro, After Effects, or Media Encoder, and use its installation or update controls. Reinstall the affected product or the affected major version through the legitimate Adobe installation process.
For a game or another launcher-managed application, open its launcher and use Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent command. The menu name differs by product.
A successful repair should allow the application to start without the DLL message. If the error remains, uninstall only the affected application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from its official vendor installer. Do not uninstall Visual C++ packages or unrelated media applications as a substitute.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application component after an update or a false detection.

Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for the affected application or
mc_mfimport.dll. - Select an event to view its details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:
- The file is located inside the verified installation folder.
- The application came from its legitimate vendor or installer.
- The vendor or security administrator confirms that the detection is incorrect.
If you cannot verify the file’s origin, do not restore it. Reinstall the owning application instead, which supplies a fresh vendor-managed copy. Windows Security retains Protection History events for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.
Also check the quarantine area of any third-party antivirus product. After restoring a trusted file, add the application’s official installation directory to an exclusion only if your security policy permits it. Then update the antivirus definitions and scan the application folder.

4. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs the compatible 32-bit version of its bundled component. A 64-bit application needs the matching 64-bit build. Windows being 64-bit does not make a 32-bit application compatible with a 64-bit DLL.

To check the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Find the application’s executable.
- Right-click its column headings and enable Select columns if architecture information is available.
- Check the application’s About page or vendor documentation if Task Manager does not identify it.
Do not copy a 64-bit mc_mfimport.dll over a 32-bit application’s file, or the reverse. A mismatched file can produce “bad image,” loading, or not-designed-for-Windows errors. Reinstall the exact application build instead.
5. Repair Visual C++ only when dependency evidence supports it
mc_mfimport.dll is separate from the Visual C++ runtime, but the host application may depend on Microsoft Visual C++ libraries. Repair this runtime when the application’s prerequisites mention it, the application installer reports a runtime failure, or diagnostic details identify a missing Microsoft runtime dependency.
Use Microsoft’s official Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. Install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs the x86 package; a 64-bit application needs x64. Multiple runtime generations can coexist, so do not remove older packages indiscriminately.
After installing or repairing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
- Test the same operation that previously failed.
If the application still reports mc_mfimport.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step. Installing Visual C++ does not replace the MainConcept file.

6. Handle crashes during media import
If the application starts normally but crashes only when importing a particular video, the DLL may not be missing. The problem can involve corrupt media, an unsupported format, an application bug, an incompatible codec, a stale plug-in, or a damaged media cache.
Work through these checks:
- Test a different video from a known-good source.
- If only one file fails, create a fresh copy or transcode it using the application’s supported workflow.
- Update the host application through its official installer.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, use the application’s supported rollback or install a previous available version.
- Clear the application’s documented media or cache files.
- Temporarily disable third-party plug-ins according to the application vendor’s procedure.
- Review the application’s crash report for the exact path and failing module.
- Contact the application vendor if the same clean media file crashes a freshly repaired installation.
Do not conclude that Windows is missing mc_mfimport.dll solely because the application crashes during import.

7. Check Windows media features when applicable
Windows N and KN editions can omit media components that some video applications require. This is a host-application-dependent issue, and there is no evidence that Windows Media Feature Pack itself normally supplies mc_mfimport.dll.
To check the Windows edition:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read the Windows specifications and edition name.
- If it is an N or KN edition, review the application’s documented requirements.
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Use View features or Add an optional feature to locate the Media Feature Pack when Microsoft lists it for your edition.
- Install it, restart Windows, and test the application.
If the application’s documentation does not mention this requirement, repair the application before changing Windows optional features.

A graphics driver can affect video decoding, preview, or hardware acceleration, but it does not normally provide mc_mfimport.dll. Update drivers when the failure is tied to GPU acceleration, display initialization, or video import crashes.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
- If the failure began after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when available.

9. Run DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They usually cannot recreate a third-party MainConcept DLL, so use them when multiple Windows features fail or system files are also reporting errors.
- Open Start and search for
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports mc_mfimport.dll, repair or reinstall the owning application rather than repeating system scans.

10. Use System Restore only as a last resort
System Restore can help when a restore point predates a failed application update, migration, or incomplete installation and application repair has not worked.

rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications, drivers, and updates that may be reverted.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert applications, settings, and updates after the selected restore point. It does not guarantee recovery of a vendor DLL, so reinstall the owning application afterward if necessary.
What not to do
- Do not copy
mc_mfimport.dllintoSystem32orSysWOW64. - Do not use a random DLL archive as the source.
- Do not replace a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file.
- Do not identify the file as a Windows component merely because the error appears on Windows.
- Do not run registry cleaners to repair it.
- Do not use
regsvr32as a generic DLL fix.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that this media-import component is a self-registering COM or ActiveX server. Running a command such as regsvr32 mc_mfimport.dll normally will not restore a missing file and may create a new, unrelated error.
FAQ
Is mc_mfimport.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence shows that Windows ships this file as a standard System32 or SysWOW64 component. It is a third-party MainConcept media component bundled by an application.
Is it a Visual C++ Redistributable file?
No. The application may depend on Visual C++ libraries, but mc_mfimport.dll itself is a separate MainConcept module.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
A standalone download is not the safe repair path. Use the owning application’s official repair or reinstall process so the correct version, architecture, dependencies, and permissions are restored together.

That wording can mean a dependency of mc_mfimport.dll is missing, not necessarily the DLL itself. Repair the host application and investigate its documented runtime requirements.
What if the error remains after reinstalling?
Confirm that you reinstalled the same application and architecture named by the failing executable. Then inspect the application’s crash or startup log, antivirus history, permissions, controlled-folder access, and the exact path requested by the executable. Contact the application vendor with that information if the clean installation still fails.
Is the file malware?
The error alone does not prove malware. Verify the application installation path and the file’s provenance. If antivirus quarantined it and you cannot confirm it belongs to a trusted application installation, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application.
