windows.applicationmodel.store.dll is a genuine Windows system component used by Store-related Windows Runtime APIs. If it is missing or will not load, repair Windows and the Microsoft Store rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an unofficial site.
What this file actually does
windows.applicationmodel.store.dll supports the Windows.ApplicationModel.Store namespace. That Windows Runtime API provides Store-related functions such as application listings, licensing, trials, and in-app purchases for UWP applications. Microsoft documents the namespace as a Windows component available beginning with Windows 10 build 10240.

Microsoft update documentation lists the file in both x86 and x64 forms for Windows 8.1 and later. The exact location and version depend on your Windows edition, architecture, servicing level, and update history. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system files. The folder name does not mean that System32 contains 32-bit files.

The related Windows.ApplicationModel.Store API is now considered older API surface. Microsoft recommends Windows.Services.Store for newer applications targeting supported Windows 10 releases and later, but an older Store-dependent app may still use this component.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | What it usually means | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because windows.applicationmodel.store.dll is missing” | The protected file may be missing or corrupted | Run DISM, then SFC |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because … was not found” | Windows or an app cannot resolve the component | Repair Windows and update the app |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing | Run DISM/SFC and check the affected app |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | The file or a dependency may be damaged, mismatched, or replaced | Do not overwrite it manually; repair the component store |
| Microsoft Store will not open | Store cache, package, update, or Windows component trouble | Run wsreset.exe, then repair Store |
| One Store app will not start | That app may be damaged even though Windows is healthy | Repair, reset, or reinstall the app |
| The file was quarantined | Security software removed a file it considered suspicious | Verify quarantine details and run a full scan |
| The error began after manual file replacement | The copy may not match your build or architecture | Use System Restore or DISM/SFC |
Fix 1: Reset the Microsoft Store cache
Use this when Microsoft Store itself will not open, opens briefly and closes, or shows Store-related errors.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
cmd
wsreset.exe
- Press Enter.
- Wait while Windows resets the Store cache. A blank Command Prompt window may appear temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library and then Get updates.
Install any pending Windows updates before testing again:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
The repair worked if Microsoft Store opens and the affected application launches without the DLL message. If the Store still fails, continue with the Store repair options and Windows component repair below.
Fix 2: Repair or reset Microsoft Store
Windows can repair the Store package without immediately deleting its local data.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the Store.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset removes the Store app’s local data and may require Store-related sign-in or settings to be initialized again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Select Microsoft Store.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart and test.
- If necessary, return to the page and select Reset.
If Microsoft Store is not present at all, do not assume that windows.applicationmodel.store.dll is missing. The Store may be unavailable because of Windows edition, account configuration, or organization policy. On a work-managed computer, check with the administrator before changing app or policy settings.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary fix for a missing, deleted, or corrupted copy of the DLL. DISM repairs the Windows component source first, and SFC then checks protected system files against that source.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption it could not repair. A successful repair is confirmed by the original application launching normally after the restart, not merely by a command reaching 100 percent.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation or repair source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options documented by Microsoft. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from another computer.

Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows the repair issues it identifies; its repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required. For an app-specific failure, reinstalling that application remains the definitive fix.
Fix 4: Repair, reset, or reinstall the affected app
If Microsoft Store works but one Store application does not, the app package may be the damaged layer.
First try repair:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
If Repair fails, use Reset on the same page. Reset can remove the application’s local data, saved preferences, or sign-in state, so use it after Repair.
You can also reinstall from Microsoft Store:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find the application.
- Select Install or the download button.
- Wait for installation to complete.
- Launch the application again.
If the app is not listed in the Store, obtain its installer from the software vendor’s official support or download page. Do not copy windows.applicationmodel.store.dll into the application folder. That can hide the immediate message while leaving the Windows component damaged and can create a version conflict later.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine safely
A missing file can result from security software removing or quarantining it, but the file name alone does not prove that the detection was a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries involving the file or the affected application.
- Check the detection name, file path, and publisher information.
- Restore the file only when you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed Windows file and the detection is a false positive.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection.
- After the scan, run DISM followed by SFC again.
If the file was found outside a normal Windows system directory, treat that as a reason for additional investigation rather than automatically restoring it. If antivirus reports active malware, follow the security product’s removal instructions first.
Fix 6: Check architecture and Windows build
Do not choose a DLL because it has the newest-looking version number.
Windows has separate 32-bit and 64-bit system components. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the 32-bit copy through Windows system redirection, while a 64-bit application uses the 64-bit component. These copies are not interchangeable.
The file has appeared in multiple Windows versions and builds, including examples such as 10.0.14393.0, 10.0.17763.914, and 10.0.18362.x. Those examples are not a universal current version list. File size and version must match the Windows build being repaired.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Review System type.
To check the Windows build:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
cmd
winver
- Press Enter.
Use this information when checking update status or selecting an official Windows repair source. Never replace a protected file in System32 or SysWOW64 by hand.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 windows.applicationmodel.store.dll
There is no evidence that this Windows Runtime component should be manually registered. The command may return an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” and even a different registration result would not repair a missing or corrupted protected Windows file.

Fix 8: Check Windows Features and Device Manager only when relevant
Turning optional Windows Features on or off does not normally restore this DLL. You can still check whether a broader Windows feature change caused the problem:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review recent changes.
- Leave features at their required state unless you know which feature the affected application needs.
- Restart if you make a controlled change.
Device Manager is relevant only if the Store-dependent program began failing with other hardware or driver symptoms:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the application.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
A driver update does not normally repair windows.applicationmodel.store.dll, so do not use Device Manager as the primary fix. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver versions and show what it identifies; driver installation through the full version is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected app.

Fix 9: Restore Windows after manual deletion or replacement
If you deliberately deleted, renamed, or replaced the file, use a restore point from before that change.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
cmd
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs, but normally does not remove personal files. It may not be available on every PC, and it can affect applications installed after the selected restore point.
If no suitable restore point exists, run DISM and SFC. If those tools cannot restore the component, perform a Windows repair reinstall using Microsoft installation media or Windows recovery options. Back up important files first.
Fix 10: Escalate to Windows recovery
Use recovery options when the problem affects multiple Windows components, DISM and SFC cannot repair the image, or Windows became unstable after file replacement.
The least disruptive suitable option is generally System Restore. A repair reinstall is appropriate when Windows itself needs to be refreshed while preserving as much configuration as the selected method allows. Reset this PC is more disruptive and may remove applications and settings, so use it only after backing up personal data and trying less destructive repairs.
If only one application fails while Windows Store and other apps work, reinstall that application instead of resetting Windows.
Is it safe to download this DLL?
Avoid random DLL download websites. An arbitrary copy can contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. Copying it into an app directory also leaves the protected Windows component unresolved.
The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, System Restore, Microsoft recovery media, and the official installer for the affected application. There is no verified Microsoft standalone windows.applicationmodel.store.dll redistributable download.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFAQ
Is windows.applicationmodel.store.dll malware?
No. The file is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. A missing file is not evidence of malware, although an unexpected copy in an unusual directory should be investigated and scanned.
Does Microsoft Store install this DLL?
The component ships with Windows and supports Store-related Windows Runtime APIs. Microsoft Store repair may fix a package or cache problem, but it is not a replacement for DISM and SFC when the Windows file itself is damaged.
Should I reinstall Visual C++?
Not for this DLL. windows.applicationmodel.store.dll belongs to Windows Runtime Store infrastructure, not the Visual C++ Redistributable.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by that DLL cannot be loaded. Repair Windows first, then investigate the affected app if the error remains.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if DISM and SFC report no corruption?
Check whether only one Store app fails. Repair, reset, or reinstall that app, verify updates, inspect antivirus history, and check relevant Windows event logs. Do not keep downloading replacement DLLs.
Can I use the file from another PC?
No. Even if the other computer has the same file name, its Windows build, architecture, servicing state, permissions, or dependencies may differ. Use Windows repair sources that match the installed system.
