It launched in Early Access on February 5, 2026. Based on the current feature list and early reviews, it is most appealing if you want challenging squad tactics and enjoy shaping a force through equipment and deployment decisions. It is a less straightforward choice if you need a finished campaign or want the strategic layer to be as deep as the battles. The impressions below come from reviews of specific 2026 builds, not independent testing of the current version.
What kind of game is MENACE?
MENACE puts you in command of a strike force responding to an alien threat. Between missions, you train and equip infantry; in battle, you deploy squads alongside heavier units such as tanks and mechs. Missions can ask you to destroy targets, hold ground, attack bases, or rescue civilians. The official Steam page describes the game as single-player and currently in Early Access.

Its core appeal is tactical combat rather than a sprawling strategy simulation. Squad composition and loadouts matter, but so does where each unit goes and how it supports the others once a fight begins.

How do MENACE’s battles work?
Strategy and Wargaming’s February 5, 2026 review describes combat built around alternating unit activations and action points. Units use cover and suppression, so positioning affects whether a squad can advance, fire effectively, or constrain the enemy. Game Atlas also highlights suppression and squad-based firing in its review, marked reviewed June 22, 2026.

Those systems create the kind of decisions tactical-game players look for: which unit to activate, where to move it, and how to set up the rest of the force. Equipment variety adds another layer before deployment. These are observations from the cited reviews of their respective builds, not a claim that every encounter has equal variety or that those builds match the latest version.
What is included in Early Access?
According to Overhype Studios’ Early Access description on the Steam store page, checked October 4, 2026, the playable version includes 50 unique procedurally generated mission types, used to construct operations across three biomes or planets and four enemy factions. These are developer-provided feature counts, not independently audited totals.

The store description also separates that current content from additions the developers plan to make: more planets, biomes, mission types, squad leaders, equipment, events, character interactions, and the full story. Planned content is not a guarantee of what will arrive or when. The same page showed an Alien Update dated August 20, 2026, and a Mission Selection Overhaul developer diary dated September 11, 2026, evidence of ongoing development at the time it was checked.
What do reviews say about the strengths and drawbacks?
The clearest positive in the cited coverage is tactical combat. Strategy and Wargaming praised the battles and breadth of equipment, while Game8’s February 2026 review also liked the tactical play. Their assessments are subjective and apply to the builds they reviewed; they are useful signals, not a consensus verdict on the current build.
Rank #3
- Offers new, streamlined form of gameplay
- Multiple paths of victory offer unique strategy opportunity
- Expansive game engages both new and experienced players
The reported drawbacks point to different kinds of risk for buyers:
- Battle readability: Strategy and Wargaming criticized how clearly cover is communicated. Game Atlas cited UI and tooltip issues.
- Mission variety over time: Strategy and Wargaming raised the possibility that objectives could feel repetitive, despite the developer’s stated mission-type count.
- Campaign depth: Strategy and Wargaming found the strategic layer comparatively light. That matters if campaign management is a major reason you play this genre.
- Learning curve and narrative: Game8 described the game as difficult even at a low setting and found the story less engaging than the gameplay.
- Convenience and onboarding: Game Atlas criticized the limited tutorial and lack of mid-mission saving.
These are dated review judgments, not verified defects in the current version. Check current player feedback and the store’s latest update notes if a particular issue would determine your purchase.
Rank #4
- Simple rules.
- Short play time.
- Expansion included in the box!
- Awarded best 2 player game by Tom Vasel, and nominated for best 2 player game in Golden Geek Awards.
- Solo mode!
Who should buy MENACE in Early Access?
| Your priority | How MENACE may fit |
|---|---|
| Turn-based squad combat | A promising fit if you enjoy tactical positioning, suppression, and choosing how squads and equipment work together. |
| Force-building and loadouts | Potentially appealing: training and equipping infantry is part of the loop, with the developer listing further equipment and squad-leader additions as planned. |
| A deep campaign layer | Approach cautiously. Strategy and Wargaming described the strategic layer as comparatively light in its February 2026 review. |
| A finished story and complete feature set | Wait if unfinished content is a deal-breaker: the game is in Early Access, and the full story and other additions are listed as planned. |
| Clear onboarding and uninterrupted runs | Consider the review caveats about the tutorial, UI and mid-mission saving, while remembering that those judgments concern particular builds. |
For players comparing it with XCOM-style tactics games, focus less on a presumed one-to-one match and more on what you want from the genre: MENACE’s cited strengths are squad combat and equipment decisions, while the campaign layer and Early Access status deserve closer scrutiny.
