Some third-party listings report an older 32-bit file, a Korean language resource, a 2002 copyright, version 1.0.0.1, and a size around 152 KB. Treat those details as unverified metadata, not as an authoritative specification for the file on your computer.

Common messages include:
- “messagedll.dll not found.”
- “The file messagedll.dll is missing.”
- “Cannot find messagedll.dll.”
- “Error loading messagedll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because messagedll.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in messagedll.dll.”
The exact wording matters. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that messagedll.dll exists but another DLL that it depends on is missing.
1. Find the program requesting the DLL
Before repairing Windows, establish which program is calling the file.
If the error appears when launching a program
Look at the title bar and the text around the error. Note the application name, then check its installation folder:
- Press
Windows+E. - Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target path.
- Open that folder and look for
messagedll.dll.
Do not replace the file just because it is absent. The missing file may be one part of an incomplete installation, and the application may require an exact build.
If the error appears during startup
An old application may have been removed while its startup entry remained.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, when available.
- Record the program name and folder before disabling the entry.
Also check scheduled tasks:
- Press the
Windowskey. - Type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch from the same folder or reference an uninstalled program.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see the executable it starts.
For a more detailed record, open Event Viewer from the Start menu and review Windows Logs → Application around the time of the error.
If the startup entry points to software you intentionally removed, uninstall its remaining entry through Settings → Apps → Installed apps when possible. Do not delete arbitrary registry entries or folders until you have confirmed which application owns them.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely fix for messagedll.dll.
Use the application’s repair function
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
Some desktop applications instead provide repair controls in Control Panel:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if available.
- Complete the installer prompts.
For a game or launcher, open its library, select the game, and look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similar command. The exact label depends on the launcher.
Restart Windows and test the application. If it starts normally, the repaired installer restored the expected file and its related dependencies.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up the application’s saved data if its vendor documents where saves are stored.
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer, publisher, or official launcher.
- Temporarily close other installers and applications.
- Run the installer normally. Use Run as administrator only when the vendor’s installer requires it.
- Launch the application once the installation completes.
If the program was copied from an old computer, restored from a backup, or moved to another drive, install it again rather than copying only messagedll.dll. A DLL can depend on files, registry settings, configuration data, and runtimes that were not moved with it.
Recommended Free Tools
If a failed update caused the error, reinstalling the latest official build is preferable to restoring an isolated DLL from an old backup.
3. Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software may have quarantined or removed the file. This is especially relevant if the program worked previously and the error began after a security scan or cleanup.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection associated with the application folder or
messagedll.dll. - Record the detected path and detection name.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the application’s official installer.
- The parent application is one you intentionally installed.
- The original path matches the application’s installation directory.
- You can verify the file’s publisher or origin.
- The antivirus vendor’s detection is reasonably likely to be a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring quarantined files can expose the device if the detection is genuine. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, stop restoring it. Reinstall the parent application from its official source and submit the file to the security vendor for review if you believe it is a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an unknown DLL to load.
4. Check the file’s path, architecture, and signature
A legitimate application DLL usually belongs in that application’s own folder or one of its documented subfolders.
If a copy exists:
- Right-click
messagedll.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record its location and size.
- Open Details and review the description, product name, version, and language.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
A blank publisher, placeholder product name, or missing signature does not automatically prove malware. It does mean the file’s origin is not established.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs a 32-bit DLL in the application’s directory. Do not assume that a file described online as “32-bit” is compatible with your program. The correct build must come from the application’s own installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit in Task Manager:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Compare the application architecture with the DLL and its dependencies.
Reinstalling the application is the reliable way to obtain the matching copy.
5. Check for a missing dependency
If messagedll.dll is present but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be absent or damaged.
Use these clues:
- A normal “file missing” message often means the named DLL itself is absent.
- “The specified module could not be found” can indicate a missing dependent DLL.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located” often indicates the wrong or incompatible version.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, wrong architecture, or an incompatible old binary.
The safest way to resolve a dependency is to rerun the application’s official installer or use its repair function. If the vendor documents a required runtime, install that runtime only from its official source.
Visual C++ runtime
Do not assume messagedll.dll is part of Visual C++. If the application installer specifically reports a Visual C++ dependency, install the package architecture required by the application:
A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing the x64 package alone may not satisfy a 32-bit program.
