Before you install your first game, set up your Meta Quest 3S so it is comfortable, tracks correctly, and does not turn passthrough into a false sense of security. This 30-step first-day and first-week checklist covers the setup mistakes that most often make a new headset confusing, uncomfortable, unsafe, or underused.
Before you install your first game, set up your Meta Quest 3S so it is comfortable, tracks correctly, and does not turn passthrough into a false sense of security. The first day is about more than pairing a headset. You need a reliable account and network, a correct fit, a safe boundary, working controllers, and a basic understanding of mixed reality. Once those are ready, the Quest 3S becomes much easier to use—and much less likely to leave you with headaches, tracking problems, or a library of apps you never actually enjoy.
What you need: A Meta Quest 3S, a compatible phone with the official Meta Quest mobile app, a reliable Wi-Fi connection, and a clear area where you can safely move.

Before you put on the Quest 3S
1. Charge the headset before setup
Give the headset a meaningful charge before beginning. Initial setup may involve account pairing, a system update, controller updates, boundary creation, and application downloads. Starting nearly empty can interrupt one of those steps at the worst time.

Assemble your VR display stand in just a few steps without any tools. It can also be quickly disassembled for easy storage when not in use.
Use the supplied or otherwise appropriate charging equipment, place the headset somewhere ventilated, and avoid leaving it where the lenses can face a window or direct sunlight. You do not need to wait for a particular percentage if you only want to inspect the device, but a proper first-day setup is less frustrating when it cannot be interrupted by a low battery.
2. Install or update the official Meta Quest mobile app
Install the official Meta Quest app on your phone and update it before pairing. The app is used for device setup and management, discovering applications, reviewing notifications, and casting the headset view to a phone or another supported screen. The current app name, supported phone operating systems, and exact setup flow can change, so follow the current instructions shown by Meta and in the app rather than an old screenshot.

3. Use the right Meta account
Sign in with the Meta account you intend to keep using for this headset. Confirm the email address and complete any security or verification prompts. Purchases and application ownership are tied to the account, so creating a second account by mistake can make your library, subscriptions, and device management unnecessarily confusing.
If the headset is for a child or is shared by a household, decide in advance which account will be the primary device account and review Meta’s current family and supervision options. Do not assume that changing the account later will move purchases between accounts.
4. Connect to dependable Wi-Fi
Use a stable home Wi-Fi network for initial setup. The headset may need network access for operating-system updates, application downloads, account services, casting, and cloud-connected features. A particular Wi-Fi standard is not mandatory based on the information available here, but a weak or congested connection can make setup appear stuck.

If possible, set up near your router, pause large downloads on other devices, and avoid using a guest network that blocks device-to-device communication if you plan to cast.
5. Finish updates before judging performance
Let the headset, controllers, and newly installed applications finish updating before deciding that the Quest 3S is slow or unreliable. A new unit can have several updates waiting. Keep it powered and connected to Wi-Fi while the process completes.
If an update appears stuck, first give it time and confirm the network and charge level. A restart may help with a temporary failure, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every update problem. If the same update repeatedly fails, use Meta’s current support and recovery instructions rather than repeatedly interrupting the installation.
Make the headset comfortable and clear
6. Adjust the top strap and side straps gradually
Loosen the straps before putting the headset on, then adjust the top strap and side straps in small steps. The headset should sit securely, with its weight distributed comfortably and the image centered when you look straight ahead. Tightening every strap as far as possible is not the goal; excessive pressure can cause facial discomfort and headaches.
Recommended Free Tools
Start by positioning the headset on your face, use the top strap to support its weight, and then make the side adjustments. Recheck the fit after a few minutes because the face interface can shift as you move.
7. Set the lens spacing for your eyes
Quest 3S uses a single display system with a physical lens-spacing adjustment. Move the lenses through their supported positions until text and menu edges look clear and comfortable. The display resolution is 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye, but that specification does not remove the need for a careful fit or guarantee that every part of the image will look equally sharp.
Adjust the headset on your face after changing lens spacing. If the center is clear but the image becomes blurry whenever the headset moves, improve the strap fit rather than simply tightening it harder.
8. Use the glasses spacer or compatible prescription inserts
If you wear glasses, use the included glasses spacer if your package has one and follow the current Quest instructions. Do not force spectacles against the headset lenses. Prescription inserts are optional accessories, not a requirement for every glasses wearer, and their compatibility must be checked specifically for Quest 3S before purchase.

