If Windows reports that Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions.dll is missing, do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The file is supplied by the matching .NET shared framework or by a NuGet dependency, so the reliable repair is to identify the application’s target framework, install the correct .NET runtime, restore and align its Microsoft.Extensions packages, then rebuild or republish it. On Windows 11 and Windows 10, also check whether the process is using the wrong x86 or x64 installation and whether deployment copied only part of the output.

What is Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions.dll?

Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions.dll contains the abstraction APIs for .NET’s dependency-injection system. Applications and libraries use interfaces such as IServiceCollection to register services and build an IServiceProvider; the application host supplies the concrete container. Microsoft describes IServiceProvider as part of .NET’s built-in service container.

The assembly belongs to the Microsoft.Extensions package family. Depending on the target framework, it is delivered through a Microsoft.Extensions NuGet package, through a .NET shared framework, or through the files in a self-contained publish. NuGet identifies Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions as a Microsoft-owned package and reports 13.5 billion total downloads as of 2026. A familiar exception may request a specific assembly identity, such as Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions, Version=7.0.0.0.

Why does Windows say the DLL is missing?

A missing-file message can represent more than a deleted file. The process may have no compatible runtime, a restore may have omitted the assembly, or the assembly that is present may not satisfy the version requested by the application.

  • Required runtime absent: The target machine lacks the .NET Runtime, Desktop Runtime, or ASP.NET Core Runtime required by the application.
  • Incomplete restore or publish: A PackageReference restore, build, or deployment copied only part of the dependency graph.
  • Incompatible Microsoft.Extensions versions: Direct and transitive packages resolved to different major versions. NuGet uses a flat graph, lowest applicable version rules, and direct-dependency-wins behavior, so a direct downgrade can leave another dependency unable to load.
  • Wrong process architecture or executable: The application or build may be using x86 while the intended installation is x64, or the reverse. PATH order can cause Windows to select a different dotnet.exe.
  • Older .NET Framework packaging: A packages.config project can have a damaged package directory, an incomplete reinstall, or a missing binding redirect in app.config or web.config.
  • Target-framework mismatch: The output was built for a different target, or a deployment copied a DLL from another application instead of producing a coherent publish.

Microsoft’s compatibility guidance requires an equal-or-higher compatible assembly version and no binary-breaking API changes. If those conditions are not met, the first visible error can be a FileLoadException, MissingMethodException, or TypeLoadException rather than a simple file-not-found message.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture the complete exception first. The requested version and the first failing stack frame determine whether you need a runtime installation, package repair, a binding redirect, or a republish.

  1. Copy the entire exception, including the assembly name, requested version, public key token, inner exception, calling application, and first failing stack frame.
  2. Record the target framework from the project file or application documentation: for example, net8.0, net9.0, net10.0, net11.0, .NET Framework, or another target.
  3. Identify the application type. Note whether it is a console program, WPF or WinForms desktop app, ASP.NET Core app, Windows service, test process, plug-in, or automatic-instrumentation scenario.
  4. Write down where it fails: during build, at application startup, only after publishing, or only on another computer.
  5. Keep a copy of the project file and lock or assets files before editing package references. That makes it possible to undo an attempted version change.

How do I check whether the correct .NET runtime is installed?

Check the runtime before changing project files. The .NET SDK creates and builds applications; the runtime executes them. Installing only the SDK on an end-user PC does not supply the runtime required by a deployed application.

Choose the runtime that matches the application

Application or task Component to verify Why it matters
Command-line application .NET Runtime at the target major version Executes the application and supplies the shared framework it expects.
WPF or WinForms desktop application .NET Desktop Runtime at the target major version Includes the desktop components in addition to the base runtime.
ASP.NET Core application ASP.NET Core Runtime at the target major version Provides the web runtime required by the host.
Development or build machine .NET SDK matching the project’s target Restores packages and builds; it is not a substitute for the runtime on a user’s PC.

Install the matching Windows runtime from Microsoft’s official .NET download channel. Match the major target in the project or exception; installing an unrelated major release is not a dependable substitute. For a framework-dependent deployment, the target computer must provide that shared runtime. A self-contained deployment should carry the runtime and dependencies in its publish directory.

Run the built-in checks

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:

dotnet --list-runtimes
dotnet --info
where.exe dotnet

dotnet --list-runtimes shows the installed shared frameworks. dotnet --info reports the active SDK, runtimes, architecture, and installation details. where.exe dotnet reveals which executable Windows finds first.

Correct an x86/x64 PATH conflict

If both 64-bit and 32-bit .NET installations exist, compare the architecture required by the application with the executable selected by where.exe dotnet. Microsoft documents a Windows installation problem in which PATH order selects the unintended installation. When an x64 process or build is required, ensure C:Program Filesdotnet precedes C:Program Files (x86)dotnet in the relevant PATH, then open a new terminal and repeat the commands. Do not delete an installation until you know which applications depend on it.