Restart Windows after installing the runtime and test the application again. If the application still reports messagedll.dll, return to the parent application’s repair or reinstall process.

6. Update or reinstall related drivers only when indicated
A driver is not the likely home of messagedll.dll, and replacing graphics, audio, chipset, or storage drivers will not normally restore an application-private DLL. Consider driver repair only if the affected program also crashes with graphics, audio, display, or hardware errors.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the hardware category associated with the failure.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Choose Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same tab and choose Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise, download the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
Manually hunting through several driver packages can make it difficult to tell which change affected the application. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns messagedll.dll.
Restart Windows after a driver change. If the DLL error remains unchanged and the application has no hardware-related symptoms, stop pursuing drivers and repair the application instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Repair Windows components when broader corruption is suspected
Because there is no reliable evidence that messagedll.dll is a protected Windows component, DISM and SFC are secondary checks. Use them when multiple Windows applications fail, Windows features are damaged, or the problem followed disk corruption or a failed system update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst install pending Windows updates and restart:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated terminal:
- Press the
Windowskey. - Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete and test the application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component files that SFC uses. These commands repair protected Windows components; they will not normally recreate an unrelated third-party messagedll.dll.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing identified system issues; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the application remains the correct fix when the missing DLL belongs to that program.
8. Use Windows Features only for a documented requirement
Some old applications require optional Windows components, but enabling random features will not restore messagedll.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If the application’s documentation specifically names a Windows feature:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Enable only the documented feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Legacy software may also require compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version only when the vendor recommends it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Compatibility mode cannot supply a missing application DLL. If the program is obsolete and no supported installer exists, use the vendor’s documented legacy installer or consider a supported replacement.
9. Try System Restore for a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began directly after a driver, application, or Windows change and a restore point exists.
- Press the
Windowskey. - Type Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system files, installed applications, drivers, and settings. It does not provide a verified standalone copy of messagedll.dll, and it can remove changes made after the selected restore point.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A standalone DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong build, or a modified file. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the application or may leave the actual missing dependency unresolved.
Do not trust a download page’s claimed version, hash, size, “clean” label, or download count as proof of authenticity. The safe sources are:
- The application developer’s official installer.
- The application’s official launcher repair or verification function.
- An official Microsoft runtime page when the application identifies that runtime.
- The computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page for drivers.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general DLL drop locations. Copying an application DLL there can create conflicts, permissions problems, and security risks. It also does not repair the application’s missing files or configuration.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not run regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that messagedll.dll is a COM or ActiveX DLL.
Do not use this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 messagedll.dll
If the application’s official documentation explicitly says that this specific DLL must be registered, use an elevated Command Prompt, change to the folder containing the vendor-supplied file, and follow those instructions. Otherwise, an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found is expected and registration is not the solution.
If the error continues
Work through these checks:
- Test the application under another Windows account.
- If it works there, the original profile or per-user installation may be damaged.
- Confirm that the error occurs for every user or only one account.
- Uninstall the parent application completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only confirmed leftover folders belonging to that application.
- Reinstall from the official source.
- Check whether antivirus removes the file again.
- If the software is obsolete, look for a supported replacement or vendor-documented legacy installation method.
If the error appears only at startup and the original program is gone, disable the confirmed orphaned startup item or scheduled task instead of restoring the DLL.
FAQ
Is messagedll.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is. It appears more likely to be an application-private or localization DLL associated with older software.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix it?
Only if the affected application or its installer identifies Visual C++ as a missing dependency. Visual C++ is not a definitive fix for messagedll.dll.
Should I download a 32-bit copy?
No. A 32-bit label does not prove that the file matches your application. Obtain the file through the application’s official installer.
Why does the error say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
The application may be missing another dependency, or the existing file may be damaged or incompatible. Repairing the application is safer than replacing DLLs individually.
Can SFC restore messagedll.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while messagedll.dll has not been identified as one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling a program?
A startup entry or scheduled task may still point to the removed application. Identify and disable the confirmed orphaned entry rather than downloading the DLL.
Is the file malware?
Its unclear provenance is not proof that it is malicious. Verify its original path, installer source, signature, and antivirus detection before restoring or allowing it.
What is the definitive fix?
Identify the program requesting messagedll.dll, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer or launcher.
