Meta Quest 3 Eye Tracking: What It Can—and Cannot—Do

The standard Meta Quest 3 does not have built-in eye tracking. It cannot measure your pupils, eye rotation, gaze point, blinks, fixations, or per-eye orientation through its native hardware or Horizon OS APIs. Its tracking system follows the headset, controllers, hands, and surrounding room—not the user’s eyes.

That distinction matters because Quest 3 supports advanced passthrough computer vision and several forms of foveated rendering, both of which are sometimes incorrectly described as eye tracking. They are not. True gaze-based interaction, eye analytics, eye-driven avatar animation, and eye-tracked foveated rendering require hardware such as Quest Pro or an external eye-tracking accessory.

What Quest 3 actually tracks

Quest 3’s native tracking capabilities include:

  • Inside-out headset tracking
  • Controller tracking
  • Hand tracking
  • Direct Touch and pointer-based interaction
  • Full-color passthrough
  • Spatial and room understanding
  • Access to forward-facing RGB cameras for approved computer-vision applications

These features let the headset understand its position, controllers, hands, and physical environment. They do not tell it where the wearer’s eyes are pointing.

Why there is no eye-tracking option in Quest 3

Quest 3 has no native Eye Tracking setting, calibration screen, permission, or user-facing toggle. A settings path such as Settings → Movement Tracking → Eye Tracking → Calibrate Eye Tracking does not apply to the standard Quest 3. Users searching for that menu will not find it because the headset lacks the inward-facing cameras, infrared illumination, and related sensing hardware required for integrated ocular tracking.

Meta’s product announcement describes “face and eye tracking” as a Quest Pro feature, while presenting Quest 3 separately around passthrough, mixed reality, higher performance, and hand tracking. Meta’s Quest 3 announcement makes that product distinction clear.

A software update cannot create true eye tracking without the necessary sensors. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has also explained that adding eye tracking externally would require cameras and illumination positioned around the eyes, along with changes to the eye-cup area. UploadVR’s report on Meta’s explanation provides that hardware context.

Can Quest 3 control menus with your eyes?

No. The Quest 3 system interface cannot natively select an item simply because you look at it. Native interaction uses controllers, hand tracking, Direct Touch, head- or controller-directed pointers, and voice features where supported.

An individual application could estimate attention using head direction, hand position, object recognition, or interaction history. That can approximate what a user may be attending to, but it is not ocular gaze measurement. Head direction and eye direction are not interchangeable: a person can look toward the edge of their field of view without turning their head.

Passthrough Camera API is not eye tracking

Quest 3’s forward-facing cameras are useful for mixed-reality and computer-vision applications, but they face outward toward the room. Meta’s Passthrough Camera API documentation describes access to those cameras for applications that analyze the environment and physical actions.

The API does not provide:

  • Pupil position
  • Eye rotation
  • Binocular gaze
  • Fixation events
  • Blink detection
  • Per-eye gaze rays
  • Eye-tracking calibration data

For example, an app might attempt to determine whether someone is looking toward a painting by combining camera imagery with head pose and scene understanding. That is an environmental inference, not a measurement of the user’s eyes.

Passthrough Camera API version details

Camera access on Quest headsets became available beginning with Horizon OS v74. The API supports Quest 3 and Quest 3S, requires passthrough to be enabled, and requires either android.permission.CAMERA or horizonos.permission.HEADSET_CAMERA.

Horizon OS v83 added Unreal support and introduced a 1280×1280 camera resolution alongside 1280×960. Meta documents approximately 20–40 ms image-capture latency, roughly 1–2% GPU overhead per streamed camera, about 45 MB of memory overhead, a 60 Hz data rate, and a maximum resolution of 1280×1280. The internal format is YUV420.

The camera texture does not cover the entire field of view visible through passthrough. Even the newer square resolution covers less than the full passthrough view, so developers should not assume that every visible object is represented in the camera feed.

