Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Launch Gets Stranded on the Runway (Updated)

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s November 2024 launch was disrupted by overloaded online services, exposing the risks of its cloud-dependent design.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on November 19, 2024, but many players could not reach a usable flight. Overloaded online services caused queues, stalled loading, missing aircraft and activities, installation failures, crashes, and greyed-out controls. This was not simply a case of demanding PC hardware: Microsoft designed the simulator around streamed data and constant connectivity, making server capacity part of the launch experience.

The original outage was later mitigated. By November 27–28, Microsoft said it had increased capacity and restored access and streaming reliability, although stability and third-party add-on problems remained. As of August 18, 2026, the launch failure is a historical incident rather than a statement of the simulator’s current service status.

What happened when Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched?

The game became available at 8 a.m. Pacific Time on November 19, 2024, for Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, and Game Pass. Players and reviewers quickly discovered that getting into the simulator could be harder than flying in it.

Tom’s Hardware reported that its Steam installation initially appeared to be about 11.6 GiB, but the simulator then downloaded more data during startup. Users encountered a prolonged Loading language… screen, queues, blank Activities menus, greyed-out flight controls, and failed attempts to begin a flight. Some installations reportedly stopped at about 70 percent. Other reports described crashes and “low bandwidth” errors, including one case involving a connection reported at 500 Mbps.

  • CHALLENGE LEAGUE: Compete against other pilots in the iconic Reno and Red Bull Air Races

Those symptoms did not all prove the same failure. They represented several layers of the launch problem:

  • Access and authentication: queues prevented some players from reaching the main menu.
  • Content loading: aircraft, activities, and other data failed to appear or took an unusually long time.
  • Installation: some users saw progress stall during the initial setup.
  • Game entry: flight buttons could remain unavailable even after menus appeared.
  • Stability: some players experienced crashes, including crashes to the Xbox dashboard.

Microsoft acknowledged the service disruption in its launch-day update. The company said an overloaded service responsible for handling data requests for systems including Career mode and missions was causing delays, errors, long loading times, and missing content. Microsoft said it was gradually bringing players into the service as conditions improved.

Why the problem looked like a broken PC or installation

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 was not built as a conventional, entirely local game. Microsoft’s FAQ described a thinner client that downloads textures, meshes, map data, and other content as needed. Microsoft’s accessibility documentation also states that constant internet connectivity is required and that the simulator does not support offline operation.

That architecture has advantages. It can reduce the amount of world data that must be stored locally, support a more detailed streamed world, and reduce the need to install every update or asset in advance. But it also changes what a service outage looks like.

In a conventional game, an overloaded backend may prevent multiplayer or account features from working while leaving a local campaign playable. In MSFS 2024, authentication, remote data requests, and streamed content are part of the route to the main menu and the runway. A service bottleneck can therefore appear as:

  • a frozen loading screen;
  • a failed or incomplete installation;
  • missing aircraft or activities;
  • a greyed-out “go” control;
  • a misleading bandwidth warning; or
  • a flight that never finishes loading.

A fast home connection does not eliminate that risk. The reported 500 Mbps case did not establish a bandwidth requirement; it illustrated that a client-side “low bandwidth” message could appear when the underlying problem was elsewhere. Likewise, meeting Microsoft’s hardware requirements could not solve an outage that occurred before the simulator successfully loaded its online content.

What players and reviewers actually saw

The most detailed launch-day account came from Tom’s Hardware’s staff testing and reporting. It described very long initial loading, additional downloads after the small-looking Steam installation, greyed-out controls, blank Activities screens, an installation stopping around 70 percent, Xbox dashboard crashes, bandwidth errors, and queues that prevented access to the main menu.

Those reports should not be treated as proof that every player experienced every symptom. Microsoft separately confirmed long loading times, missing aircraft, delays, and errors caused by overloaded data-request services. The distinction matters: online complaints can show the breadth of a problem, but individual reports are not automatically independent verification of the same technical cause.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launch timeline

Date What happened
November 19, 2024 The game launched. Players reported queues, long loading, incomplete menus, installation stalls, crashes, and failed flight launches. Microsoft began investigating long initial loading times and service outages.
November 20, 2024 Microsoft said the overloaded service had been addressed and that players were being brought in at a steady pace. That was mitigation, not proof that every launch problem had disappeared.
November 22, 2024 Microsoft later said it deployed a first hotfix.
November 27–28, 2024 Microsoft said access and streaming issues were resolved, capacity had been increased, and reliability was above 99.999 percent. It also temporarily disabled non-aircraft third-party Marketplace content after identifying add-ons that could cause crashes, long loading times, or failure to enter the simulator.

