Sony Pictures has attached Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to direct a Metal Gear Solid film, giving the long-running adaptation a concrete new development milestone. The April 2026 reports confirm the directing duo, but do not announce a filming start, cast, completed screenplay or release date.
What changed with the Metal Gear Solid movie?
On April 9, 2026, Variety Australia reported that Sony Pictures is developing the film with Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein attached to direct. The Credits, published by the Motion Picture Association, reported the news the next day and included comments from the directors and Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch.

A director attachment is a meaningful sign that the project is active in development. It is not the same as a production greenlight or a confirmation that cameras are rolling.
Who are the directors?
Lipovsky and Stein are the filmmaking duo behind Final Destination Bloodlines. In comments reported by The Credits, they called Metal Gear Solid “nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games.” That is the directors’ description of the source game. Panitch praised them as “thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense.”

Does the Metal Gear Solid movie have a release date or cast?
The April announcement reports do not give a release date, name cast members, confirm a production start, or establish whether the screenplay is complete. There is not enough confirmed information to estimate a release year or say that casting is imminent.
The distinction matters because a director announcement tells readers who is attached to lead the film, not how close it is to production. Until Sony or an attributable production report confirms additional milestones, timing and other details remain unknown.

How does this update compare with earlier reports?
In July 2024, producer Ari Arad told GGRecon that the screenplay was still being worked on. That comment is useful historical context, but it does not establish the screenplay’s status in 2026.
A March 2026 DocumentaryTube article with a similar title claimed the script was complete and production was preparing to start. Those claims are not corroborated by the later Variety Australia and The Credits coverage, so they should not be treated as confirmed project status.

What can Metal Gear Solid fans explore while they wait?
The announced film adapts the Metal Gear Solid game franchise. Players interested in the source material can explore the existing games and collections; this is a recommendation to revisit the games, not a claim that movie tie-in products have been announced.
For future film updates, distinguish the milestone being reported—such as a director attachment, cast announcement, production start or release date—and check whether it comes from the studio or an attributable report. A forecast or unsourced claim is not equivalent to an announced date.