Passthrough Camera API pitfalls for developers

  • Distorted colors after installation: After the first installation of a Camera API application following an OS flash, RGB channels may be reversed. Meta’s documented workaround is to reboot the headset.
  • No XR Simulator support: The API does not work in XR Simulator.
  • Resolution changes: Code that assumes only 1280×960 may break when 1280×1280 is available.
  • Unity camera selection: A parameterless WebCamTexture constructor—or setting both requested dimensions to zero—can select the highest available resolution. Explicitly choose a tested resolution or filter by aspect ratio.
  • Link limitation: Meta states that Android Camera API access is not supported over Link. Test camera-dependent applications natively on the headset.
  • Youth-account restrictions: Meta warns that some parent restrictions affecting camera API access are not applied when an app is installed through Meta Quest Developer Hub. This is a privacy and testing caveat, not an eye-tracking feature.

Quest 3 foveated rendering is not eye-tracked foveation

Quest 3 supports fixed foveated rendering and GPU-driven dynamic foveated rendering. Neither follows the wearer’s eyes.

Eye-tracked foveated rendering moves the highest-resolution region according to real-time gaze data. Quest 3 cannot do that natively because it has no gaze data. Its documented dynamic foveation responds to GPU utilization, changing the rendering quality distribution based on system load rather than eye position.

The Dynamic Foveated Rendering option is disabled by default. Meta also documents this API:

void UOculusXRFunctionLibrary::SetFoveatedRenderingLevel(
    EOculusXRFoveatedRenderingLevel level,
    bool isDynamic
)

These controls determine where rendering quality is allocated. They do not output gaze coordinates, fixation events, or eye orientation. See Meta’s foveated-rendering documentation for the documented behavior and settings.

Can you add eye tracking to Quest 3?

Yes, but only with external hardware. Third-party systems can attach an eye-tracking module to Quest 3 and process gaze data outside the headset’s native tracking stack.

For example, Pupil Labs documents a Neon module and Quest 3 mount. Such a setup may involve a physical mount, USB-C connection, companion computer, network communication, calibration, and application-specific Unity integration.

The accurate descriptions are:

  • External eye tracking for Quest 3
  • A third-party eye-tracking accessory used with Quest 3
  • Eye tracking added through external hardware

It is inaccurate to call this built-in Quest 3 eye tracking, native Quest 3 eye tracking, a Quest 3 firmware feature, or Meta eye tracking on Quest 3. External hardware is also not equivalent to the integrated sensors and platform support of a headset designed with eye tracking, such as Quest Pro.

Common Quest 3 eye-tracking misunderstandings

“Quest 3 has infrared cameras, so it has eye tracking.”

Not necessarily. Infrared cameras can support headset, controller, or environmental tracking. Their presence does not prove that inward-facing cameras can observe pupils or calculate gaze. Meta’s documented camera API exposes forward-facing cameras, not eye cameras.

“Eye relief means eye tracking.”

No. Quest 3’s eye-relief adjustment changes the distance between the facial interface and lenses, primarily to accommodate glasses and fit differences. It is a mechanical and optical fit adjustment, not an eye sensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Dynamic foveation follows my eyes.”

No. On Quest 3, documented dynamic foveation responds to GPU utilization. Eye-tracked foveation requires real-time gaze sensing.

“A passthrough app knows exactly where I am looking.”

Usually not. It may estimate attention from head orientation, camera imagery, object recognition, or user behavior, but without external eye-tracking hardware it does not know the user’s actual ocular gaze.

What this means for players and developers

For players, Quest 3 cannot provide native gaze-based menu control, eye-driven avatar expressions, gaze analytics, or eye-tracked foveated graphics. For developers, the headset’s camera access can enable compelling environmental computer vision, but an application must not treat passthrough imagery as a substitute for eye-camera input.

If a project specifically requires gaze rays, per-eye orientation, pupil data, blink events, or calibration data, the practical choices are to target hardware with integrated eye tracking or add a compatible external module and build around its separate software stack. If the project only needs to understand the room, objects, or physical actions, Quest 3’s passthrough and computer-vision tools may be appropriate.