Whether you use glasses, inserts, or neither, keep the headset lenses away from scratches and clean them only with a suitable soft lens cloth. Do not use household glass cleaner, paper towels, or abrasive fabric.
9. Start with short sessions
Use the first sessions to learn how the headset feels, not to prove how long you can wear it. Take regular breaks and stop if you experience eye strain, headache, nausea, dizziness, disorientation, or unusual fatigue. Sit down, remove the headset, and recover before trying again.
Do not treat discomfort as something you should simply push through. If symptoms persist, worsen, or concern you, stop using the headset and seek appropriate medical advice.
10. Protect the lenses from direct sunlight
Never leave the headset positioned so sunlight can enter the lenses. The lenses focus incoming light onto the display, which can cause permanent damage. Store the Quest 3S away from windows and other bright, direct light sources, even when you are only stepping away briefly.
For ordinary cleaning, use an appropriate dry or manufacturer-approved soft lens cloth. Avoid liquids and household cleaning products unless the current care instructions specifically permit them.
Make the room safe before you play
11. Clear the play area
Move furniture, pets, cables, drinks, sharp objects, and fragile items out of reach before launching an active game. Check above and below waist height: swinging a controller or turning quickly can hit a lamp, shelf, television, or ceiling fixture.
Full-color passthrough can help you find your way around, but it does not make collisions impossible. It is a camera view of the room, not normal unaided vision.
12. Create the boundary for the activity
When the headset asks you to define a play area, choose the setup that matches what you will actually do. Use a stationary setup when you will remain seated or in one place. Use a room-scale setup when the experience expects you to walk or move around.
Trace the usable area carefully and keep it away from hazards. Recheck or redraw the boundary whenever you use a different room, move furniture, or notice that the virtual edge no longer corresponds to the real one. A boundary is a visual aid, not a physical barrier.
13. Set the floor level correctly
Take time to set the floor height when prompted. A floor that is too high or too low can make virtual objects float, sink, or sit at an uncomfortable height, and it can make room-scale interactions misleading.
If menus or virtual objects appear consistently above or below where they should be, look for the current floor-level or room-setup option and redo it. Exact menu wording can vary with the Horizon OS version.
14. Learn the passthrough shortcut
Quest 3S includes full-color passthrough, which lets you view the physical environment through the headset’s cameras. Learn the current shortcut for switching between the virtual view and passthrough so you can orient yourself without immediately removing the headset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe shortcut, gesture, or system setting may differ after software updates, so look for the current passthrough control in the quick settings or headset tutorial. Even after learning it, keep the room clear.
15. Keep away from serious hazards
Do not use the Quest 3S near stairs, roads, balconies, bodies of water, fireplaces, glass doors, or other hazards. Avoid situations in which losing awareness of the real world could cause serious injury. Never assume the boundary or passthrough will warn you about every danger.

Keep cables and charging accessories outside the active area. If you are supervising someone else, watch the physical environment rather than relying only on what appears inside the headset.
16. Use a spotter for active or unfamiliar experiences
A spotter is especially useful for children, first-time users, fitness applications, and experiences that involve fast turning, jumping, swinging, or reaching. The spotter can keep pets and people out of the play space, identify hazards the wearer cannot see, and help the wearer remove the headset safely.

Learn the controllers and basic interaction
17. Pair and identify the left and right controllers
Confirm that both controllers are paired and that the left and right labels match the hands in the headset. Attach the wrist straps before playing, especially with active games. Keep the controllers inside the boundary when you set them down.
If one does not respond, check that its battery is seated correctly, press a button to wake it, and follow the current on-screen pairing or troubleshooting flow. Do not swing a controller while testing it, and do not assume a tracking issue is a hardware failure until you have checked the room lighting and obstructions.
18. Learn the Meta button and system controls
Practice opening the universal system interface, reaching quick settings, and returning to the home environment. Learn the current control for recentering your view when supported. These controls are more important than memorizing any particular game’s button layout.