Microsoft’s later account is available in its November 27 update and November 28 development update. “Resolved” should be read narrowly: the major access and streaming crisis was addressed, while stability, compatibility, and ordinary performance work continued.

Why the lack of advance review access mattered

Xbox Game Studios reportedly did not provide reviewers with early codes. Its stated rationale was that the online services and Day One update made launch-day distribution preferable and would avoid an artificially shortened review window.

That decision did not cause the outage. It did, however, make the launch harder to evaluate. Reviewers could not complete normal testing before publication, and launch-day coverage had to contend with the same queues and service failures affecting customers. Hardware testing was especially compromised: reliable frame-rate, CPU-scaling, graphics-setting, and stability measurements require first reaching a working flight.

The result was less useful information for buyers at exactly the moment when they needed it. A review-code policy can be defensible in some online games, but it also transfers more of the testing burden to launch day—and makes a capacity failure much more disruptive to public coverage.

Microsoft’s published PC requirements

Microsoft listed the following specifications for the original PC release. They are published requirements, not independent guarantees of a particular frame rate, resolution, or loading experience.

Tier CPU GPU VRAM RAM Storage
Minimum Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 970 4 GB 16 GB 50 GB
Recommended Ryzen 7 2700X or Core i7-10700K Radeon RX 5700 XT or GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB 32 GB 50 GB
Ideal Ryzen 9 7900X or Core i7-14700K Radeon RX 7900 XT or GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB 64 GB 50 GB

The requirements listed Windows 10 with the latest updates and DirectX 12. The 50 GB storage figure did not mean that the entire world was permanently stored on the drive. The reported Steam download was also an observation from Tom’s Hardware, not a universal installation size. On-demand streaming reduced the local footprint but increased dependence on Microsoft’s account, content, and data services.

What to do if similar symptoms occur now

The following is a diagnostic order, not a claim that the November 2024 outage is still occurring:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check service status first. Look at Microsoft Flight Simulator and Xbox service-status channels before changing local files or network settings.
  2. Confirm account access. Make sure the Xbox or Microsoft account is signed in and functioning.
  3. Avoid needless restarts during a known outage. Repeatedly closing and reopening the simulator may simply return you to the same queue.
  4. Remove third-party content temporarily on PC. Move Community Folder packages elsewhere and test a clean launch.
  5. Update the software stack. Install current Windows updates, graphics drivers, Xbox components, and game updates.
  6. Test without add-ons before blaming hardware or bandwidth. Microsoft has identified outdated or incompatible third-party content as a possible cause of crashes and abnormal behavior.
  7. Use official support if the problem remains. After services recover and a clean launch still fails, use Microsoft’s official support and Zendesk channels.

There is no verified universal command-line fix, registry edit, or network setting that should be treated as a guaranteed cure for these symptoms. Microsoft’s current product page specifically warns that outdated PC Community Folder packages can affect performance and behavior.

Should you buy or try it?

For someone deciding during the original launch window, waiting was the sensible choice unless they already had Game Pass and were comfortable with instability. The 2024 launch demonstrated that even a powerful PC, a fast connection, and a valid installation could not guarantee immediate access.

For readers considering the simulator in 2026, the launch outage should be treated as historical. Check the current service status, system requirements, and add-on compatibility rather than assuming that November 2024 conditions still apply. Microsoft’s current product page, dated here to August 18, 2026, lists availability on PC, Xbox, PS5 and PS5 Pro, Steam, Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. PS5 availability was not part of the original November 2024 launch lineup.

Game Pass can be a lower-commitment way to test current access, performance, and interest, but it is subscription access rather than permanent ownership and depends on catalog availability. Microsoft Store purchases support PC/Xbox flexibility in supported configurations, while Steam is PC-only; consult Microsoft’s platform guide before buying.

Flight sticks, yokes, throttles, and rudder pedals can improve control precision, but they cannot fix server failures, streamed-data errors, or incompatible add-ons. Microsoft also warns that many PC flight peripherals are not compatible with Xbox Series X|S unless specifically supported by the manufacturer.

The bigger lesson from the launch

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 exposed the trade-off in cloud-heavy game design. Streaming can reduce local storage demands and support a richer, continuously updated world. It can also turn a backend capacity problem into a game that appears to be incorrectly installed, underpowered, or broken on the customer’s machine.

The launch was therefore more specific than a generic “bad launch.” Microsoft acknowledged an overloaded data-request service, and the symptoms matched the simulator’s dependence on remote content. Later capacity increases addressed the central access crisis, but add-on compatibility and stability were separate problems. The architecture delivered ambitious streamed systems—and made the runway unusually dependent on the servers.
