To run Super Smash Bros. Melee mods on a PC, you generally need a Dolphin-based launcher (most commonly Slippi), your own clean NTSC-U/J 1.02 Melee ISO, a controller, and enough local storage for the untouched game and each modded build. A GameCube controller is the traditional choice, but it needs a compatible USB adapter. An SSD or M.2 drive can improve loading and reduce storage-related problems, yet it is an optional upgrade rather than a universal requirement.

Do I need Dolphin for Melee mods?
Yes, in most PC workflows you need Dolphin or a Dolphin-based launcher because the game is being emulated. Slippi is the standard competitive route described by Melee.tv and Project Slippi, and it adds controller configuration, replay features, and online functionality around a Dolphin build.
“Dolphin” is not always a separate download that you configure manually. A project may detect an existing Slippi installation, ship a tailored build, or provide a launcher that handles the emulator arguments for you. SSBM Nucleus, for example, uses Slippi Dolphin to detect the installation, read a clean ISO, and build selected mods. LYLAT likewise distributes a Melee build and lists related supported builds such as Akaneia, Beyond Melee, Midnight Melee, and 1.03.

Mixing emulator versions can produce missing menus, incompatible patches, or controller behavior that the mod author did not support.
Which Melee ISO do Melee mods use?
The broadly supported target is a clean NTSC-U or NTSC-J 1.02 Melee ISO. Project Slippi lists NTSC-U/J 1.02 support, and SSBM Nucleus asks for a clean, unmodified NTSC 1.02 ISO on first launch. “Clean” means an unpatched dump of the game: no previous mod, texture replacement, cheat code, or compression wrapper.
You must supply the game image from your own game copy. Project Slippi states: “We do not provide a Melee NTSC 1.02 ISO and we cannot help you find one, you will need to acquire one yourself.” Do not rely on download links offered by random forums, and do not treat a modded download as a substitute for the source file.
Keep the vanilla ISO read-only in practice by storing it in a clearly named folder and making a backup before you begin. A launcher can extract data from it without changing it. If a tool asks to patch an ISO directly, make a duplicate first and verify which file it will modify.

Clean ISO versus modded ISO
A clean ISO is the stable starting point that matches the revision expected by Slippi or the mod. A modded ISO is a newly generated game image containing altered stages, characters, rules, graphics, or code. They are not interchangeable: using an already patched ISO as the source can cause a patcher to fail or create a build with unknown changes.
Nucleus says it does not modify the source ISO while it builds a selected mod. Diet Melee’s instructions similarly describe generating a new ISO rather than replacing the vanilla copy. Keep names explicit—for example, Melee-NTSC-1.02-clean.iso and a separate folder for each generated build—so an update cannot accidentally overwrite the original.
Can I use a GameCube controller on PC?
Yes. A traditional GameCube controller is the recommended input for players who want Melee’s original stick, button, and trigger layout. Melee.tv advises favoring first-party Nintendo controllers over unknown third-party models; arcade-style controllers are another option for players who prefer that format.
A GameCube pad does not plug directly into a typical PC. You need a compatible USB adapter, then the adapter must be visible to Dolphin. Project Slippi’s setup guidance covers placing supported adapters in Wii U/Switch mode where applicable, installing or enabling the required driver, and checking the device in Dolphin’s controller menu.

- Install the required driver if Windows does not recognize it automatically.
- Open Dolphin’s controller configuration and select the adapter as the GameCube port device.
- Press every button, move both sticks, and squeeze both triggers to confirm that the correct inputs and ranges appear.
- Save the profile so each modded build uses the same mapping.
Project Slippi describes approximately 125 Hz as normal adapter polling. Some supported adapters can be overclocked to as much as 1000 Hz, but that is an optional configuration choice, not a requirement for launching a mod. If an overclock causes disconnects or erratic inputs, return to the documented default.
How much storage do Melee mods take?
There is no single storage minimum for every mod. Plan for the clean vanilla ISO, the launcher and its cache, and one separate generated ISO or build for each mod you intend to keep. Projects that include high-resolution textures or multiple variants can require additional working space while they unpack and rebuild files.