Meta can change menu names and locations through Horizon OS updates. Look for the system, quick-settings, boundary, and recenter controls shown on your own headset rather than following an old menu path word for word.
19. Try hand tracking in good conditions
Quest 3S supports both hand tracking and controller input. Try hand tracking in a well-lit, uncluttered area with your hands visible to the headset. It is convenient for menus and supported applications, while controllers are generally the better choice for many games and precise interactions.
Tracking can vary with lighting, hand position, occlusion, and the application’s design. If hand tracking behaves inconsistently, improve the lighting, move your hands into view, or switch back to controllers.
20. Know how to switch between hands and controllers
Put the controllers somewhere safe when using hand tracking, but keep them close enough to retrieve without leaving the boundary. Learn how the headset detects the switch between hands and controllers and how to select the input method in the current settings if automatic switching is unreliable.
Not every application supports hand tracking equally. A game may display menus that accept hands but require controllers for gameplay, or may not support hand tracking at all.
21. Practice pinch, point, and grab gestures
Use the home environment as a low-pressure tutorial. Practice pointing at an item, pinching to select it, and using grab gestures where the interface supports them. Try moving your hands slowly before attempting quick gestures.
On-device processing supports hand and controller tracking, but that does not mean tracking will be perfect in every room or application. Occluded hands, poor lighting, and unusual gestures can still produce missed inputs. Learning this in the home environment makes the first game less confusing.
Set up mixed reality thoughtfully
Privacy note: Quest 3S uses cameras for passthrough and mixed-reality features. Review application permissions and remember that camera imagery is treated as device user data in Meta’s developer documentation. This does not establish that Meta records everything the cameras see, nor does it establish that no camera data is ever transmitted; review the permission and privacy information for the specific feature or application.

22. Scan or confirm the room only when needed
Some mixed-reality experiences need information about walls, floors, furniture, or the room layout. Follow the room-setup prompt when an application genuinely needs it, and correct obvious errors rather than accepting an inaccurate scan.
Meta describes Quest 3 and Quest 3S as supporting persistent room memory for up to 15 rooms. That is a platform capability, not a promise that every application will remember or use room information in the same way. You may still need to confirm the room or boundary after moving furniture or changing locations.
23. Review camera and microphone permissions
Check permissions before installing or launching an application that requests camera, microphone, or other sensitive access. Grant access when it is necessary for a feature you understand, and decline or uninstall applications that demand permissions unrelated to their purpose.
Meta’s developer documentation treats camera imagery as device user data and distinguishes the user-facing casting path from developer camera access. That distinction is useful: an application showing a mixed-reality effect is not automatically entitled to unrestricted camera access, so read the permission explanation and the application’s privacy information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

24. Remember that passthrough is camera imagery
Passthrough is not ordinary transparent glass. You are viewing a camera representation of the room, and it can differ from unaided vision—particularly in low light, during motion, or when you need to judge fine distances.
Do not use passthrough for precision tasks such as handling sharp tools, navigating stairs, driving, crossing a road, or judging the edge of a drop. Remove the headset when you need normal vision.
25. Begin with simple mixed-reality experiments
Start with a stationary virtual screen, a room-aware tutorial, or another simple mixed-reality experience. This teaches you how virtual objects relate to your floor and walls without immediately adding fast movement or physical exertion.
After that, try a more active mixed-reality game only if the room is clear, the boundary is accurate, and you feel comfortable switching to passthrough. Mixed reality is one of the Quest 3S’s important strengths, not merely a camera shortcut for finding your phone.
Check display, audio, casting, and storage
26. Check refresh rate if motion feels uncomfortable
Look for the display or refresh-rate setting if motion feels uncomfortable or a supported experience recommends a particular setting. Quest 3S supports 90 Hz and 120 Hz display refresh rates, but an application has its own rendering and performance behavior. Selecting 120 Hz in the headset does not force every application to render every frame at 120 Hz.
Comfort also depends on frame timing, movement design, tracking, fit, and the individual user. If an experience makes you nauseated, stop and switch to a stationary, low-motion activity rather than assuming a refresh-rate change will solve it.
27. Set the volume before starting
Adjust volume in the home environment before launching an intense experience. The built-in speakers support spatial audio, which can make games and entertainment more immersive, but you still need to remain aware of people, alarms, doorbells, and other real-world sounds when appropriate.
Use headphones only when the situation is safe and supervision does not depend on hearing the surrounding room. For children or active play, leave enough awareness of the physical environment to respond to a warning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches28. Try casting early
Set up casting before you need help. Casting lets another person see what the wearer sees, making it useful for teaching, troubleshooting, supervising a first session, and sharing a game or mixed-reality demo.
The current consumer casting path may involve the headset, the Meta Quest mobile app, or a supported receiving device. Look for the current Cast option in the headset’s quick controls and in the app. Meta developer documentation refers to Media Projection in connection with representing the user’s view and interface, but developer terminology is not a substitute for the current consumer steps.

