Spoilers: The dates below reveal when major companions enter the story. “Join date” can mean a first appearance, an Archetype awakening, or the point when a character is fully controllable in battle; those milestones do not always happen on the same day. Builds are role-focused recommendations, not an official ranking.
When does every party member join in Metaphor: ReFantazio?
The protagonist is playable from the start. Companion dates below distinguish a story appearance from the later point at which a character’s Archetype awakens or they become fully usable. Eupha’s timing is flexible because it depends on when you complete the Dragon Temple.

| Character | Availability milestone | Build direction |
|---|---|---|
| Protagonist | Playable from the start; not a recruited companion. | Begin with flexible Seeker magic and support, then develop toward Prince for the endgame. |
| Strohl | First appears with the party on June 5; Warrior activation and full control are reported for June 6. | Warrior into Swordmaster, Samurai, or another advanced physical path. |
| Hulkenberg | First interacts with the group June 10; permanent party integration and Knight awakening are reported June 11. | Knight into Magic Knight, Paladin, and Royal Knight. |
| Heismay | July 4, during the Martira story section. | Thief into Assassin, Ninja, and Royal Thief. |
| Junah | August 13, when Masked Dancer awakens. | Masked Dancer into Persona Master. |
| Eupha | Flexible: joins after the Dragon Temple is completed, reported between August 19 and September 4. | Summoner into Devil Summoner, with inherited healing or revival as needed. |
| Basilio | Awakening is reported September 11; full control follows the next day. | Berserker and its advanced physical line. |
Dates and milestone distinctions are drawn from the 2026 build and recruitment guide and the recruitment timeline. The guide’s summary table labels Strohl June 5, while its detailed account puts his Warrior activation on June 6; the distinction above separates his first appearance from that activation. It likewise avoids treating Hulkenberg’s June 10 interaction as her full join, or Basilio’s awakening as the day full control begins.
What is the best build for each party member?
Build suggestions here focus on each character’s natural role and the Archetype paths identified in the build guides. ATLUS describes Archetypes as a way to customize party powers, so treat these as adaptable starting points: adjust inherited skills to enemy affinities, the rest of your lineup, and the abilities you have unlocked. ATLUS’s game overview also describes turn-based squad battles alongside real-time fast battles.

Protagonist: flexible magic and support
Start with Seeker, then work toward Magic Seeker and Soul Hacker as they become available. The protagonist can cover gaps in the party by inheriting Mage and Healer skills for elemental attacks, healing, and revival; Commander or General can add party support. Prince is the recommended endgame direction. Magic and Agility are useful story priorities, though a physical build remains viable. Keep inherited skills that fill current needs rather than carrying redundant low-tier spells.
Strohl: physical damage
Use Warrior as the foundation, progressing through Swordmaster and later physical options such as Samurai. Prioritize Strength and Slash or other strong single-target physical attacks. Brawler or Commander inheritance can round out his kit, while physical passives and Charge-style setup can help with bosses. Reserve expensive magic investment for a specific party coverage need rather than making him compete with the protagonist by default.
Hulkenberg: tank and protector
Follow Knight → Magic Knight → Paladin → Royal Knight. Knight’s Proclamation is an early signature tool for drawing attacks away from vulnerable allies. Focus on protection and defense, while inheriting enough Strike or Slash coverage to remain useful against enemies resistant to Pierce. Against bosses that use broad magic attacks, consider magic mitigation or a more flexible setup; single-target protection does not answer every threat.

Heismay: evasion, debuffs, and turn control
Develop through Thief, Assassin, and Ninja toward Royal Thief. Build around Agility and evasion, then use taunts, evasion buffs, attack and defense debuffs, item utility, and fast physical pressure to disrupt enemies. His value is not just raw damage: keeping him difficult to hit while he interferes with the opposition gives the party control of the fight.
Junah: support and elemental utility
Take Masked Dancer toward Persona Master. Use her flexibility for elemental coverage, buffs, debuffs, and weakness setup. Inherit support abilities such as buff removal or healing when other party members do not cover those needs. She pairs well with a physical attacker who can capitalize on the turns she spends setting up an opening.
Eupha: magic damage and recovery options
Develop the Summoner line toward Devil Summoner or the strongest available late-game upgrade. Eupha’s main job is direct magic damage and elemental coverage; Mage or Healer inheritance can add supplemental spells, healing, revival, or MP support. Powerful summons can consume MP, so balance burst damage against the demands of longer dungeons.

Basilio: physical burst
Build through Berserker toward its advanced physical options. Prioritize Strength and high-power physical attacks, then use inherited damage boosts, defensive passives, accuracy support, or team buffs and debuffs to make boss damage more reliable. Junah can help create setup opportunities, while Hulkenberg supplies a sturdier defensive core.

How should you choose a party?
There is no universally best lineup. Choose around the enemy’s weaknesses and the defensive demands of the encounter, while making sure your group can deal physical damage, cover magic and elements, protect allies, and disrupt opponents. Turn economy matters too: support and debuffs can make a damaging turn more valuable, but they need to fit the fight.
- Broad campaign foundation: The guide’s general suggestion is to keep the protagonist, Strohl, Hulkenberg, and Heismay as a versatile core.
- Rotate for coverage: Bring Junah, Eupha, or Basilio as they become available when their support, magic, or physical burst better answers the encounter.
- Review inherited skills: Favor abilities that cover current gaps or exploit the enemy’s weaknesses; avoid keeping redundant low-tier options just because they were useful earlier.