How do I restore and align Microsoft.Extensions packages in an SDK-style project?

For a project using PackageReference, restore the complete graph, inspect transitive dependencies, remove stale output, and rebuild. Perform these commands from the project or solution directory:

dotnet restore
dotnet list package --include-transitive
dotnet nuget locals all --clear
dotnet clean
dotnet build

Inspect every Microsoft.Extensions dependency

Review the output of dotnet list package --include-transitive and the project file. Look for all Microsoft.Extensions.* entries, not only the package named in the exception. Align their major versions with one another and with the target framework. A direct reference can override a transitive dependency, so adding an arbitrary latest version merely to make the filename appear can create a different load failure.

Add a direct PackageReference only when the project genuinely uses that API and select a version compatible with the target. If one library requires an older compatible release while another requires a newer API, update or rebuild the dependent library rather than forcing a downgrade. After changing references, delete the project’s bin and obj directories, restore again, and rebuild so stale assemblies are not reused.

Use the requested assembly version as a clue

An exception that requests version 7.0.0.0 identifies the assembly identity compiled into the calling component; it does not prove that copying a file with the same name will satisfy the request. Compare that identity with the versions selected in the restored graph and with the target framework’s reference assemblies. If the project was upgraded, recompile the component that still requests the old identity instead of hiding the mismatch with an unrelated DLL.

How do I repair a .NET Framework project that uses packages.config?

Older .NET Framework projects may keep NuGet packages in a physical package directory rather than resolving everything through an SDK-style project file. Close Visual Studio, restore or reinstall the affected package, and verify that the package directory actually contains Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions.dll before rebuilding.

  1. Close Visual Studio and any process that may have locked the package files.
  2. Restore the solution’s packages or reinstall the Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions package using the project’s established NuGet workflow.
  3. Check the restored package directory and the project references for a broken path or a reference to a version that is no longer present.
  4. Open app.config or web.config and inspect binding redirects when the exception names a strong-named assembly. A redirect must cover the versions your application and dependencies actually use; do not copy a redirect from an unrelated application.
  5. Rebuild after clearing stale output. If the package folder is on a very long path, move or restore the solution to a shorter path and try again; path length and old/new package conflicts are known considerations in this package family.

How do I fix a missing DLL after publishing or deploying?

Determine whether the application is framework-dependent or self-contained, then publish again after runtime and package alignment are correct.

Framework-dependent deployment

A framework-dependent application intentionally leaves the .NET runtime out of its output. The destination Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer must have the matching runtime and shared framework installed. Installing the SDK alone does not meet that requirement. Verify the target machine with dotnet --list-runtimes, install the correct runtime for the app type, and launch the published output again.

Self-contained deployment

A self-contained publish should carry the runtime and its dependencies in the publish directory. Republish after restoring packages and correcting the target framework, then inspect the resulting folder for the assembly rather than copying a DLL from another application. If the new publish still omits the file, review the project’s target and package graph; the omission is a build or dependency-resolution problem, not a reason to assemble a hand-picked collection of DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed or partial deployment

Do not copy only the executable or only one library from a developer machine. The output may contain a coordinated set of assemblies selected for a particular target framework and architecture. Replace the deployed directory with a complete fresh publish from the corrected build, and ensure the process starts the executable from that directory.

What changes for a .NET 11 application?

Microsoft’s .NET 11 compatibility guidance says several Microsoft.Extensions libraries, including Microsoft.Extensions.DependencyInjection.Abstractions, are included in the shared framework. For a project targeting net11.0, remove an explicit package reference when the project no longer needs it, then rebuild against the .NET 11 reference assemblies. Do not make that change blindly in a multi-targeted project: earlier target frameworks may still require a package reference, so keep the conditional reference where appropriate and recompile every target.

If a .NET 11 project still reports the assembly as missing, verify that the .NET 11 runtime or SDK used for the relevant operation is actually installed and selected. Then inspect the restored graph for an older direct Microsoft.Extensions reference that is pulling the project away from the shared framework’s intended set.

When do I need a binding redirect?

Binding redirects apply to older .NET Framework applications that load strong-named assemblies. They are not a general repair for SDK-style .NET applications or a replacement for installing the correct runtime. Use one only after confirming the package versions that the application and its dependencies can use together.

The public key token and version in the exception describe the assembly identity the loader is trying to resolve. A redirect can map an older request to a compatible newer assembly, but it cannot add APIs that the newer binary does not contain or repair a binary-breaking change. If the error changes to MissingMethodException or TypeLoadException after a redirect, undo the redirect and align or rebuild the packages instead.

Which fix should I try first?