Remember that casting can reveal the headset view, surroundings, microphone audio, or other interface information depending on the setup. Cast only to a device and audience you trust.
29. Organize storage early
Check the storage configuration of your particular Quest 3S and keep room available for operating-system updates and large applications. Qualcomm’s device information identifies 128 GB and 256 GB configurations, but regional offerings, bundles, and current package details should be confirmed for the unit you are buying.
Remove demos and applications you no longer use when storage becomes tight. You can usually reinstall owned applications through the account that purchased them, but check the current application and account behavior before deleting anything important. Do not fill the headset immediately with games you have not tried; a smaller, useful library is easier to manage.
30. Choose one comfortable first experience
Finish setup by choosing one experience that matches your goal:
- Learning the headset: choose a stationary tutorial or home-environment lesson.
- Gaming: begin with a low-motion game and stop at the first sign of discomfort.
- Entertainment: try a seated large-screen or multitasking experience at a moderate volume.
- Social use: learn the microphone, privacy, and mute controls before joining a busy space.
- Fitness: clear extra room, attach wrist straps, use a spotter if appropriate, and begin with a gentle session.
- Mixed reality: start with a stationary room-aware demo before attempting fast movement.
Meta’s launch positioning covers gaming, entertainment, multitasking, and personal-training use cases. There is no mandatory first application. The best first experience is the one that lets you learn the controls and comfort limits without rushing.
Optional accessories: buy only after the first week
You do not need a pile of accessories to complete Quest 3S setup. After using the headset, you can decide whether a compatible comfort strap, carrying case, lens protector, rechargeable AA batteries, or prescription inserts solves a problem you actually have.

A simple first-week routine
- Day one: charge, pair the app and account, connect Wi-Fi, update, fit the headset, set the floor and boundary, and learn passthrough.
- First session: use the home environment, practice controller and hand input, and keep the session short.
- Second session: cast to a trusted device and try a stationary experience with low motion.
- Next few sessions: test one mixed-reality application, one game or entertainment app, and—if desired—a gentle fitness experience.
- After a week: remove unused apps, revisit comfort and strap adjustments, check permissions, and buy accessories only if a specific problem remains.
If something feels wrong
- Blurry image: adjust the headset position, lens spacing, straps, and glasses spacer or inserts. Clean the lenses with a suitable soft cloth.
- Virtual floor is wrong: redo floor-level setup and confirm the boundary in the current room.
- Controllers do not track: check batteries and wake the controller, improve room lighting, remove obstructions, and follow the current pairing flow.
- Hand tracking is unreliable: use a well-lit area, keep hands visible, remove clutter, and switch to controllers for precise tasks.
- You feel sick or disoriented: stop immediately, remove the headset, take a break, and return only to a short, stationary session if you feel fully recovered.
- Casting fails: confirm that the headset and receiving device are on the appropriate network, then check the current app and headset casting instructions.
- Setup or downloads fail: verify charge and Wi-Fi, wait for a possible service or update delay, and use Meta’s current support instructions if restarting does not help.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first with a Meta Quest 3S?
Charge the headset, install and update the official Meta Quest mobile app, sign in to the correct Meta account, connect to reliable Wi-Fi, and finish available software updates. Then adjust the fit, floor level, and boundary before starting a game.
Does the Quest 3S use cameras for passthrough?
Yes. Quest 3S uses cameras for full-color passthrough and mixed-reality features. Passthrough is a camera view rather than transparent glass, so it can differ from normal vision and should not be used for precision tasks or treated as a replacement for physical safety.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchHow long should a first Quest 3S session be?
No. Start with short sessions and stop if you experience eye strain, headache, nausea, dizziness, or disorientation. A stationary, low-motion experience is a better starting point than an active game for many new users.
Are Quest 3S controllers better than hand tracking?
Controllers are preferable for many games and precise interactions, while hand tracking is convenient for menus and supported applications. Tracking quality and application support vary, so learn both input methods.
What accessories do I need for Quest 3S?
No. Optional accessories include a compatible comfort strap, carrying case, lens protector, rechargeable AA batteries, and prescription inserts. Check exact Quest 3S compatibility and decide after you know what problem you want to solve.
The Bottom Line
The best first Quest 3S setup is deliberately cautious: get the fit, floor, boundary, controllers, passthrough, permissions, and casting working before filling the headset with games. Then choose one low-motion experience, take breaks, and expand gradually. Passthrough and room understanding make mixed reality easier to use, but neither replaces a clear room, physical supervision, or ordinary awareness of danger.