Do not delete the clean ISO after a successful build. A future patch, repair, or rollback may need that exact source revision. Keeping separate folders also prevents one mod’s files from being loaded accidentally by another.
An SSD or M.2 drive is an optional performance improvement. Melee.tv recommends placing the Slippi installation and Melee ISO on the fastest available drive and warns that a compressed ISO can cause problems. Moving files to an SSD is therefore a sensible troubleshooting step when loading is unusually slow or a tool cannot read the image, but it is not a universal minimum specification.
What is the safest installation order?
Use this sequence for a new setup. The labels in a mod’s documentation take priority if they differ.
- Install the documented launcher. Download Slippi or the mod’s specified Dolphin-based package from its official project page. Complete its first-run setup before adding custom builds.
- Prepare your source image. Obtain your own NTSC-U/J 1.02 Melee ISO and confirm that it is clean and unmodified. Keep a backup outside the working folder.
- Point the launcher at the source. In Slippi or the mod tool, browse to the clean ISO when prompted. Do not select an ISO that already contains another mod.
- Connect and verify the controller. Attach the GameCube adapter, install its driver, select the correct device in Dolphin, and test all controls.
- Build or launch the mod. Follow the project’s exact patcher, launcher, or build instructions. If it generates a new ISO, choose a separate destination and give it a descriptive name.
- Test the correct build offline first. Confirm that the expected character roster, stages, rules, or menus appear before attempting online play. This catches a wrong-revision or wrong-file selection early.
- Back up working files. Copy the clean ISO and any important generated build to another local drive before experimenting with updates.
Should I use a launcher workflow or an ISO patcher?
Choose based on compatibility, file safety, online support, and how much maintenance you want to handle. Neither workflow is universally better.

Some projects can support both approaches, so read the current instructions for the specific release rather than assuming a method from another mod.
Online play is a separate compatibility question. A build must integrate with Slippi or another supported matchmaking route, and its revision, rules, and code changes must be accepted by that service. A mod that launches perfectly offline is not automatically suitable for ranked or regular netplay.

What operating system does the setup require?
Project Slippi’s current beta FAQ lists Windows 10 or newer, macOS Sonoma 14.0 or newer, and Ubuntu 22.04 or newer with additional packages. Those versions describe the beta build covered by that FAQ; they should not be presented as universal requirements for every Dolphin-derived mod.
Before installing, check the mod’s release notes for its supported operating system and any bundled runtime or package requirements. On Linux, missing packages can prevent the launcher from opening even when Dolphin itself runs. On macOS, security prompts and permissions may require you to approve the application before the first launch.
What PC hardware do I need?
The reviewed documentation does not establish one CPU, GPU, or RAM minimum for every Melee mod. Requirements vary with the Dolphin build, graphics enhancements, texture packs, operating system, and the mod’s own code. A standard vanilla setup is less demanding than a project that replaces textures or adds heavy visual effects.
Start with conservative settings rather than buying hardware based on a generic specification:
- Use Dolphin’s 1x internal resolution or other 1x enhancements first.
- Disable custom textures until the base game and mod launch reliably.
- Close unnecessary background applications that compete for CPU, memory, or disk access.
- Keep the ISO and Slippi installation on a fast local drive, preferably an SSD if a slower disk is clearly causing stalls.
- Increase visual enhancements one at a time, returning to the last stable setting if a change introduces audio, frame-pacing, or loading problems.
This sequence distinguishes an emulator configuration issue from a mod compatibility issue without inventing a hardware baseline that the sources do not support.

- Verify the revision. Confirm that the mod expects NTSC-U/J 1.02, NTSC 1.03, or another explicitly named build. A 1.03-targeted project cannot be assumed to work with a 1.02 source.
- Return to a clean source. Remove the patched ISO from the source slot and select your untouched backup. Rebuild the mod to a new destination.
- Use the requested launcher. If the project names Slippi Dolphin, do not substitute a random Dolphin nightly or an older fork.
- Check paths and permissions. Avoid moving files while a build is running, and give the launcher access to both the source and output folders.
- Remove compression. If the image is compressed and the guide warns against it, restore an uncompressed copy and retry.
- Lower graphics settings. Return to 1x enhancements and disable custom textures to separate performance problems from patching problems.
If the vanilla game runs but only one mod fails, the issue is likely specific to that mod’s build instructions or release. Consult its current documentation before changing system-wide Dolphin settings.
What common mistakes should I avoid?
- Using an unofficial ISO download. Slippi does not supply game files; use an image made from your own copy.
- Overwriting the vanilla ISO. A clean source is the easiest recovery path when a patch fails or a mod is updated.
- Assuming every mod targets 1.02. Check whether the project requires a special build, 1.03, or a bundled image.
- Buying an SSD before diagnosing the issue. Faster storage can help, but it is not a universal requirement.
- Ignoring adapter mode and drivers. Dolphin may open normally while the controller remains invisible or mis-mapped.
- Taking a build online without checking support. Offline launch success does not prove that a mod is compatible with Slippi matchmaking.
