Before changing files, ports, or firewall settings, check whether MWO services are down. If the game, website, and forums fail together—or the official status page reports an incident—the realistic fix is to wait for service recovery and contact support if the outage persists.
Error 63 is commonly interpreted as a failure to reach or authenticate with the login service, while Error 64 generally appears after the client loses contact with MWO services. These are practical interpretations from older Piranha Games forum guidance and player reports, not definitions from a current public error-code glossary.

1. Check MWO server status first
Open the official MWO status page. You can also check the alternate MWO status page. The service categories include login services, the website, and North American, European, and Oceanic game servers.
Look for an active incident, but do not treat an “all systems operational” message as conclusive. A status page can lag behind an outage, while a regional route, authentication node, or ISP connection may still be failing.
#1 Best Overall
- Be your own weapon of war
- A World of Destruction - Level entire cities and decimate armies of enemy forces while piloting hundreds of unique BattleMech variants.
- Hunt The Truth - Pursue a path of interstellar intrigue in a quest for glory and revenge as the leader of a mercenary company reborn in the flames of destruction.
- The Merc Life - Manage the intricacies of running an expanding mercenary company - from the maintenance and acquisition of BattleMechs to the hiring of fellow MechWarrior allies.
- Fight Together - Fight alongside your friends with four-player PvE co-op support.
Strong signs of a service-side problem include:
- The MWO website and forums fail as well as the game.
- Several players report Error 63 or 64 at the same time.
- The issue affects more than one computer or internet connection.
- The error began suddenly after MWO had been working normally.
- The status page lists an incident or recent maintenance.
If the game and website fail on multiple networks, stop reinstalling and changing router settings. Wait briefly, monitor the status page and official announcements, then contact Piranha Games support if access does not return.
2. Restart the complete connection chain
- Close MWO completely.
- Exit Steam, then launch it again.
- Restart Windows.
- Power-cycle the modem and router. Wait about 30 seconds before reconnecting them.
- Try logging in to mwomercs.com.
- Launch MWO again after the connection and services are available.
A player report specifically mentions restarting Steam and synchronizing Windows time as possible remedies. That is anecdotal, not an official guaranteed fix, but both steps are low-risk.
3. Correct Windows date and time
Authentication can fail when the system clock is substantially wrong. In Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically if appropriate, then select Sync now.
Retry MWO after synchronization. Correcting the clock will not resolve a server outage, but it can remove a local authentication problem.
4. Verify MWO files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click MechWarrior Online and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then relaunch the game.
Verification can repair missing or corrupted local files. It cannot fix an authentication outage, an ISP route, a server incident, or an account problem. Do not treat it as a guaranteed Error 63 or 64 fix.
5. Check firewall, antivirus, VPNs, and overlays
Firewall, antivirus, VPN, DNS-filtering, and traffic-filtering software can interfere with patching or stable connections. Use an application allow-list rather than permanently disabling protection.
- Add the MWO launcher and game executable to the firewall’s allowed-app list.
- Add an antivirus exclusion only if you trust the installation and know which executable is being blocked.
- Temporarily exit VPNs, web-protection tools, DNS filters, traffic shapers, and packet-filtering utilities.
- Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, and similar overlays if the error occurs during launch or match loading.
- If you disable antivirus or a firewall for testing, re-enable it immediately afterward.
A VPN is not a dependable solution. It can help compare routes, but it may add latency, trigger security checks, or make the connection less stable.
6. Reset Windows networking
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset
Restart Windows when the commands finish. The commands clear the local DNS cache, drop and renew the DHCP lease, and reset the Winsock catalog. The release command temporarily disconnects the PC until renewal, and the Winsock reset requires a restart.
These commands can repair a local networking state, but they cannot repair MWO’s authentication service or a server outage. Avoid registry cleaners and downloadable “network repair” utilities.
7. Test DNS, Ethernet, and another network
Only change DNS when name resolution appears suspect—for example, when the MWO domain fails to resolve, resolves inconsistently, or works on another connection. First flush the DNS cache and record the original settings.

Possible public DNS resolvers include:
- Google Public DNS:
8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4 - Cloudflare DNS:
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1
DNS changes are reversible and may help with name resolution, but they cannot fix a failed authentication backend. Managed, school, workplace, parental-control, and some ISP networks may override custom DNS.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Replace Wi-Fi with Ethernet if possible.
- Try a phone hotspot briefly, keeping mobile-data charges and latency in mind.
- Test the MWO website as well as the game.
- Try another household connection or ISP if available.
| Result | Likely implication |
|---|---|
| Game and website fail everywhere | Service, account, or authentication problem |
| Hotspot works but home internet fails | Router, ISP route, DNS, filtering, or NAT issue |
| Website works but the game fails | Client files, firewall, launcher, or local installation issue |
| Another PC works on the same network | Local PC, security software, profile, or installation issue |
| Error appears after sleep or resume | Possible local network state, Steam session, clock, or driver issue |
A failed ping alone does not prove that MWO is down: servers may block ICMP, and game traffic can use different routes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you forward MWO ports?
Older Piranha Games forum guidance mentioned TCP ports 45461 and 45464, plus UDP traffic in an approximate 21000–30000 range. This is legacy information from forum discussions, not a verified complete or universal port requirement for 2026. One historical post also noted that the UDP destination could vary between matches.
Ordinary outbound game connections usually do not require manual port forwarding. First allow the application through the firewall and test another network. Do not expose a broad UDP range based solely on an old guide; ask current support before making risky router changes.
Collect logs and contact support
The current MWO support page lists [email protected] and support hours of 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Pacific, Monday through Friday, excluding Canadian holidays.

When to stop troubleshooting
Stop cycling through local fixes when the status page reports an incident, the game and website fail together, other players report the same error, or the problem persists across multiple networks. The same applies when verification, router restarts, DNS testing, and security checks make no difference—or when the account cannot authenticate on the website.
At that point, additional reinstalls and port changes are unlikely to help. Wait for service recovery or send support the timestamp, symptoms, logs, and network test results needed to investigate the failure.