Use the target framework, application type, requested version, deployment mode, process architecture, and package-management format to choose the repair. The same filename can require completely different work in a .NET Framework desktop app and a self-contained modern .NET service.

What you find Most likely repair Verification
Required shared framework is absent Install the matching .NET, Desktop, or ASP.NET Core Runtime. The appropriate entry appears in dotnet --list-runtimes.
Wrong executable or architecture is selected Correct PATH order or launch the intended x86/x64 process. where.exe dotnet and dotnet --info show the expected installation.
SDK-style restore omits or downgrades a Microsoft.Extensions package Align direct and transitive versions, clear NuGet caches and build output, restore, and rebuild. dotnet list package --include-transitive shows a coherent set.
.NET Framework package directory is damaged Restore or reinstall the package and repair the project reference. The package directory contains the DLL and the reference points to it.
Strong-named .NET Framework assembly has a compatible version conflict Review a narrowly scoped binding redirect after package alignment. The application loads without changing into a missing-method or type-load error.
Published output is incomplete Republish from a clean, corrected build; choose framework-dependent or self-contained deliberately. The complete publish directory contains the expected dependencies and runs on the target PC.
net11.0 project has an unnecessary explicit Microsoft.Extensions reference Remove it where the .NET 11 shared framework supplies the library; retain conditional references for older targets. All target frameworks compile against their intended reference assemblies.

What should I avoid when fixing this error?

  • Do not download the DLL from an unofficial DLL site. A matching filename does not establish the required assembly identity, API surface, architecture, or trustworthiness.
  • Do not rename another version. Renaming a different Microsoft.Extensions assembly cannot satisfy the loader’s metadata and may create a harder-to-diagnose crash.
  • Do not copy a DLL from another application or computer. Its target framework and dependency graph may differ from yours.
  • Do not add a random latest package. Direct-dependency-wins resolution can downgrade or otherwise alter a transitive dependency that another component needs.
  • Do not confuse the SDK with the runtime. The SDK is a build tool; a deployed application needs the runtime appropriate to its application type and target.
  • Do not stop after replacing one file. Rebuild or republish the complete output so all related dependencies are selected together.

What is the final verification checklist?

Work through this order after making a change:

  1. Reproduce the original launch or build action and save the new complete exception if it changes.
  2. Confirm the target framework and application type still match the installed runtime.
  3. Run dotnet --list-runtimes, dotnet --info, and where.exe dotnet from the same account and launch context that fails.
  4. For SDK-style projects, inspect direct and transitive Microsoft.Extensions packages, clear NuGet caches, remove bin and obj, restore, and build.
  5. For .NET Framework projects, verify the package directory, project reference, and any required binding redirect.
  6. For deployed applications, replace the destination folder with a complete fresh publish and confirm whether it is framework-dependent or self-contained.
  7. On .NET 11, check whether the shared framework should replace an explicit Microsoft.Extensions package reference, while preserving references needed by older target frameworks.

These checks address the actual causes of this error: missing shared frameworks, inconsistent package graphs, wrong architecture selection, damaged legacy package folders, and incomplete deployment. They also preserve assembly compatibility instead of masking the problem with an unrelated copy of the DLL.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues and other common Windows problems, while also offering cleanup and crash diagnostics. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a free trial by category of at least two days, followed by a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

FAQ

Why does the exception show Version=7.0.0.0 when a newer .NET version is installed?

The version in the message is part of the identity compiled into the component that failed, not a statement about the newest runtime on the computer. A newer assembly can still be unusable if it removed or changed an API that the caller expects. Compare the caller’s package reference and target framework with the restored dependency graph, then rebuild the caller against a compatible set.

Why does the program work in Visual Studio but fail after I copy it to another PC?

The development computer may have a shared framework, SDK, package cache, or architecture-specific installation that the other PC lacks. A copied executable also does not guarantee that the rest of the publish output was copied. Recreate a complete publish for the intended deployment mode and verify the destination with the runtime commands instead of copying individual files.

Can a different launch context select a different .NET installation?

Yes. A service, test runner, plug-in host, or game launcher can use a different PATH and process architecture from the terminal where you tested dotnet. Run the runtime and PATH checks from the failing context or inspect the host configuration, then make the intended installation available to that process.

What does the public key token in the error tell me?

It identifies the strong-named publisher identity that the loader expects, together with the assembly name and version. It helps distinguish a genuine binding problem from a file with the same filename. In .NET Framework applications, use that identity when evaluating a binding redirect; in modern .NET projects, use it alongside the package graph and target framework when deciding what to rebuild.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did the error change to MissingMethodException after I added a DLL?

That change usually means the loader found a file but the binary does not expose the API the caller was compiled to use. Remove the copied file, restore the project’s declared dependencies, align Microsoft.Extensions versions, and rebuild the dependent component. A different exception is evidence of an API compatibility problem, not proof that the original repair succeeded.
